EOTech Comparison - What are the differences?

I was recently in the market for a new EOTech red dot site and I had a hard time finding an EOTech Comparison Chart to highlight the differences between all of the models. After a ton of research I came to find out that the differences boil down to a few things which I will chart out for you below. The first part of the EOTech Comparison basically boils down to different reticles i.e. a single 1 MOA dot to three 1 MOA dots ( more below). The second comparison is the type of battery that it takes. The third is the where the controls are located and the 4th is night vision compatibility.

All EOTech holographic Weapons Sites (HWS) come with the same legendary durability, precision and proven military/ law enforcement track record. I have to say, once I navigated the mildly confusing world of EOTech models, I am extremely happy with my purchase ( EOTech XPS 2). Hopefully this EOTech Comparison will help you find the right model for your rifle and you will be as satisfied as I am with the overall product.

XPS vs. EXPS

These two site options are very similar, the main difference is the side mounted buttons.

The Eotech EXPS and XPS are the latest generation Eotech holographic sites. These sites all feature a laterally mounted CR123 battery with various reticle options. The new mount of the battery creates a tighter more compact package that takes up less rail space. This can be a big win for riles with limited mounting room or if you are planning to put other items on the same rail like a back up site or a magnifier. The big difference between the EXPS and the XPS is that the EXPS has side mounted buttons which can be more convenient if you are planning to put a magnifier in front of your Eotech holographic weapons site. Both models have a site that is night vision compatible (XPS3, EXPS3)

EOTech XPS Review

The EOTech XPS is the direct result of user feedback and a natural advancement to the EOTech holographic Weapon Site ( HWS) line. Critics of previous EOTech models sited a problem with the battery compartment as it was in line with the recoil of the weapon and would cause issues with the connectivity of the battery after hard use. EOTech answered that problem with the XPS series and produced a battery compartment that is perpendicular to the weapon recoil thus eliminating the battery issue and dramatically reducing the size of the site. I personally own the EOTech XPS2-2 and love it, it sites in extremely easily. I essentially lined the red dot up to my iron sites and then tweaked it minimally from there. The single dot with the 65 MOA circle make target acquisition very quick and it is no problem to shoot with both eyes open, I actually prefer it. I have heard some folks say that the reticle is blurry, however when you look through the site you have to focus on your target and not the dot. That is the key to a crisp site picture. It sounds like a no brainer but you would be surprised by some of the things that people say on the web!

EOTech EXPS Review

The EOTech EXPS series is very similar to the XPS series with one major difference. Button placement. As mentioned above the EXPS models have placement of the buttons on the left side of the HWS instead of the rearward facing buttons of the XPS. Having the buttons on the side provides one advantage.. If you are planning to mount a magnifier in front of your EXPS site the side buttons will make it easier to adjust the brightness of the site and to turn it on or off. I own the XPS2-0 and plan on adding a magnifier, I don't see a huge drawback with the buttons given mine are rear facing but will update this when I make the 3X magnifier purchase and let you guys know.

Additional Eotech Models - Basic overview of non- XPS/EXPS sites

The original models of the EOTech sites are slightly larger due to the orientation of the battery and the type of batteries that are used. These models range from using AA Batteries, to a forward mounted CR123 battery. Again the main differences are the battery type, the placement of the controls and the option for night vision compatibility.

These EOTech sites are the ones that you will most often see on military weapons and law enforcement rifles. There are some options to look at on these sites. The availability of AA batteries may be something that you want to consider, however it must be calculated against the extra weight and rail space that they take up.

Eotech Reticles-

What is an MOA and how does it apply

If you have been researching EOTech HWS you will see the reticle described as being 1 MOA dot with a 65 MOA Circle. The "MOA" is is used to describe the amount of viewing space that the reticle will cover on your target at 100 yards. Since 1 MOA or minute of angle equals roughly 1 inch of distance at 100 yards, a 1 MOA dot will cover roughly a 1 inch diameter spot on your target at 100 yards. At 25 yards it will cover a 1/4 of an inch on the target. The 65 MOA circle will cover a 65 inch diameter circle at 100 yards and a 16.5 inch circle at 25 yards which is excellent for quick target acquisition for CQB.

A small 1 MOA dot is great for both CQB and distance. There are some red dot sites on the market that have up to a 6 MOA dot which is good for close range but not as effective at distances past 100 yards. Think about it, if you were making a shot at 300 yards with a 6 MOA dot your dot would cover 18 inches of your intended target. It is hard to be accurate long distances with a dot that large.
