The Great Snowsports Debate: Snowboarding vs Skiing - Which is Better?

It's an interesting debate, Skiing vs Snowboarding - which one is better? At our house the argument rages on each winter. We are a family with two teens, one who is an avid snowboarder, the other is a skier. Both girls are extreme athletes, both prefer to be in the half pipe over any other area of their sport, both have held the Jr national championship title for multiple years and both have been named to their respective national team.

Honestly, even if I had an opinion on skiing vs snowboarding, I wouldn't dare express it in my home. However, I can start an on-line debate and open it up to you. So, here is your chance to express your opinion, and if you participate in either of these downhill winter snow sports, you probably have a pretty strong opinion already.

So, which is the better choice, to ski or to snowboard. Here is your opportunity to tell us what you think. (Me, I would pick a summer sport, but we will save that for another debate.)

Select your favorite here, and if you have a good reason for your choice, please scroll to the next section and tell us why

any one who thinks that sking is harder and or cooler than snowboarding is obvisouly stupid and not popular in highschool and is probably a 40 year old strict parent that goes to work everyday to a horrible job has an unhappyfamily life and pronaly takes his kids to the mountains to practice something that is not nearly as fun as the other option so they can gow up to become stupid uptight jerks just like him. In final ive done both snowboarding is way funner do it over sking with out a doubt

    • anonymous 2 years ago

Zachary ur retardid "i think in the future there will be a lot more snowboarders on the hill." completely untrue snowboarding sales are going down. look it up.

    • anonymous 2 years ago

Skiing has more freedom and takes more skill. Skiers have two platforms so in the park they can do many more grabs unlike snowboarders which only have one board. Skiers can ski more technical lines and ski faster. For example the world record for fastest ski speed was 157 mph compared to a snowboarder which got 125.459mph. Snowboarding is often advertised as the better sport for tricks but really in skiing we can do just as much. Back in 1983 a triple twisting quadruple backflip was done. Snowboarding tricks barely even compare to skiing tricks.

      Skiing rocks snowboarding SUCKS!!!!

    • anonymous 3 years ago

Skiing, according to my instructor, is far more technical; a lot more to learn to get to expert skiing. I prefer a more challenging sport!

Snowboarding is for those who want two broken wrists and want to be at a stand still on flat snow. Its not all downhill all the time!

    • anonymous 3 years ago

      Skiing is elegant

    • anonymous 3 years ago

snowboarding is easy as hell all you have to do is slide down and you're done and ya sure skiing you can pizza all the way down if you'd like but skiing for REAL takes lots of skill and technique

    • Jackowacko LM 3 years ago

Snowboarding is only better in deep snow. I used to be a racer on skis for our national team, so I have a little right to say so as I know what skiing really is.

I love to ski deep powder snow on skis. The feeling is amazing.

But one day I had to belief it, I had to try snowboarding. I really hate it how the board is limiting your movements with your feet. I hate it the way you can fall backwards on to your head. I hate it when the slope goes uphill. I liked it when I started to carve, but stopped liking it the moment I dove into steep slopes with mugles in them. I hate it to feel so vulnerable, when skiers pass you on such a small distance.

      I guess I didn't like it.

Until I found some deep powder. Wow!. You are actually riding on top of the snow effortlessly. I felt like an angle, almost no sound, just the pressure on your legs and the immense rush.

      I loved it.

I've done helicopter skiing, but these small rides on a snowboard in powdersnow really did it for me. So, I say, snowboarding is thé ride in deep powder snow.

    • anonymous 3 years ago

Skiing, all the way. Snowboarding takes ages just to learn how to go down the hill without falling. Any beginner skier can slide down the hill in a pizza, but it takes skill to TRULY ski. Furthermore, the definition of a 'master' snowboarder is being able to go down the hill without falling. What I'm trying to say is, there is an exponentially bigger skill range for skiers.

    • anonymous 3 years ago

The 1 thing that pushes me against snowboarders, is all the new people. They slide down easy blacks without actually boarding them, and leave munched up ice behind them! I have nothing against good boarders.. I just rarely see them; there seems to be an abundance of bad ones.

    • anonymous 3 years ago

skiing all the way. i personally have nothing against boarders but their general attitude is a disgrace. we do not flick you with ski poles! we are not old! we have much better park tricks. we don't have to stop in the MIDDLE OF THE GOD DAMN RUN and yeah i could go on forever

    • Fransterl 3 years ago

Skiing is so much better! When skiing you have more control and when skiing mogels are a lot easier! Also snowboarders are always cutting people off and trying to do stupid tricks when they aren't even in the terrain park! Snowboarders please get OFF our hills1

    • anonymous 3 years ago

why do hockey players wear 2 skates with 1 blade each instead of pushing a board on ice?

unless you have powder, snowboarding is painful

and any new powder gets smashed by the groomerz

I will be transitioning to split boarding - so I can get powder for a board - and so I can afford to pay my billz

    • anonymous 3 years ago

also, surfing and skateboarding were made for boards..

the board can dig into the water, and the trucks flex to turn on pavement.

but on packed snow, you only use the tiny edge of your snowboard - which hurts your feet - and that is why snowboarders are always sitting down - their feet hurt so freakin much

and that is not fun at all

    • anonymous 3 years ago

I do both... boarding is only good when you are in the park or riding powder - which is almost usually never

the park stuff is hard to do (unless you have smaller features - non-professional)

so most of the time you are just doing groomers because the ski staff HATES to let ANY powder not get trampled... (my biggest complaint)

so it is easier to ride hard pack on 2 planks than to ride on a quarter inch edge of a snowboard and hurt your feet from the strain

but, if you do get lucky and have powder, then boarding is a thousand times better!

    • anonymous 4 years ago

Skiing is so much better, at every age! There is so much more talent needed to be a good skier, but it is fun for everyone. The range and difficulty of skiing is much more diverse.

    No way! Snowboarding Rules!

Snowboarding of course. You just can't compare crosses with the classic Method, snowboarding looks way cooler and skiers don't get pussy in any resort, unless you're Zac Efron. Now let's talk about equipment, snowboarders only have to concern about one board and the boots are comfy. Skiers have 4 pieces of metal to take care, the 2 skis and the sticks, and if you fall, everything goes flying everywhere and one of your skis could end up above you, not to mention the rock hard boots. Sticks can be useful on flat parts but that's when we ask for a tow and don't necessarily need to unstrap. So, snowboarding all the way.

      • anonymous 2 years ago

Skiers are snobs, you don't see any resorts that don't allow skiers because us snowboarders are much more accepting than those bratty skiers that demand resorts all to themselves

      • anon 2 years ago

snowboarding definitely. its true we fall over heaps (especially when we are beginning) but ya can generally get up and going pretty much sinulataneously. Sking, if u fall over more often than not results in worse injuries to the knees inparticular (acl) and it often never heals completely. Plus freestyle snowboarding looks heaps more natural. Also my dad skis and he looks like a leprechaun in his onesie.

      • the truth 2 years ago

you are mostly all wrong, everybody is going to have an opinion based on their style. Therefore you are all just making fools out of yourselves.... we can only look at the facts. Skiing is faster and better on harder snow or moguls and for many Snowboarding is more enjoyable in softer snow and back country. But even these facts mean little to nothing because people who ski and snowboard can both go in the back country ride the park and ride groomed and soft snow. If you try to argue that snowboarding has more style you are also wrong because it depends on the person and the trick. In fact because of having your legs separated skiing offers more of a variety of tricks. In the end all I have seen on here are people with bad opinions and bias reasons such as Snowboarders cutting off skiers or all skiers not having as much fun... Both are fun and both offer a ton of possibilities. In the end it comes down to opinion and mine would be snowboarding.

      • anonymous 3 years ago

Skiing is way too vintage - like having smallpox , only its not catchy

      • anonymous 3 years ago

        Snowboards are better

      • anonymous 3 years ago

Why anyone would want 2 planks unsafely attached to them is beyond me.

      • anonymous 3 years ago

Smoother. Harder to learn. Looks cooler. Freestyle (no, there is no such thing as freestyle skiing, it looks horrible)

      • anonymous 3 years ago

i say that snowboarding is better. It is more unique, and the harder it is to control and use, the more fun and unique it really is.

i say snowboarding is better than skiing.

      • anonymous 3 years ago

Before switching to snowboarding i started with skiing. I would go as often as I could for 10 years. Last winter, i decided i wanted to try snowboarding after seeing videos on youtube. I haven t been riding long but what i know is that snowboarding gives me a feeling skiing couldn't give me. Im not thinking of ever changing back to skiing now!

      • anonymous 3 years ago

Snowboarding has so much more style.

      • anonymous 3 years ago

I prefer snowboarding, i find it much more of a challenge then skiing and its much more enjoyable. The fact that there is much interesting and cooler boards then skiing when it comes to graphics. I find a lot of the young age getting more in to snowboarding and theres a reason for that, snowboarding is much more cool and fun then skiing and i think in the future there will be a lot more snowboarders on the hill. Skiing will always be a strong winter sport but snowboarding is growing fast in the winter.

      • anonymous 3 years ago

        Definitely snowboarding!

      • anonymous 3 years ago

Snowboarding is better than skiing for me, because snowboarding is all about having fun. I love riding my board on all conditions ( powder being the best ) and I love moguls fields, you pop your way down them. Some of the skiers comments on here are just rude and have no class. To say you need much more talent to be skier, and get off our hills are just stupid comments.

I board in a mixed group mainly skiers, and we have a great time and understanding of each others pluses and negatives.

Because I hang round with both I know what skiers don't like and they understand what boarders don't. All the times i've been cut up or had people crash into me have be skiers but you won't see me on here complaining about skiers, but skiers love commenting about snowboarders always cutting me up. I even had one woman hate me in a chalet once she found out I was a boarder, something about the noise of a boarder behind scares her so on and so on lol, she didn't talk to me for the rest of the week.

They're both super cool and what ever one you prefer great, just have respect for the other.

Powder is the ultimate pleasure of both sports and snowboard still handles it better :)

      See Both Sports in Action

Here are four of our favorite snow sports videos. Now you can watch both sports and then decide which you think looks "better."

      Warren Miller: Wintervention
      Warren Miller: Wintervention

This movie covers both skiing and snowboarding and it does it through expert in both sports. Although it is a Warren Miller film, he does not actually appear in the movie. The stars of the film are amazing athletes, so of whom we know personally. Maybe that's why it is our number one pick.

When I listen to my kids and their friends, the debate often changes. What makes them think that skiing is awesome, or snowboarding rules? Well for my children it would be fun. Yes, one finds skiing more fun, the other thinks snowboarding it better. But what about:

      • Safety
      • Cost

I absolutely love snow, but I think the thing I would most like to do is to give bobsleigh a go......not too fast tho! I like to toboggan! I'm probably the oldest tobogganer in town, lol! Mind you, we can't get up into the hills where I live, if it snows, so I have to content myself with gentle slopes! Probably save myself some injuries that way tho, lol! ð

This debate has been going for a very long time now. I think people just prefer one over the other and don't really know why. I'm into skiing and just think it is the more technical and traditional way to fly down the slopes.
