The Best Swim Vests and Floaties for Kids

Updated on September 28, 2014

The Best Swim Vests and Floaties for Kids

Summer is finally here in the Northern Hemisphere! It's not too early to start thinking about summer fun in the water. When the days get uncomfortably hot and muggy, a nice relaxing swim has always been one of my favorite ways to cool off. After having four kids, it became a lot less relaxing and a lot more worrisome. My two oldest kids can swim, and they enjoy the water as much as I do; but I have a six year old daughter who is very cautious and timid around the water, and let's face it, if she isn't having fun then neither am I. My youngest daughter is four, and while she can't swim without floaties yet, she isn't as timid as my six year old.

This is where my favorite swim vests and floaties come in. They allow us all to enjoy the pool, while giving my kids more confidence and freedom in the water.

I am not saying all other floaties and vests are bad....I am just sharing my favorite from my experience.

Don't forget to sign the guestbook at the bottom of this page and share your comments with me. I welcome your thoughts and ideas.

(Intro photo and all photos on this lens were taken by me).

The Best Floaties for Toddlers: - Why I LOVE these floaties!

The best thing about these floaties, or as some people say, water wings, is that they are fabric covered. They don't stick to my daughter's arms when removing them. They are also easy to slide on and have velcro to adjust the tightness, which makes them great for skinny arms.

This is our second year using them and they are still going strong. They seem to be very durable.

My four year old daughter loves them, and so do I. They are the best arm floaties we have used so far.

Don't Forget the Guys! - They also come in a style just for boys.

They come in blue as well, and just in time to get ready for pool season!

Stearns Girls Swim and Float Swimsuit - My other favorite swim accessory for my daughter!

This sleeveless style is the suit my daughter has (hers is pink with purple butterflies on it). I have tried several brands of swim vests, but this one is by far the best out of all the brands I tried. My daughter is able to stay upright without her face tipping forward into the water. She can even jump off the side of the pool and this vest will bring her straight up out of the water. It is also easy for her to swim around the pool with this swimsuit on.

STRNS GLS SWM&FLT NO-SLV 30-50
STRNS GLS SWM&FLT NO-SLV 30-50

This product has been extremely durable as well. This is the third year my daughter has used this swimsuit. We bought it a little big and it fits perfectly this year. (I have found that this swimsuit is ok to be a little big, but make sure it can't slip off. Also make sure it isn't so big as to be very uncomfortable). If it is way too big, the shoulder straps will be pushed up next to the ears or face, which can be annoying.

These suits combine the swim vest and arm floaties together in one piece.

If you don't want the whole suit, check out these styles! - Both boys and girls styles featured below.

Fun designs when you don't want the whole suit!

Important!

Please remember that none of these swim aids can take the place of constant adult supervision!

Floaties...A Help or Hindrance?

Sound off here...tell me what your favorite ways are to help a child learn to swim. Do you think floaties are important? Do they help or hinder? From my experience, my daughters were very cautious around the water. The floaties helped them let go of me and practice their swim strokes and kicks on their own.

In your opinion, do you think floaties hinder or help a child learn to swim? What are some of your favorite ways to help a child develop confidence around water?

The Best Quick Set Pool! - Of course, you need a pool to use these floaties...

In my opinion, the Intex Easy Set Swimming Pool is one of the quickest, easiest pools to set up and use. The only catch I have found is that your location has to be very level! This is very important with one of these pools. We have had much enjoyment out of ours! As you can see, the kids were swimming before it was completely full!

      Can't wait to swim!

      Impatient swimmers!
      Impatient swimmers!

As you can see, the kids just couldn't wait to jump in! The pool was almost full....but not quite!

Don't Forget to Put on Sunscreen!

Sunscreen is an important thing to remember to keep skin healthy and protected from the sun's damaging rays. My kids like the Banana Boat brand. We use the lip balm too, so that our lips are protected as well. I have featured our favorites below.

      Our Favorite Sunscreen!

We used the Banana Boat Baby Tear Free when our kids were small, but now that they are old enough, we like the Banana Boat kids. Our teenagers like the sport spray. It is so convenient and it is very easy to apply. It goes on much faster than the traditional lotions and creams.

Have you used these vests or floaties before, or do you have your own favorite? - Share your comments here!

The Puddle Jumper jacket style works best for my granddaughter; but with the plastic snap buckle on the back it is not allowed in our local pool because any fasteners will scratch and strip the finish on the (concrete rock) water slide. Is anyone aware of this style with a Velcro fastener instead?

I have children of my own and grand children too. My youngest son was so scared of swimming and being in the water so I had to be the best floaty for him. He sat on me like a monkey baby for a long time. Finally I hade the triumph to see him jump into the water with joy and no fear!

@anonymous: I agree, the fabric ones are still going strong for us this year. I am so glad we found them. They beat the plastic ones hands down!

We have the fabric water wings for my son, we bought them 3 years ago at Wal-Mart. LOVE THEM!!! Can't find them this year for our daughter, so we settled for the plastic ones, wasted my money. She hated putting them on and worse taking them off, and they didn't even help her stay above water. We have used her brothers on her & she swims like a champ. So glad to find that I can order her a pair too!

I have used that for my children. I don't remember what brand we used. I believe that I just bought them from Target. My daughter just used them but now my son needs some. I'm going to look into the floties you talked about. Thanks for the info.

@EmergencyPrepar: I agree; no flotation device should be meant to replace adult supervision! I use these floats in addition to my supervision, and I believe all kids should be taught how to swim, and they also should be taught survival skills in case of emergencies.

They are great but parents need to be careful to still keep an eye on your kids. Don't leave for a second. Another 2 year old drowned and died this week in Tampa, FL...2 other small children almost drown and ended up in hospital. They are OK though. Teaching children to swim is VERY important and of course keeping an eye on your kids every second.

Great Lens. My daughter was so scared of getting into the water in her early years but we got her a swimming vest until she gained some confidence. It allowed her to get used to the water and she loved it.

Great lens about what's available in flotation devices. These can be handy in certain specific situations. I started my daughter on survival swim skills at 18 months, though. I'd rather her not have a false dependence on flotation devices. If she fell in a pool she knows what to do. That's pretty important to me, especially living somewhere where there are lots of pools.

We have some arm floats, but would really like to get a full suit for my son this year. I don't always want to have my hand right on him - I would be in the pool supervising, of course, but this would mean I wouldn't have to physically support him. I've wondered which ones are good ones.
