River Rafting Trip on the Grand
Going Down the River
River Rafting! I have never gone rafting before and when I found a coupon on line for a discount for four, I called up three friends and said let's go!.
White water rafting looks and sounds a little scary especially for those who are not great swimmers or have a fear of the water. This trip is not a scary whitewater excursion but a smooth water introduction. Perfect for the beginner!
Grand River Rafting Company in Paris, Ontario has all different types of tours to suit every level. You can work yourself up to those rapids....or not. So this is the story of our summer road trip and our first experience with river rafting. And, lucky us, it poured rain the entire outing, arrghh!

Summer Road Trip to Paris (Ontario that is!)
Okay, so the rafting trip is booked and we are planning our trip. For some strange reason we thought Paris, Ontario was far from the Toronto area. It is really only about one hour away. Even so, we didn't want to get up so early in the morning to drive in. Our river rafting trip was scheduled at 9:30am and we needed to arrive at 9:00am to check in. Just to save on time we decided to say overnight at local hotel.
We chose Comfort Inn in nearby City of Brantford, which is close to Paris, but larger with more choice in accommodations. If you are a hockey fan you will know Brantford as the hometown of Wayne Gretzky. The town of Paris does have accommodations ranging from a luxury hotel to bed and breakfast places but for our needs, we chose the Comfort Inn. The price was right and it was fine for overnight, just a standard hotel meeting basic needs. The Comfort Inn was also located on a main road close to restaurants and nightlife. If you are planning a longer stay it is worth checking out the local Bed and Breakfasts in Paris.

Have You ever Gone River Rafting?
Going Down The River in A Raft....
During our river rafting trip - it poured rain - but in spite of this we were determined to have a good time and we did.
This is a calm water rafting trip, great for beginners who want to work up to that whitewater stuff. The rafts are large and roomy, there were 9 of us on the one raft including our guide.
Yes, we had a guide and he did most of the paddling and directing, although we all had paddles and could help when needed. Our guide was very informative and talked about the history of the area throughout the trip.
We stopped about 2/3 of the way in for a hike through the woods. There we continued to be educated on edible plants and how to avoid stepping in poison ivy! The wooded area provided a protective canopy from the rain which would not let up!
At points during the trip, the water was quite shallow and we got stuck on the rocks. Our guide jumped out to maneuver us out of sticky situations. At one point we got really stuck and a couple of us jumped out to give him a hand, it was great fun.
I loved paddling along with one leg dangling in the water. It was an awesome trip in spite of the rain. Getting away from the city and being so close to nature was refreshing. We saw deer on the banks, blue heron, turtles and more birds species than I can possibly name!
River Rafting You will Get WET
Soo..wearing denim is not a good idea as denim does not dry out.
Nylon material is recommended.
Dining on the River after Your Rafting Trip
After our river rafting trip we were soaked to say the least. Luckily we had brought a change of dry clothes! Just a few minutes from the rafting point was a recreation centre with open and very clean washrooms where we changed and then walked into the town of Paris for something to eat. We were STARVING.
Paris is a beautiful little town, in fact it has been named the prettiest town in Canada. The Main street is lined with little shops and cafes that back onto the river. We found a cafe called "2 Rivers". It had a balcony where you could sit outside with a view of the river. It was still raining so we sat inside up close to the window so we could still enjoy the view without getting wet again!
The food was terrific and really hit the spot. I had the vegetable wraps with sweet potato fries. Yum! After our meal and just a quick block away we found a quaint little bakery with great prices for freshly baked goods. We stocked up on strudel, cookies and brownies to bring back home.
I would have enjoyed looking through all the shops but we had time constraints. I definitely will return to Paris, hopefully in the fall to see the fall colours. The banks of the Grand River are lined with forest and are sure to be gorgeous at that time of year.
