GPS System Operation

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system network of 24 satellites placed into orbit.

GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. One of the nice features of this system is that it works in any weather conditions, and anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. On top of that, it's free.

The satellites circle the earth twice a day in a very precise orbit and send signal information to earth. The receivers take this information and use triangulation to calculate the user's exact location when it has at least three satellites to calculate from for basic information.

With four or more satellites in view, the receiver can determine the user's 3D position (latitude, longitude and altitude).

The satellites that make up the gps system are orbiting the earth about 12,000 miles up above us and travel at approximately 7000 miles per hour. The power to operate their system electronics comes from solar power, and battery backup.
