Must-have pontoon boat accessories
Pontoon boat accessories for the discriminating boater
Pontoon boats are floating parties so there are a myriad of must have pontoon boat accessories to enhance that party atmosphere.
I don't personally have a pontoon boat as I live in Maryland and we don't have many good lakes in which to partake of pontoon boat activities - the Chesapeake Bay is has too many waves as does, obviously, the Atlantic Ocean. But, we do have a sailboat (MacGregor 26S) which keeps us happy and out on the water. We have a lot of the items I've chosen to showcase in this little article so I know of what I type!
But, when we eventually retire to the southern US, a pontoon boat will be on our list of must haves. And, trust me, it will be tricked out with the best pontoon boat accessories.
Think Safety FIRST!
Before we get to the other great gifts for a pontoon boat owner, let's get the safety stuff out of the way.
This is one of the best outdoor first aid kits on the market - we have one on our jet ski and on the sailboat. We even have invested in the same kit for our new RV. You never know when the great outdoors is going to bite you!
The Picnic Time Manhattan Portable Travel Bar
So, what's a pontoon boat without a traveling bar to store a few of the favorite libations of captain and crew?
We have this Picnic Time Manhattan 2-Bottle Portable Travel Bar and we love it. We take it about everywhere we go, unless, of course, we're flying somewhere - then, it stays home as it's no fun to carry on a portable travel bar with no liquor in it (against TSA regulations).
So, this bar has accompanied us on many boat rides and still looks as good as new. We stock it with a Scotch for John and a Vodka for me. It seems like we're always making friends on the water when they see our portable bar.

In this article, there are about a thousand (ok, I exaggerated) gifts for a new boat owner. Most of these gifts will work well on pontoon boats also so give it a click and check it out:
Handy gifts for a new boat owner
John, my very significant other, just bought another boat so I've been made aware (by him....) of handy gifts for a new boat owner and, since Valentine's Day...
Pontoon boat grills and grill mounts
Grills and grill mounts for Pontoon boats
What's a pontoon boat without a grill? How the heck are you going to have a summer party without hotdogs and hamburgers (and all the fixings?). These grills and grill mounts are made specifically for the thicker rails that most pontoon boats have. Make sure you get the right size grill - bigger is always better!
This is the grill we have on our sailboat but it will work on a pontoon boat also as long as you have the mount shown below
Check the pontoon rail size but I'll bet this grill mount will work
A very nice gas grill
This grill mount is made specifically for pontoon boats. You can use any grill although you might have to drill holes to attach.
Save Your Cell Phone and iPad With Waterproof Cases
I never ever set foot on the boat without having my phone and my electronics protected in these wonderful waterproof bags. I've lost enough money by having something hit the drink before.
Now, stuff still ends up in the water but, with these floating bags, a quick swipe of the fish net and I'm back in business. These waterproof pouches also protect your electronics against sand, dust, or any element you can think of.
You can see all types of waterproof cases on my own website at:
Pontoon boat covers
Investing in a good pontoon boat cover is a must
It's not so much a must-have pontoon boat accessory as a necessity as you don't want to spend you time on the lake cleaning the boat before you head out.
These pontoon boat covers work well for any pontoon boat, whether it's moored or being trailered. They make storing the boat and wrapping it up for the winter so much less painful.
Pontoon boat fenders
Pontoon boat fenders will keep the sides of the boat from getting all scratched up
Although pontoon boats are floating parties, they have to be docked at some point, and that's where the fenders come in handy. Pontoon boat fenders (or 'boat bumpers' to most of us landlubbers) are adjustable so that they can be set at any height, depending on the tide or dock height.
We have these mermaid boat fenders on Namaste, our MacGregor sailboat. They always attract attention whenever we dock. They're way fun! Your pontoon owner friend will love them.
Don't forget to protect the corners of the pontoon boat
These corner fenders will protect all of the corners of the pontoon boat from coming into contact with hard objects, like decks or other pontoon boats when you raft up. Taylor made is a particularly good brand (they make that cute mermaid boat fender above).
Keep keys safe with floating keychains
I don't care how careful the Captain of the pontoon boat may be, I can guarantee you that the boat keys are going to hit the drink at some point!
Luckily for my boat captain, I've purchased the Chums floating keyring there to the right. You do have to be mindful though of how many keys you have on the keychain - if there's more than 2 or 3, you should double up and buy two key floats.
Fishing knife kits
Fishing fillet knives make an excellent Father's Day present
There's nothing like throwing in a line and catching lunch! Having the right tools to do so means that you'll want a decent fish fillet knife.
And, don't scrimp here - you really get what you pay for (spoken by someone who has bought and thrown out cheap fishing knife sets in the past). Next on my wish list is one of the electric fish fillet knife.
Learn how to fillet a fish
I really don't like to clean fish but, if I want to eat, I do it. And, even more than I hate to clean fish is getting a fish bone in my lunch - ugh. So, I naturally watched this youtube video about how to fillet fish - it's very well done.
Pontoon boat drink holders
Cup holders are a must have pontoon boat accessory
Especially since you'll be hosting lots of thirsty friends on your pontoon boat in the summer, you'll need a lot of these cup holders around the boat.
I'd suggest putting one of the sturdier cup holders next to the Captain of the boat (you'll want to keep him or her hydrated) and use the other cup holders (like the ones with suction cups) around other parts of the boat as needed.
Keep food and drinks cold with a portable refrigerator
I wouldn't have thought that the portable boat refrigerators would work very well so I was way surprised to find ice floating on top of my beer the first time we used ours.
These portable refrigerators run off 110 or 12 volt (a cigarette lighter) power so you can use them when you have shore power or when you're on the water. They're also great for use when tailgating or camping - anywhere you have a cigarette lighter receptacle handy.
