Surfing Pictures and Gifts for Surfers

Updated on October 4, 2014

Cool Finds for Surfers of all Ages

My grandson LOVES to surf. While looking for things that I thought he might like, I a lot more cool stuff than I thought I would. I found posters that can be printed on canvas, all at Zazzle. Then, I also found a few interesting other things, from books to Christmas ornaments so I'm sharing them, too.

I've emailed my grandson a link to a really incredible barrel wave video that has to be seen to be believed.

What fun I've had with this little project! I hope you'll enjoy the things I've found as much as I enjoyed finding them. If you are a surfer, or have a one in the family, maybe something here will be just perfect for you or them. Wouldn't that be nice?

And while I was at it, I thought I would mention one of our local "attractions" here in Central Florida: Ron Jon's Surf Shop. Everyone always wants to see it when they come. So, I found a video that will show you why.

The Defending Champion

A new group of surfing images has now been gathered from around the web. Readers will decide their favorite. After viewing the six images, don't forget to vote for your favorite.

The first image shown, the surfing dolphins, was the clear winner of the last round of voting, with 41% of the votes, beating out the abstract art "In the Palm of My Hand" by a whopping 20 percentage points.

Now, it's time for five new challengers to see if one of them can beat out the dolphins. After viewing the six images, don't forget to vote for your favorite. .

Catching a Wave in Central Florida

Places to catch a wave on Florida's East Coast

While it's not the north shore of Oahu, there are some surfing 'hot spots' in Central Florida.

Generally, you'll find swells from November - March, and water temps, even in winter rarely get lower than 60 degrees F.

During peak hurricane season, tropical systems in the Atlantic can generate some decent waves, though extreme caution should be exercised when such a system starts to approach the vacinity, even if you are a professional with exceptional swimming abilities. There have been instances in which surfers in search of the perfect wave went into the surf with an advancing system never to return. So, pay attention to and HEED the advice of local authorities in that regard. Peak hurricane season is August - October

Cool Gear from Amazon - Great Gift Ideas

Here are some gift ideas for your favorite surfer. Some of surf essentials (like Sticky Bumps) while others are useful, or just plain fun.

In the Barrel Video - Short, but Amazing!

Here's an absolutely amazing video - slow motion footage of a surfer in a twelve foot barrel wave. It's a brief video, and probably worth running twice.

SOME PLACES TO GO SURFING IN CENTRAL FLORIDA

While it's not the north shore of Oahu, there are some surfing 'hot spots' in Central Florida.

Here are a few of the places to catch a good wave on Florida's central east coast, between Daytona Beach and Sebastian Inlet, staring in the north, with Daytona.

1 - Daytona Beach's - Main Street Pier

2 - Ponce Inlet - One of the area's premier spots, can get crowded. (Sharks are not uncommon here)

3 - New Smyrna Inlet - known locally for a wide variety of wave sizes. (Watch for sharks here, too)

4 - Cocoa Beach. Cocoa Beach Pier and "Surf Coity" to the south. Cocoa Beach is home to Ron Jon's Surf shop and also Champion Surfer Kelly Slater.

5 - Sebastian Inlet - Another premier spot. Look for long waves at Monster Hole and wedging at First Peak.

SEE CFLSurf.com for area surf reports and news.

Ron Jon's in Cocoa Beach, Florida - Primo Shopping for Surfers from All Over the World

If you are visiting Central Florida, cruising from Port Canaveral, or if your ship has a port of call there, one of the things you might want to do is visit Ron Jon's Surf Shop. Don't worry- they will be open. They NEVER close! It's a short cab ride from the cruise pier.

It's not your typical little surf shop. Oh, nooooooooo. Two stories, 52,000 sq ft... oh, yeah. Bring your camera and get your pic next to a mammoth surfing sculpture out in front of the colorful art deco building.

Here are some reviews of Ron Jon's from Trip Advisor.

Storm Waves are Serious Business

A Word to the Wise

On a serious note, I'd like to briefly mention the very real danger of venturing into the high surf generated by a passing, approaching, or departing hurricane.

These storms are serious business. While the temporary increase in wave activity may look seem enticing to surfers, it can also be deadly. Even the most experienced surfers and the strongest swimmers are NOT immune to the very real danger posed by this rough surf and the accompanying vicious rip currents.

It seems like every year, surfers flock to the beach just before or after a hurricane, lured by dreams of catching the perfect wave. And, every year, it seems like there's one of those who never makes it back to the beach at all.

This past August (2014) Hurricane Marie kicked up the ocean as she passed well to the west of the California coast, never nearing land. Those waves took the life of a surfer at Malibu.

Please don't be the one who doesn't come back. You can be sure you won't by resisting the temptation to go out with your board in the days before, during, and after a hurricane is in the vacinity.

Please don't be that one. Don't take the chance.

A Surfing Santa for Your Holiday Tree

If you're a surfer, or if there's one in your family, give that favorite pastime a nod during the holidays, by hanging a surfing Santa on your tree.

Surf lovers and other visitors will get a kick out of it.

The one shown here is one of several available on Amazon, any of which would also go well with a beach, tropical or nautical themed tree.

Please take a moment to say hello before catching your next big wave!

Having grown up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, surfing was just something I saw on tv and that the Beach Boys sang about. When I moved to California in my middle years, I was fascinated watching the surfers. My husband he was a surfer when he was young. I would be terrified. You have a nice selection of products.
