Olympic Champion Snowboarder Shaun White

Shaun White has achieved worldwide notoriety in both snowboarding and skateboarding. His insane skills along with instantly recognizable looks make him one of the most recognizable sports figures of his time.

Nicknamed the 'Flying Tomato' due to his masses of flaming red hair, Shaun White has created a name for himself worldwide as a pro snowboarder who is driven and able to make complicated moves appear simple.

In February of 2010, Shaun White blasted Olympic records in snowboarding with his second Olympic gold medal! With already a sure gold medal under his belt, he took his second run in the snowboard halfpipe and landed the Double McTwist 1260! This is surely a moment in Olympic snowboarding to be celebrated.

Shaun White - Early Life

The Young Flying Tomato

Shaun was born in San Diego, California in 1986. He underwent some major surgeries before the age of two for a heart defect, yet proved himself to be anything but frail by competing in sports like surfing, soccer and snowboarding at a young age.

Shaun grew up in a family of five. The family loved to ski, but with no close mountain resorts, they would take weekend road trips up to local mountains. At the age of four, Shaun proved to be fearless on his skis as he raced down the slopes with older brother Jesse.

At age six, his mom his mom decided to put him on a snowboard in an attempt to slow him down. She pretty much told him to copy whatever his brother Jesse did. Shaun did just that, however it only encouraged him to go even faster.

Career History of Shaun White as an Athlete

He met Tony Hawk at age 9, who mentored him in skateboarding.

At age seven, Shaun entered his first amateur snowboard contest. He won and so earned a wildcard entry into the Nationals. There he placed just outside of the top 10. Around the same time his mom sent Burton a homemade video of Shaun. That company happened to be developing a kid-sized snowboard line at that time. They were impressed, and offered to sponsor Shaun. With that support of Burton, Shaun turned pro at age 13.

As an amateur Shaun had won five national titles, then his first major win as a pro in 2001 at the Arctic Challenge. He earned his first Winter X Games medal when he was 16, and has stood on the Winter X podium every year since. Shaun now holds 16 medals from the X Games between skateboarding and snowboarding. A record 10 of those medals are gold.

During the same time frame, Tony Hawk met Shaun at a local skatepark and mentored the boy as a skateboarder around the age of 9 or so. Shaun turn pro in skateboarding at the age of 17. In the 2003 Summer and Winter X Games, Shaun was the first athlete ever to both compete and medal in two different sports. This was topped off with the title of Action Sports Tour Champion in 2007.

Shaun failed to make the 2002 Winter Olympic lineup in 2002, missing by only three tenths of a point a spot on the US Team. He made up for this in 2006 however. He went undefeated with 12 victories that season and became the first athlete ever to sweep the all 5 events at the U.S. Grand Prix series.

Shaun was recently able to introduce new tricks to the snowboard world with the help of Red Bull. A halfpipe was created with the first-ever on-mountain foam pit in the history of snowboarding. This Red Bull foam pit allowed Shaun to attempt tricks never before possible, which include the first ever back-to-back double cork variations.

I love watching him. I just saw a news report where he says he doesn't want to be called the Flying Tomato anymore.
