You Will Never Walk Alone

A supporters view of Steven Gerrard

Today marks the last match the mercurial Steven Gerrard plays for Liverpool. He has done so much for Liverpool in what football plaudits call golden generation of England midfield players. So many analysts have even compared his playing prowess to that of Frank Lampard. Something not in doubt is that Gerrard is one of the best players to have graced Anfield – the Liverpool playing ground.

The first time I watched him playing I could not help but admire his style. I told a friend then that this young man has some way to go. I even correctly predicted that Gerald would be called up to the national team at a very young age. Gerrard has been simply breathtaking. Infact I think he should have been made captain of both the Liverpool and England teams long before he eventually did.

So today heralds the end of his playing career at Liverpool. I am sure he will come back to the team to take up another role in the staff. In my time, few players earn the recognition of Legend for all the right reasons. Gerald has earned that title in so many ways other than just playing beautifully. He has avoided controversy and scandals. This has been an inspiration to many young players. I am slightly older than Gerald but I identify so much with his success – the only blot being his inability to win the premier league with Liverpool. I can only wish him the very best in his future endeavors.

It is going to be sad and very emotional for all Liverpool fans today. Gerald himself has indicated that and said that he hopes to remember the immense support the fans and everyone at Liverpool have given him. I hope he at the very least scores though I doubt he will complete the full ninety minutes.

The thoughts I express about Gerald and my own having watched Liverpool for over ten years. This however is a true football fan’s perspective. I do not support Liverpool –I support the other Red – the devilish one – Manchester United.

You might want to change his name throughout your hub to GERRARD instead of Gerald. Just a thought...
