Maria de Villota: RIP
This article was originally written because of a wonderful t-shirt that was available with a quote from Maria De Villota. The t-shirt that was featured on this page is no longer for sale. However, I still think that this was a wonderful message to us all from a tremendous woman. I'm so sorry that this t-shirt is no longer available but I am keeping this page available simply as a tribute. Let's hope it becomes available again soon.
My new life goes beyond my dreams
Maria de Villota died on 11 October 2013. To say that she was my heroine would be an understatement. As I write, it's not yet known how she died. She was found in her hotel room and the current reports say that her death was due to natural causes. She was 33.
Please read the quote that was on the t-shirt
Fifteen months before she died, Maria was involved in an accident that nearly took her life. She was a Formula One test driver and suffered severe head injuries while testing an F1 car. She also lost an eye in the accident.
First interview after the accident
The words you see in the quote below were part of her first interview after recovery. See the video below. She wasn't lamenting the loss of vision that meant she could no longer pursue a career in motorsport. On the contrary, she said that despite it,she saw things more clearly now - she saw that she was lucky to be alive and that was determined to live it to the full.
She had so little time
Just a few months before her death, she was married. She had written a book which was due to be released just three days later. She was working in auto sport (particularly to encourage safety and women in the sport) and had recently been cleared to drive again.
What caused the tragedy?
As yet, we don't know. It may have been the result of her head injury or a heart attack is also being speculated. There's one thing I believe though.
Just as Maria wanted to live her life to the full, I am sure that she would encourage us to do so.
Judging by the quotes from her post-accident interviews, I believe that Maria's book will be an inspiration to us all.
Update: The book is now available in Spanish only. I don't know whether it will be printed and published in English too. All I can tell you is that when and if it does become available, I'll add the details on this page.
I will be the first to buy a copy.
You can buy the Spanish version by using the link below.
Please - let us have an English version
I am convinced that it will just be a matter of time before this book is translated into English and republished. If you are lucky enough to be able to read Spanish, here's the book. And please, report back.
Upbeat and thankful to be alive
