Why I Love Shrimp Boats

Updated on December 6, 2015

Photo taken on the South Carolina Coast

I Love Shrimp Boats!

Shrimp Boats fascinate me. The horrific Oil Leak of 2010 really had me thinking a lot about the them and their owners. My prayers certainly continue to go out to the shrimpers, their families, and their communities.

I was an adult by the time I actually saw one up close and ever since then I have been so intrigued by them. There is just something mystical about them and I could watch one for hours as they make their way through the ocean. I was so inspired after the first time I saw one that I painted the picture below.

Would I like to work on a Shrimp Boat or Trawler? I probably would not last one hour but I can certainly enjoy their beauty from the shore and certainly appreciate those who do work on them.

I think it is so sad that there are so few of them remaining on our South Carolina Coast.

My Painting

by OhMe aka Nancy Hellams

I painted this from a photo I took in Edisto, South Carolina for my husband in 1975 which was the year we started dating. It hung in our den for many years and now hangs in my office. It was painted with lots of love using acrylics. Our son has asked for this painting so one day we will give it to him but for now we are continuing to enjoy.

I haven't done much serious painting for the past few years but plan to get back to it.

I do have some products on Zazzle using this photo that some might be interested in. My cousin ordered a print of the painting and was very pleased.

Jo Stafford and Shrimp Boats A Comin

Shrimp Boats

I am so proud to own the piano music. Such a treasure!

According to Wikipedia, Jo sold more records than any other female artist in 1955.

The Shrimp Boats A Comin - There's Dancin Tonight

Once you get this song on your mind, it is hard to get it off. I love the tune. Yes, I will be humming it for the rest of the day. It almost always puts me in a happier mood as I go about my daily routine with this song on my mind.

Be sure to read the fun story below about a reader who sent me the sheet music by Jo Stafford. I think the sheet music would be great framed and hung near my painting. What do you think?

A Fun Surprise From A Reader

Video Made In Edisto - by OhMe aka Nancy Hellams

I was told in 2009 that the Sara Jane was the only Shrimp Boat that actually stayed on Edisto Island. The others that you see are from surrounding locations. I was also told that they were in the process of building a new Shrimp Boat so maybe we will see it on this year's visit. From time to time I hear that the shrimping industry is actually improving and staging a comeback. I sure hope that is correct information.

My Two Most Favorite Places To Watch The Shrimp Boats - Edisto Island SC and Shem Creek Inn in Mt Pleasant SC

Each year I look forward to my annual trip to Edisto with about 7 other women. We just lazy around and read and watch the ocean. It is so relaxing and really a whole lot of fun. When we were younger, we kept busy all during the day sightseeing or walking on the beach. Now, we are perfectly content to curl up with a good book on the porch. My husband and I love to go to Mt. Pleasant, SC and stay at Shem Creek Inn. I can be totally entertained just sitting on the balcony of our room. Of course, we always get a room facing the creek side. It is about $20 more but well worth it.We also love to go to Wild Dunes and have some very special friends who let us use their condo sometimes.

It has been too long since my last visit to the coast and I am ready to head that way soon! I want to sit back and enjoy watching the beautiful Shrimp Boats.

Nice photos's. It's amazing how the Gulf has recovered from the oil disaster in 2010 - I understand the shrimp fishery is as good as ever despite the doom & gloom predictions of decades of contamination. Nature is wonderful at recovering itself.

In New England where I grew up (and still love to vacation) we watched the lobster boats along the coastal waterways - not the big commercial boats but the one-man operations. It's a hard job to bait, load and unload the heavy traps to catch a tasty lobster from the cold Atlantic. I've seen a few shrimpers and I do love the taste of Gulf shrimp. Hopefully the oil won't destroy the habitat for our wildlife and the folks who fish the south coastal bays and sea.

What a great lens! Very educational. I will certainly nominate you today... I loved the addition of the YouTube video and "Shrimp Boats is a Comin..." As one who currently winters on the coast of South Carolina, I occasionally see a shrimp boat out on the ocean, and always wonder what life is like for people who work at sea. You did a great job on behalf of people who work on a shrimp boat. I also add my own good wishes to Pat Boyer, who commented below, and who is hurting these days. Terrific story about Shrimp Boats - fabulous photos --- and I LOVE your painting! We spent many years camping at Hunting Island State Park outside Beaufort, SC and used so enjoy watching the Shrimp Boats come in from the ocean about 4:00 in the afternoon. We'd give them about an hour to 'unload', then go over to the facility on Lady's Island where they would be sorting and cleaning the shrimp and purchase a couple pounds of shrimp "fresh - practically immediately off the shrimp boat", take them back to the campsite and 'boil' them in a big pot of water on our camp stove for dinner. NOTHING tastes better than eating fresh shrimp out in the open air! Our youngest could peel shrimp like an expert at 2-1/2 years old and our whole family loves shrimp to this day.

The closest I've been to seeing a shrimp boat was watching the movie, "Forest Gump." This is a beautiful, educational lens.
