Let Your Gymnast Tumble Safely with a Gymnastics Mat

Updated on February 27, 2019

Tawnya is a freelance writer and mom of a tiny gymnast. When it comes to buying gymnastics-related gear, I'm an industry pro.

Tumbling Mats are Great for Home

My daughter is an only child and at that awkward age where she isn't interested in toys. When Christmas started sneaking up on us, I was stumped as to what I could buy her for Christmas. She loves clothes and her iPod, but I wanted to get her something that would impress her and something she would truly appreciate. Thankfully, I have come up with the perfect plan.

My Gymnast Loves to the House

Like most gymnasts, my daughter loves to practice her moves just about anywhere. Since she has just learned how to do tumbling passes, she has turned my house into her very own gym. However, I have hardwood floors, and she is making me crazy tumbling in my living room, her play room, and just about anywhere else she pleases. To make her safer in the house while encouraging her to practice at the same time, her dad and I are going to gift her with a tumbling mat for Christmas. We are also buying her a balance beam on riser legs so I wanted to make sure the mat would fit under her beam.

What I Love about this Gymnastic Mat

We chose this gymnastics mat after browsing several of them because it folds up and is easy to store. In fact, since the mat is incredibly light, my daughter will be able to fold the tumbling mat up herself and carry the mat by the handles. Although I haven't seen her fold up this gymnastics mat before, I have seen her fold and handle similar mats at the gym, so I know she will be able to handle it. The mat also has Velcro at the ends, which will allow us to add more mats in the future.

I can't wait to see my daughter open this gymnastics mat on Christmas. She will be so pumped to use it, which will encourage her to practice, and will help to keep her safer.

My Daughter's Reaction to her Tumbling Mat

On Christmas day, my daughter opened her tumbling mat, and she was as excited as I had hoped she would be. It's only eight days after Christmas, and she has already spent countless hours on the mat perfecting her craft. One of my favorite parts about the mat is that she can fold it up and put it away all by herself. This means I don't have to stop what I'm doing every time she wants to play. If you are looking for a great indoor activity for your kids to enjoy, check out this awesome tumbling mat.

Other Great Uses for a Tumbling Mat

We've now had the tumbling mat for nearly three years. My daughter still uses it on a daily basis. It folds up and fits in the coat closet when she isn't using it. In addition to my daughter's tumbling, the mat has come in handy for mom and dad too. My husband uses it to do his physical therapy stretches. I use it for yoga, and my daughter uses it as an extra bed during slumber parties too. If my house was bigger, I'd have a dozen of these. It was one of the best investments we've ever made. As a bonus, even with a ton of use, the mat is still in great shape.

@lesliesinclair: Thank you so much, Papier. While I don't deny she is lucky, I think I'm the lucky one because I get to be her mama.

I have 2 of these and they are so worth the money! Long lasting, we've had ours since 2002. Been great for tumbling and now we use them while stretching and exercising. Also multi use like sleep overs and even camping. Best investment for our family.
