The Vince Lombardi Trophy and How I Got to Touch Tiffany

NFL Trophies

The Lombardi Trophy

Some may be curious about the history and trivia about the championship football trophy that is awarded to the NFL's best team every year. Though not not handed out until Super Bowl V, it was named after Vince Lombardi, the legendary Green Bay Packers coach who won the first two Super Bowls.

What Jeweler Makes

The Super Bowl Trophy

So now we know insiders in the NFL world call the NFL Super Bowl Trophy Tiffany. Its obvious that they all want to dance with her and and that nickname they gave this bowl trophy is easily explained, as it stems from the fact that the luxury 5th Avenue Jeweler Tiffany and Co. is responsible for the creation the most famous silver football trophy.

What is the Cost to Make Super Bowl Trophies

t's made of sterling silver and is created by Tiffany & Company.

$25,000, 22 inch, 7 pound, beauty, every coach and every player of the NFL over the 24-week season of pre-season games, regulation games, playoffs and the Super Bowl 46 strive to win her hand.

The Day I Touched Tiffany

I may be a female but I have a passion for Football that is equal to or even greater than most men. Recently I was lucky enough to meet up with Tiffany, thanks to the magic of Facebook, a former boy interest from my long ago college days invited me to a NBC sports event shoot. I spent one of the best days with my old friend. Little did I know my old friend had turned into one of the NFL's most indispensable broadcasting talents, in my eyes a football god. Lucky me, I was treated to a day watching the pros shoot the intro for the NBC Super Bowl 46 version with Faith Hill as she struts her stuff singing 'Waiting All Day for Sunday Night'. It was a day full of excitement and pure joy. Though the making of this 2 minute intro can be monotonous there wasnt one minute that I was bored.

A Football God

Seeing my old friend was special in and of itself. My friend has become one of best producers in the game of football. I like to call him my football god. Producing Super Bowl XLVI and every week of Sunday night Football on NBC sports qualifies him as such. Forget that he knows more about the game than anyone I have ever met, it is his passion that shines through every minute you are in his presence. And so on the day I met up with him, I was treated to many things and one of the highlights was that I was in the presence of the Vince Lombardi Trophy. And let me tell you, seeing Tiffany was just as amazing as one could imagine. Bottom line it was as good as being being touched by an old friend, A feeling that was warming and sparked delicious memories.

Tiffany the Trophy

During a scene shoot, I caught a glimpse of her, Tiffany. I thought the trophy must be a Hollywood prop of magic. So when a stagehand told me me that I was looking at the real deal, my body tingled with delight. A shiver ran down my spine, as my reflection beamed from her elegant curves.
And then she invited me to touch her. She felt good beneath my hand. Diamonds? Gold? Tiffany sterling silver remains my first choice in jewelry. What would you expect from a hard core NFL football fan like me?

Facts about the Trophy

  •  Tiffany & Co. has made the trophy each year since the first Super Bowl in 1967.
  • Since 1970 the prize has been called the Vince Lombardi Trophy in honor of the Green Bay Packers coach.
  • There was a lunchtime meeting between Tiffany vice president Oscar Riedener and NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle in New York City and together they sketched the design on a cocktail napkin.
  • Fourteen plates of sterling silver are cut and molded in separate components, then forged together to form the iconic trophy.
  • Depicting a regulation-size NFL football in kicking position the trophy Tiffany takes approximately four months and 72 man-hours to create.

Final Thoughts on Tiffany

Yes,I was one of a privileged few who had touched Tiffany, Forget your diamond rings or your fancy jewelry this is the only item from Tiffany's that would do for a girl like me.

      Hey wavegirl,

Oh yeah we got a great Sunday night game this week -- Patriots @ Ravens. I'll be rooting for the Patriots for maybe the only time this season and you'll be rooting for the Ravens.

I wonder how much Tiffany is worth. You day in the hub $25, ooo, but when you consider all the publicity and such, it must be millions.

I have a lot of Steeler stuff for my man cave. Super Bowl memorabilia and the like. Just imagine how awful it must be to never have danced with Tiffany. I'm thinking here of an analogy related to being a virgin for life.

BLACKANDGOLDJACK - Not sure how I missed you stopping by 29 hours ago for I have been waiting lol! And yes The tiffany I touched did belong to Big Blue . . at the time of the taping we didnt even know the Giants were going to the dance so the engraving wasnt there but I can tell you there were plenty of finger tip marks. .. who wouldnt want to touch her!

As for Al and Kurt, sure they get fed info and stats in their ear from the 'truck" but I do believe most of what they say come from their spin on the game. And I agree with you SNF is the best of the best when it comes to the NFL. Must be why they took home every Sports Emmy they were nominated for! Then again I tease as they dont have much competition when it comes to the game.

Have you seen ESPN or the NFL networks game openings? Charlie Daniels and Celo dont even come close to Faith Hill. And yes she is as hot as you think, very shy and awfully pretty. . . and noone could see it better . .

All right Sunday Night where are you?

Just kicking back from the things that you do

You want the Big Game, we want it too!

And who has had Tiffany the most? She may be sterling silver, but it's all about the black and gold, baby.

Who did the Tiffany you touched belong to? The Giants last one? The winning SB team always gets to keep it, right? And Tiffany makes a new Tiffany every year don't they? I know you have to give Lord Stanley's Cup back.

Kudos to your producer buddy. NBC Sunday Night Football is by far the best. Michaels and Collinsworth are by far the best. Does your buddy write Collinsworth's lines? He made a crack that cracked me up on the Steelers @ Broncos telecast about the Steelers having the ball so long Troy Polamalu's hair had time to dry.

Oh yeah, Faith Hill. Is she as hot as I think she is or is it more about the makeup and hairdresser?

I loved this hub...sterling is also my favorite. I like gold-- what woman doesn't -- but there is something about exquisite sterling that catches and keeps my fancy. I’m a Bostonian, so my heart is with the Pats on Sunday. :-)

Paul - you know I have often asked some of my friends from around the world (and it always amazes me) both sports fans and non sports fans IF they all know about the Super Bowl. Most do and they seem to think we are crazy Americans when they see the loyalty football fans have to their teams. Im not so sure that they know that the winning team takes home the Lombardi trophy though! Up until this day I didnt even know she had the nickname Tiffany . .ah you live and learn as they say. IMHO probably the Nobel Peace Prize is most recognized around the world!

Sorry my Giants took your 49ners place in the SB46 but your guys came a long way this year and with Harbaugh coaching I wont be surprised to see them in Super Bowl 47!

That is pretty cool. There is so much history behind that iconic trophy. I'm not sure if there is a better known trophy in the US. Do you think more people recognize it or the Heisman Trophy? Non football fans probably think of the Oscar or Nobel Peace Prize as the best known trophy in the US.

Ive got my fingers crossed right now that the Giants win the super bowl Shari so its kind of hard to type punctuation and quote marks.

What a thrill that must have been to actually touch old Tiffany. Good for you.
