Papa's Got a Brand New Brag!!

Updated on September 3, 2009

My 15 year old grandson continues to amaze me and bust my buttons with pride. In my last blog about him, I detailed how he scored a game winning home run to end the season and his junior league baseball career.

Now we turn the page to football season. The first game of the season for the Shawnee Mission East (SME) Freshman team was against a town noted for turning out power house teams - Lawrence, Kansas.

If you know your history , you will understand when I state that this game turned out to be another Lawrence massacre (The infamous Kansas-Missouri Border War). This time it was done by the SME Lancer’s football team. East's first play from scrimmage was a 60 yard run straight up the middle for a TD. Lawrence High School consistently played three and out and soon went to four and out as they soon knew they could not stop the Lancers. It was a teaching experience for Lawrence who began running 4 downs just to keep the ball from the Lancers a little longer. . No matter what field position East had, they just barged through to score! Hey, just as well get in some practice. The score by half time was 37 to 0.

What a thrill to watch my grandson! He scored 4 TDs with all but one made on runs of over 35 yards. He also ran in 3 PATs (Points After Touchdown) to bring his total scoring to 30 points. The final score was 56 to 6.

Oh, did I mention he also has the kicking duties, plays as a line backer, and caught a pass for a good gain when he lined up as a tight end? He did not have to punt a single time this game though- just lots of kick offs after his team’s scoring.

Any college scouts reading this?

Proud Papa Gary
