origin of silambam

There are several stories of origin of silambam like it was originated from ancient tamilians when they roam around jungle for their food and other needs they has to face dangerous animals they used stick to protect themselves from that animals but..

There is no evidential records to prove this statement but it may true because all the ancient cave arts which were engraved described ancient human with stick and many other weapons [see image]

Some where this art has originated but one thing is sure that it is mother of all martial arts . because when whole world is uncivilized tamilians were very well civilized and they maintain organised system. [best example for this statement is thirukural which was narated by thiruvalluvar the period of thirukkural is unknown, Thirukkural discuss about all aspects of human life ]. this shows tamilians were very well civilized when this world is just migrating towards civilization.

When we look on that aspect silambam must be the mother of all martial art.

There are some traces in silapathikaram which was wrote 2nd century B.C. on silapathikaram narates that silambam sticks was displayed for sale in pandiyas ruling.

About silambam

Even This term silambam has many different opinions some one says that term silambam derived from meaning of hill, and some one demands that silambam this whole word stands for sound while playing silambam sound was automatically created while playing silambam.

There is no prompt evidence of who named this as silambam. but it was teached by sapthrishi agastihiyar who is one of the known siddhar in india. there was folklore that lord murugan had teached agasthiyar this silambam at mountains of vellimalai.

There are many ancient books which has the fighting theories in verse they are KAMBU SUTHIRAM, KURUNTHADI SILAMBAM, NADASARI. All this books are meant to be rare now a days.

Silambam was the major part in their warfare kings like maruthu pandiyas, kattabomman, pulithevar used this silambam in their army against british army. British army struggled to face this silambam attack. After india came colony of british they banned silambam. On that time the masters trained silambam to their students very secretely.
