Kimi knows what he's doing: Clothing for the F1 fan
Kimi Raikkonen clothing for the Formula One fan
In his penultimate year racing for the Lotus Formula One team, Kimi Raikkonen made all the TV viewers and fans laugh when he was given instructions from his engineer during the Grand Prix at Abu Dhabi.
Pit to car communications during races are usually short and to the point and when his engineer instructed him, Kimi's response was equally blunt 'just leave me alone. I know what I'm doing'.
About twenty laps later the brave crew member gave Kimi further instructions. This time the response was 'yes, yes, yes, I'm doing all of that. You don't have to remind me every few seconds'.
As fans know, we'd never heard a driver talk to his team in that way. And he did know what he was doing - he won the race.
What made this even more amusing was the fact that for many people, these were the longest sentences they'd heard him say - he is well-known for monosyllabic remarks. (When asked how it feels to win a race, he'll say "it's OK' - with a twinkle in his eye. I love that twinkle).
Raikkonen is one of the most popular drivers, both with fans and other F1 professionals, and has a devilish sense of humor. The story goes that on the following day, he arrived at the Lotus team headquarters with t-shirts for all the staff bearing his quote.
Without doubt, those original t-shirts will become valuable collector's items in the future.
But clothing manufacturers soon realized that there was a market for such an item and similar t-shirts were soon produced.
It's my belief that these too will be important F1 memorabilia in years to come.
Kimi is known in F1 circles to be somewhat of a party animal, he enjoys a drink (shall we say) and is known for dressing as a gorilla - need I say more?
The t-shirt you see above isn't the only one available and there are other clothing items too. Because Kimi is universally liked and admired, they make a great gift for any Formula One fan, whichever team or driver they support.
A variation on the theme. This t-shirt is available in nine colours and eight sizes. There is also a shaped ladies version available, plus a nice warm on with long sleeves.
One for the ladies.I love the simplicity of this t-shirt and it says it all, doesn't it?
Kimi is cool.
See - and hear - Kimi in action.
The video that I put here originally has been removed from You Tube -probably due to some copyright restrictions.
But you can still hear it on this one. It's at about 1.30.
Note: If you're watching from the beginning, profanity alert.
Abu Dhabi 2013
The following year, Kimi didn't have such a good race - he had to retire on the first lap. Sebastian Vettel was the victor. At the previous race, when Vettel had clinched the World Championship he had celebrated by doing donuts after the finish line. This is frowned upon in Formula One and he had been fined by its governing body.
When he won at Abu Dhabi, he repeated the misdemeanor. Over the pit-to-car radio, his team warned him, remembering the fine. In a perfect imitation of Kimi, Vettel replied 'leave me alone - I know what I'm doing'.
Buying gifts for the Formula One fan
If you have a racing fan on your gift list, it can be tricky. Buy that person something connected with the wrong team - or the wrong driver - and your gift simply won't be appreciated.
For example, I'm a die hard Ferrari fan so anything to do with that illustrious team is the perfect gift for me. But others wouldn't necessarily agree.
It's so complicated. Buying for a Red Bull fan? Well, anything to do with Daniel Ricciardo and Red Bull is fine for me but absolutely not Sebastian Vettel. See what I mean? Loyalties are fierce.
That's why products which feature Kimi are good for anyone.
In all the time he's been racing, I've never come across anyone who doesn't like Kimi.
