The Top MMA Female Fighters
The Top MMA Female Fighters
I do a lot of write ups on the female fighters in mixed martial arts.
Except for the Cris Santos/Gina Carano fight awhile back, female MMA really doesn't get as much coverage as the MMA guys do.
But these ladies train and work just as hard as their male counterparts.
In Japan you have the Valkyrie and JEWELS (formerly Smackgirl) promotions that showcase women, but in the US, it's just not as popular.
The old EliteXC MMA promotion had female fighters, and now Strikeforce seems to be trying to give the ladies a chance.
But the UFC (back when this was written) still seems to be resistant.
Here are a few of the most talented and most popular female MMA stars today.
Update: Despite the fact that I have updated this Hub and completed all the goals that HubPages sets for pages, this page is still not featured, which means I may be taking it down soon. Sorry about that.
Cristiane Justino (Cristiane Santos)
Featherweight Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino (nee Santos) (17-1-1) was born on July 9th, 1985 in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil.
At five foot eight, 144 pounds, she is pretty much an unstoppable force in the ring.
But after defeating Hiroko Yamanaka at Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal on December 17th, 2011 in sixteen seconds of the first round, Cris tested positive for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid.
She was stripped of the Strikeforce Women's Featherweight Championship, had her license suspended for one year and was fined $2,500.
Since then she has returned to MMA and defeated Marloes Coenen and Fiona Muxlow, winning the Invicta FC World Featherweight Championship.
Cristiane 'Cyborg' Santos
Moving back to Bantamweight, we have Miesha "Cupcake" Tate (18-6-0).
Miesha was born on August 18th, 1986 in Tacoma, Washington, United States.
This five foot six 134 pound female MMA fighter could be the next "Female Face of MMA".
She is trained in Wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu.
Miesha Tate Chokes Out Holly Holm - UFC 196
Here is a lady that several people thought might put an end to Cris's domination, Dutch born MMA fighter Marloes "Rumina" Coenen (23-7-0).
Marloes was born on March 31st, 1981 in Olst, Netherlands.
This five foot nine, 145 pound Dutch Style Submission Grappling expert fell to Santos at Strikeforce Miami on January 30th, 2010.
But don't count her out yet.
She dropped some weight and took out Sarah Kaufman at Strikeforce: San Jose on October 9th, 2010 for the Strikeforce Women's Welterweight Championship.
Erin Toughill vs Marloes Coenen
Sarah Kaufman was born on September 20,1985 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Sarah is five foot five, 135 pounds and is trained in Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).
So far in her career she has held the Hardcore Championship Fighting Women's Bantamweight Championship and the Strikeforce Women's Welterweight Championship (which she lost to Marloes Coenen).
Her current MMA record is 17-4-1
Ronda Rousey vs Sarah Kaufman
Megumi "Mega Megu" Fujii (26-3-0) was born on April 26th, 1974 in Okayama Prefecture, Japan.
She is five foot three, 115 pounds and is trained in Boxing, Kickboxing, Sambo, Judo, Jujutsu and Catch Wrestling.
Megumi had her 22 and 0 winning streak broken by Zoila "Warrior Princess" Frausto at BFC - Bellator Fighting Championships 34 on October 28th, 2010.
Megumi retired in 2013.
Zoila Frausto (Zoila Gurgel)
The woman that handed Megumi her first loss, Zoila "Warrior Princess" Frausto was born on September 10th, 1983 in Fresno, California.
Zoila married Jorge Gurgel (also a MMA fighter) on February 19,2011.
She is a Flyweight, and her current MMA record is 13-5-0.
Zoila is five foot four and weighs 115 pounds.
Of course on October 28th, 2010, she defeated Megumi Fujii to become the first Bellator 115 lbs Women's Champion.
Lisa Ellis (Lisa Ward)
Standing five foot four and weighing 115 pounds, you wouldn't think much about taking Lisa Ellis-Ward (15-10-0) on.
But this young lady is trained in wrestling and jiu-jitsu, and 10 out of those 14 wins have been via submission.
She is the sixth highest rated Flyweight (107-115 pounds) in the world.
Moving back to Bantamweight fighters, we have Roxanne "The Happy Warrior" Modafferi (19-12-0).
She was born on September 24th, 1982 in Wilmington, Delaware, and is five foot seven and weighs in at 135.
Roxanne is trained in Kempo, Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Flyweight, Jessica "Jag" Aguilar has a MMA record of 19-5-0.
She was born on May 8th, 1982 in Houston Texas, and is five foot four, 113 pounds.
Jessica is one of the few openly gay fighters in MMA.
Jessica "Evil" Eye was born on July 27th, 1986 in Parma, Ohio.
She is a Super Flyweight (116-125 pounds) and has a MMA record of 11-5-0.
Jessica was undefeated until she ran into Aisling Daly at NAAFS - Fight Night in the Flats 7 on June 4th, 2011 at the Nautica Pavilion in Cleveland, Ohio.
She lost to Aisling via submission in the 2nd round of a 5 round fight.
I'm not gonna say a whole lot about Ronda Rousey here because I have whole Lens devoted to her.
Let's leave it at the woman looks fantastic in the ring and has earned the title of "Submission Queen" although no one calls her that.
Five pro MMA fights, all ended in submission and only one went over 49 seconds.
You can read more about her here...
This lovely lady has a ring name that really doesn't seem to fit her...Elaina "Beef" Maxwell.
Anyway...Elaina first came to everyone's attention when she took on (and lost to) Gina Carano on December 8th, 2006 in Strikeforce's very first female MMA fight.
Elaina lost that fight via Unanimous Decision, but she has gone on to a 7-4-0 record and is currently on a three in a row winning streak and she is rated seventh in the Unified Women's MMA Rankings 145-pound female MMA fighter category.
Her last fight was a win over Ashley Sanchez at RFA 2 - Yvel vs. Alexander on March 30th, 2012 at the United States Viaero Event Center in Kearney, Nebraska.
Amanda "Lioness" Nunes
Brazilian MMA Fighter Amanda Nunes was born on May 30, 1988 in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.
She is five foot eight, 135 pounds and is trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo.
Her current MMA record is 13-4-0.
As of this writing, she is the current UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion.
Arlene "Angelfist" Blencowe was born on April 11, 1983 in New South Wales, Australia.
Like a lot of other current MMA fighters, Arlene started out in boxing.
She held championships in the World Boxing Federation and the Women’s International Boxing Association.
Her boxing record was 4-4-0.
Arlene switched over to MMA in 2014 and now has a 7-5-0 record.
I wonder if her ring name comes from the 1993 film, "Angelfist"?
Currently ranked the number 7 female mixed martial artist in the world by the WMMA, Megan Anderson is an Australian fighter who competes in Invicta.
She is six feet tall and weighs 145 pounds.
Her current MMA record is 7-2-0 with three KOs or TKOs, two submissions and two decisions.
