Niners and Giants oh my!

   The New Year brought us a very happy Sunday in our house.
   My husband's 49ers made it.
   My Giants made it.
   We're bicoastal in our football allegiances, but both feeling very happy today!
   
   Wishing every a very happy Rose Bowl today and a satisfying Super Bowl 46 next month!!

   I can see the Giants making a nice playoff run this year. They're favorites to beat the Falcons next week, and after that they'd play the Packers. That will be a tough game, but the Packers defense is vulnerable. They played close against the Packers a month ago, and even though the game will be in Green Bay the Packers haven't played a meaningful game at home against a team that finished over .500 since their week 1 win over the Saints. The Packers starters will be well-rested for that game, but some of them might also be rusty.
   
   I think the toughest challenge on the road to the Super Bowl would be a NFC championship game against the Saints. If the Giants played them in that game it would be played in New Orleans, and the Saints have been dominant at home this season. Not only were they 8-0, but the closest any opponent came to beating them was a 7 point win over the Texans in week 3.

         Im with DB on this.  The 49ers are one of only two teams in the playoffs that were outgained on a per-play basis . Plus their lack of offensive execution does not bode well. All you 49ner fans may argue that defense wins championships lets all remember that a great offense should beat the defense...the reason is because the defense is all based on reaction...there will always be holes and places to exploit on D...all the offense has to do is execute. And the niners dont do that well. The 49ers are also one of only two playoff teams that finished with more field goals than offensive touchdowns. Stats have them at 44 field goals and 32 touchdowns. Bengals are the other teams with 31 touchdowns and 33 field goals.
         
         Offense wins championships and the Saints sure are an offensive giant, specially with Breez as hot and precise as he is.
         
         DB didnt make any assumption any more than you did when you picked SF to beat the Saints.  New Orleans should get past the Lions (hmmmmm maybe not) this weekend. And then like DB said the toughest challenge on the road to the Super Bowl would be a NFC championship game against the Saints.
         
         Im rooting for the Giants and let them get past Atlanta this weekend. Cruz, Osi, Tuck and Eli elite are awfully in synch these days. All holds are barred when NY comes to play in championships

            This has been the year when offense triumphed over defense. The two worst defensive teams in the NFL based on yards allowed, the Packers and the Patriots, each hold the #1 seed in their respective conference. The Lions, Saints, and Giants all had defenses ranked 23rd or worse, and all are going to the postseason.
            
            Weird things can happen in the playoffs, but the Lions go into New Orleans this weekend with a worse record, and they're facing a Saints team that already beat them by 2 touchdowns and has not lost at home all season.
            
            The 49ers get the bye instead of the Saints based on a 1 game advantage in conference record. If the NFL did a coaches poll to determine rank, I firmly believe the Saints would have the #2 seed. Even with the advantage of playing at home, I don't like the way the 49ers match up against the Saints. Their touted run defense won't mean much against a team that accumulates passing yards at historic levels.
            
            The Giants faltered in the second half but got things together in the final weeks, and this team is looking eerily similar to their XLII championship team. They weren't dominant in that regular season either. Even though I'm predicting New Orleans beats the Lions and then the 49ers to get to the NFC championship game, I think the Giants would rather play the 49ers in San Fran than go into New Orleans, where they've already lost once this season by 25 points.

               As a Giants fan I sure do hope that it is the 49ners and not the Saints that the big blue machine will have to come up against.
               
               But then again . . . . this is the NFL (add the post season) and in this game on any given Sunday  anything can happen. Proof of that pudding is exactly as you stated  .. this Giants team is looking a whole lot like the XLII Super Bowl champions (minus Strahan but he did leave Osi and Tuck with alot of his spirit)
               
               Sad about my Jets but thanking my Giants for giving me something to look forward to this weekend!

                  I would actually take Jason Pierre-Paul right now over Michael Strahan from 4 years ago as the more talented player, although Strahan was more of a leader by that point, while Pierre-Paul is still learning the game.

            Remember in 07 when the Giants won the SuperBowl they beat every team that beat them in the regular season? Packers are once again on that list, which makes me think it's Big Blue's time once again to bring home the Lombardi trophy!! Go Giants!

   giants and falcons will be a good game. I think the falcons will pull it out 37-33. The teams are pretty even all around. saints will role through the lions and the niners, however the niner game will be very physical!

         I can see why the Falcons are underdogs in this game despite having home-field advantage. They've only beat one playoff team this season, and it was way back in October. They did lose a very close game to the Saints in Atlanta, and that was probably their most impressive game of the season.
         
         The Giants are coming off back-to-back must-win games against teams that were still fighting for playoff spots. They're more battle-ready right now than the Falcons. Unless Justin Tuck manages to motivate the Falcons offensive line by running his mouth, Matt Ryan might get sacked 8 times in this game.

            Edit: the Falcons do not have home-field advantage. I always forget the NFL doesn't do seeding based solely on record, which seems idiotic to me. The Falcons and Giants are pretty close to the same record, but it's insane that the 12-4 Pittsburgh Steelers have to travel to Denver to play the 8-8 Broncos.

   Giants can go all the way. The last time I saw them play the Packers, that was a close game. Only the Who Dat with Mr Brees is dangerous!!

      Believe it or not, the Pack is the matchup I wanted the Giants to have.  I just hope San Fran eliminates the Saints next week as we can go toe to toe with the Niners too GO BIG BLUE WRECKING CREW!!!

               but oh the Packers.. .. Mind over Matter as they say and I think if the G-Men keep up their mental toughness they are a lock to go all the way.
               
               I was happy to see Mario Manning (1 TD) Hakeem Nicks (2 TDs) , Jacobs (92yds)  and Ahmad Bradshaw (63yds) get some touches but I have to admit I want to see Victor Cruz do a few more salsa dances!!!

                  It's believing they can and not getting psyched out by anything or anyone.

               While Aaron Rodgers was successful in their Week 13 win over the G-Men, I think that this is hardly the same Giants team. And the Giants are putting it all together at the right time.
               
               Eli comes from good stock. Playing for Peyton, sure. Archie and Olivia as well. But when he suits up on Sunday he will be Eli Elite! Lets all remember you cant spell Elite without Eli!
