Fishing Near Mountain Home Idaho

Updated on August 11, 2014

Fishing at Little Camas Reservoir-Fishing Paradise

LIttle Camas Reservoir has been a frequented location for our family to fish for over 50 years. It is close enough to go fishing for a few hours or most of a day and still make it home in time for dinner. All of our children have grown up knowing a lot of fun family times there.

Camas Reservoir is only about 23 miles east on ID 20, then 2 miles north on Forest Road 160. It has an elevation of about 5,000 and is open to many camping spots around the reservoir. It has several restrooms at the boat ramp as well as along the road going into the reservoir. It is well stocked by the Idaho Fish and Game. Fishing at Little Camas is open from May through October. Because the water levels drop later in the summer and the risk for fish to die, the catch limit is lifted from August 20th through November 30th. Anyone can call the Public Lands Information Center for current prices on in-state and out-of-state licenses. There are no reservations to make or fees to be paid to use the campground.

Camas provides a Boat Ramp, Primitive Campgrounds, Restrooms, Wildlife Viewing, Motorized and Unmotorized Boating, float-tube fishing, Picknicking, and of course Great Fishing.

This is an example of what you can catch in the waters of Idaho

Tom has been fishing the waters of Idaho all of his life. He can tell you where the fishing is really good..when..what rod..what bait..at what times of the day or year. For $5.00 additional on the in-state license fee, you can fish with 2 rods. Tom really likes to catch and release. Sometimes the fish will swallow so hard that you have to keep them due to the damage it does to them to take the hook out. Then there are other times when we take them home for the barbecue...like this beauty !

Packing for a trip to Little Camas - Bring it all with you-Take it all out when you go!

Pack well..nothing is provided at Little Camas

It can be quite an ordeal to pack for a family of five children. The following is a list that my husband made up for the supplies we take..especially if going for the day with other people. A person could go up with just the barest necessities but it's more fun for us to make a day of it. All food, water toiletries, shade, and fishing gear must be taken into the fishing spots. This list is not in any specific order of importance..that would be up to you.

  1. Toilet Paper...Out houses are provided..sometimes the paper there is used up..or missing
  2. Worms, mini marshmallows, salmon eggs, power bait..different colors
  3. Firewood..matches, pocket knife, sharp knife to clean fish
  4. Bread, mayo, mustard, spam, vienna sausage, hot dogs and buns, cheese, deli meats etc.

Home fried chicken if you've a mind to do so..we have also had homemade potato salad..I make a good one !

  5. Fruit, candy, nuts, cold drinks, water to drink, Hershey bars, graham crackers and

marshmallows for the kids to roast (adult kids too)

  6. Ice and coolers for food, water, drinks and a separate cooler for the fish

Plastic bags for garbage and at least one for the fish

  7. Spinning rods and reels for each person with a fishing license..license on the person if the Fish & Game should show up to check.

Digger chain links to hold the fishing rods..see photo above.

  8. Egg sinkers, treble hooks, swivels, B.B.Sinkers, exrta fishing line, fingernail clippers to cut fishing line

Old hemo-stats or LONG tweezers for taking hooks out of fish

  9. Lawn chairs, hats, sunblock, layers of clothing if it is cold...peel layers off as it warms up

Extra clothes if someone falls into the water

  10. A terrific attitude for FUN no matter what!

I caught the biggest fish! Hooray! All is not lost LOL!We went out in our small boat. Tom said that he has had this boat since he was just out of high school. The lake was beautiful!Tom did catch the most fish that day. That was okay b/c he hadn't caught any at all for awhile.Tom's first catch and subsequent reel-ins were "Bite-Size", but he did haul in the most :)Tom was giving me the yah-ah-ah over catching the first fish LOL! Some of that was b/c he had been “snake-bit” the last few times out :)The dock was actually pretty busy that day. These are what we ended up with for our "take-out" that day. We try to throw back as much as we can. The dark one in the line-up is a bass.Kathleen adding a new lure her the line.A lot of "networking" was dine by me that day.My first catch for the day!

Although I'm not much of a fisherman, the scenery is amazing at Little Camas, and certainly worth the visit just the views. Thanks for sharing them.

Little Camas looks like such a beautiful place to fish. I used to go on fishing holidays quite a lot, something I am now thinking of starting up again after seeing this. I like your list of things to bring, it's always good to take some home comforts.

This is a fabulous lens. It made me want to jump in an airplane and come to visit immediately. I loved your photos of the area, the fishing and your family. *Squid Angel Blessed* and added to "My Squid Angel Blessings for 2012" in the "Sports & Recreation » Sports » Fishing" neighborhood. In fact, yours is the 1st lens to be featured in this category this year! Whoohoo! I also added it to the "Travel & Places » Vacation Ideas" neighborhood. You never know who might be looking for a great fishing vacation spot. LOL.
