The Top MMA Female Fighters

Updated on December 7, 2017

The Top MMA Female Fighters

I do a lot of write ups on the female fighters in mixed martial arts.

Except for the Cris Santos/Gina Carano fight awhile back, female MMA really doesn't get as much coverage as the MMA guys do.

But these ladies train and work just as hard as their male counterparts.

In Japan you have the Valkyrie and JEWELS (formerly Smackgirl) promotions that showcase women, but in the US, it's just not as popular.

The old EliteXC MMA promotion had female fighters, and now Strikeforce seems to be trying to give the ladies a chance.

But the UFC (back when this was written) still seems to be resistant.

Here are a few of the most talented and most popular female MMA stars today.

Update: In case you didn't notice this article is being updated so forgive me for any thing that's not up to date yet. I'm working on it.

Cristiane Justino (Cristiane Santos)

Cristiane Justino (Cristiane Santos)

Featherweight Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino (nee Santos) (17-1-1) was born on July 9th, 1985 in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil.

At five foot eight, 144 pounds, she is pretty much an unstoppable force in the ring.

But after defeating Hiroko Yamanaka at Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal on December 17th, 2011 in sixteen seconds of the first round, Cris tested positive for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid.

She was stripped of the Strikeforce Women's Featherweight Championship, had her license suspended for one year and was fined $2,500.

Since then she has returned to MMA and defeated Marloes Coenen and Fiona Muxlow, winning the Invicta FC World Featherweight Championship.

Moving back to Bantamweight, we have Miesha "Cupcake" Tate (18-6-0).

Miesha was born on August 18th, 1986 in Tacoma, Washington, United States.

This five foot six 134 pound female MMA fighter could be the next "Female Face of MMA".

She is trained in Wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu.

Marloes Coenen

Here is a lady that several people thought might put an end to Cris's domination, Dutch born MMA fighter Marloes "Rumina" Coenen (23-7-0).
Marloes was born on March 31st, 1981 in Olst, Netherlands.
This five foot nine, 145 pound Dutch Style Submission Grappling expert fell to Santos at Strikeforce Miami on January 30th, 2010.
But don't count her out yet.
She dropped some weight and took out Sarah Kaufman at Strikeforce: San Jose on October 9th, 2010 for the Strikeforce Women's Welterweight Championship.

Lisa Ellis (Lisa Ward)

Lisa Ellis (Lisa Ward)

Standing five foot four and weighing 115 pounds, you wouldn't think much about taking Lisa Ellis-Ward (15-10-0) on.

But this young lady is trained in wrestling and jiu-jitsu, and 10 out of those 14 wins have been via submission.

She is the sixth highest rated Flyweight (107-115 pounds) in the world.

Ronda Rousey

I'm not gonna say a whole lot about Ronda Rousey here because I have whole Lens devoted to her.

Let's leave it at the woman looks fantastic in the ring and has earned the title of "Submission Queen" although no one calls her that.

Five pro MMA fights, all ended in submission and only one went over 49 seconds.

You can read more about her here...

Elaina Maxwell

This lovely lady has a ring name that really doesn't seem to fit her...Elaina "Beef" Maxwell.

"Beef"?

Anyway...Elaina first came to everyone's attention when she took on (and lost to) Gina Carano on December 8th, 2006 in Strikeforce's very first female MMA fight.

Elaina lost that fight via Unanimous Decision, but she has gone on to a 7-4-0 record and is currently on a three in a row winning streak and she is rated seventh in the Unified Women's MMA Rankings 145-pound female MMA fighter category.

Her last fight was a win over Ashley Sanchez at RFA 2 - Yvel vs. Alexander on March 30th, 2012 at the United States Viaero Event Center in Kearney, Nebraska.

Arlene "Angelfist" Blencowe was born on April 11, 1983 in New South Wales, Australia.
Like a lot of other current MMA fighters, Arlene started out in boxing.
She held championships in the World Boxing Federation and the Women’s International Boxing Association.
Her boxing record was 4-4-0.
Arlene switched over to MMA in 2014 and now has a 7-5-0 record.
I wonder if her ring name comes from the 1993 film, "Angelfist"?

Your lenses always make me want to get back into my martial arts training and sparring. Too bad I'm not 20 years younger anymore.

I have to say when I first heard about female MMA I was like this is stupid, I figured it was just going to be some hotties with no talent thrown out there to draw attention to the sport. well shows you what I know, these ladies have talent. Thanks for the lens, very good.

Oh and you were my 300th poll taken, nice.

I'm a huge supporter of Women's MMA. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Charmaine Tweet before her fight with Ronda Rousey. I then interviewed Ronda after her win over Charmaine. Ronda is the real deal and should go far in the sport.

I'm a huge MMA fan, it's about time the ladies are being taken seriously. I've seen some great fights with women MMA competitors. Christiane Santos is from Curitiba in Brazil, the same place as Anderson Silva (my absolute favorite MMA fighter) I wonder if they train together
