Kerrville Concealed Carry

Updated on August 17, 2014

Kerrville Concealed Carry | Texas CHL | TX Concealed Carry

A few months ago, I decided to get a Texas Concealed Handgun License.

The first step in the process is to take a class with a State of Texas Certified CHL instructor.

So I started looking for instructors in and around Kerrville, TX

After contacting and talking to a few of them, I decided to work with Mr. Erick Spornhauer.

Here is why I chose Erick

While talking to Erick over the phone the very first time, I felt how sincere he was. No sales pitch, no hype, just an offer to help me get a CHL

The class has to be no less than 10 hours. Most instructors offer a day-long class and are not willing to work around your personal schedule. However, a 10-hour class in one day did not fit my schedule.

Erick was very flexible and offered me a two-day class 5 hours each day.

How can Kerrville CHL instructor Erick Spornhauer help you?

Erick teaches his class at his ranch located 15 miles west of Kerrville on I-10 & HWY 479

He creates very friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

There are usually no more than 2-3 students in a class, so everyone gets his attention and gets his/her questions answered.

He is an old school Texas shooter and a former army weapons specialist. His knowledge of all the world guns is incredible! He has tons and tons of stories to tell about all kinds of weapons and real-life situations with them.

And that makes the class so much fun!

There is time during the class when you have to shoot at the range.

And a well-equipped shooting range is just around 100 yards from the class room.

I did not have a gun at that time so Erick let me borrow one of his guns to use during the class.

He takes students safety very seriously at the range. I felt relaxed, safe, and secure at the firing line under his control.

Even though I took a class months ago, I can call Erick and talk to him if I have questions about the Concealed Handgun License or weapons and shooting in general. He is always willing to help.

Since I took my class, I have met many people who took his class. All of them were completely satisfied with his training.

I also wanted to sharpen my shooting skills after I took a class

In addition to CHL classes, Erick offers all levels of firearms training. From the new shooter, who never held a gun before to State and National champions. He is an NRA certified firearm instructor.

After I took his CHL class, I took a few his classes on shooting a handgun.

If I wanted, Erick would work only with me.

Or he can train a couple of students at the same time. And that is more fun!

I’ve seen a few new shooters who have never had a gun in their hands before. They were shooting right on target the very first time after Erick taught them.

Mr. Spornhauer is no longer teaching. Therefore, the range is defunct.

I found Erick on this site. The previous comments were helpful. If your considering CHL training I highly recommend him. He made me comfortable and I found him to be a very good instructor. The course was presented in a professional manner and I enjoyed my time with him. I'm now looking forward to additional training with Erick.

I contacted Erick initially based upon the reviews from others who had taken his class, but after completing the class, I came to the quick conclusion that there will be no other CHL instructor in my future except Erick Spornhauer. Why? For starters, he's very entertaining and interesting and makes the class speed by quickly --- too quickly because I really didn't want it to end! He enjoys sharing wonderful stories from his past in law enforcement and often uses imaginary scenarios, as well as real ones from his own experiences, to make learning Texas Law come alive and so much easier to retain. He's truly a "colorful character" (which is a compliment, Erick), and the fact that his classes are limited to no more than four students at a time, allows for plenty of opportunities to ask questions because the atmosphere is relaxed and unhurried and the environment for learning affords the best experience for being properly trained with your handgun, retaining correct safety measures, understanding the state laws governing handgun ownership, and for becoming imminently prepared as a responsible citizen capable of making those split-second decisions in a dangerous situation when one only has a two-second (or less) window to react. I loved Erick's property and home, where he teaches his classes, because he's a proverbial wellspring of information on living off the land and becoming self-sufficient and less dependent on the commercial and corporate world for survival. Another great reason to take your CHL class with Erick is that he invites his students back regularly to practice shooting in order to keep their skills at optimum levels, and just for the opportunity to get together with other like-minded people for a few hours of fun and fellowship on the practice range. I truly enjoyed my experience taking Erick's class and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to get their CHL for the first time or for those needing to repeat the requirements for CHL renewal. Thank you, Erick, for a most pleasurable time and I look forward to remaining in contact with you and will enthusiastically refer anyone to you I come across who's seeking to get their own CHL. Great job!!!

I got my CHL license through Erick in December 2012 and it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life! Erick's policy of not taking more than four students at a time in his classes allows for a more relaxed atmosphere and better learning experience. I was the only student in my own class, which made the one-on-one time with Erick such a pleasure and allowed for sufficient time to ask questions. He had lots of wonderful stories to share with me about his own law enforcement career prior to this retirement, and as a teacher of Texas Law, he definitely knew his stuff! I so enjoyed my class with Erick and I highly recommend him to others, whether you're renewing your license or taking the class for the very first time. Erick is patient and takes all the time needed to ensure his students leave his class well informed, properly trained with their handguns, and well prepared for any potentially dangerous situation. Thanks so much, Erick!

I stumbled across this website and decided to call Mr. Spornhauer. He was very friendly and was willing to accommodate our needs so that we could take his class. We took the class with another couple and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Being a past law enforcement officer, Mr. Spornhauer knows his laws and can convey sometimes confusing legal jargon in a manner that is easy to understand. What we thought might turn into the equivalent of a driver's license class before meeting Mr. Spornhauer instead became a very engrossing learning exercise on responsible gun usage and ownership - we really did not know that the time would seemingly fly by like it did. And like some others have said, the experience was further enhanced by his wife's wonderful hospitality. We heartily recommend his CHL training class for those new to firearms as well as others with more experience.
