Making Your Own Tent Can Be Fun

With summer fast approaching camping season is kicking off. For SCAdians (members of the Society for Creative Anachronisms) that means some upcoming great events. For SCAdians camping takes on a whole new meaning, while standard dome tents are acceptable most SCAdians strive for a medieval looking pavilion so they can camp in the style of medieval royalty.

Members of the SCA aren't the only people that are into really cool home designed tents. Any one who loves the outdoors should consider a homemade tent as an alternative to a store bought one. Online there are hundreds of designs for a variety of different tent styles to fit any need. Making your own tent means you can customize your tent to your needs and camp in style.

Medieval Tents

For a SCAdian camping takes on a whole new meaning that even that irritating word glamping doesn't cover. I have seen pavilion setups with separate rooms for each person, with entire bedroom sets (bed, end tables, dresser, and more), 12 foot and higher ceilings. There is no end to the possibilities when it comes to medieval pavilions. According to some, during cloth of gold Henry VIII had a pavilion built that was meant to look like a castle, by all reports it was quite convincing.

Upcycled Tents

Upcycling takes something old and makes it new again. These tent designs are for the garage sale junkie.

Tipis

The traditional tents of some tribes of Native Americans.

Lean To

These are great shelters that can be built in the woods from materials you find around you.

Permanent Tent Shelters

For something a little more permanent.

Tenting season is indeed right around the corner. My daughter and her family generally take in at least a couple camping trips each year.
