Is The Total Gym Right For You?

Total Gym XLS

Total Gym Review

You have probably seen the Total Gym on television and wondered if it really works like they say it does and also probably wondered if it would be a good fit for you and your long and short term health and fitness goals.

While the the infomercials often star Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley, whom are both known for having fit bodies and living a healthy lifestyle, over the last few years they have also been showing more average types like you and me.

You know, those who may have not exercised in years and want to turn back the clock and get back the body they once had and even those who throughout their entire lives never had the body that they wanted and are now wanting to make the commitment of a healthier and more fit body.

What you probably didn't know is that Chuck Norris has been using this home gym for over 30 years (yes, 30 + years) to help build and keep lean muscle, stay strong and keep his body firm and masculine. What started as a way to help rehabilitate his torn rotator cuff tuned into a lifelong habit. And that's what you want to do - make a lifetime commitment.

Sure it's great to have short term goals like losing the extra flab or bulking up to look great in your cloths, but this machine has the stuff to totally change your life if you are willing do set aside 20 minutes or so 3-4 times a week.

You may also be surprised to know that there are several different models available as many think that there is just one.The Fit is the newest model and has many upgrades that are a nice addition to the line.

I know that there are many jokes about him getting older (I find it hard to believe that he has already turned 73) but you do have to admit that he looks good for his age & I'm not talking about lines or wrinkles but his fitness level and health.

This home fitness system has been getting people fit, slimming them down and reshaping their bodies since '74 - that's quite a long time ( 40 years) and that kind of tells you something - people see and feel results.

Christie, as you may have imagined, does a totally different workout than Chuck, and Christie has been using it for over 16 years to help stay slim, trim and keep her body curvy and feminine. If you Google or Bing her name you'll see recent photos and she how good she looks today.

You have to agree, that they both look great and look better than most people half their age and yes, they both believe in having a healthy diet is essential.

Probably one of my favorite reasons why I like this home gym is that both men and women can use it and achieve different results. In the past my husband and I always used different gym equipment and not only was it expensive to purchase a different workout machine for each of us but our house isn't that big and they started getting in the way.

With this system both can use the same machine saving both money and space while getting the workout that you want.

So whether you are looking for a great ab workout or looking to build and bulk up this one workout machine is like having a gym membership for both of you.

It is also the type of fitness equipment that is simple enough for a new user to get accustomed to but is built strong and durable enough to take on even an experienced user giving the workout they expect and demand.

On this page we will take a look at this total fitness gym, the exercises that can be performed on it, what results can be expected and why many people consider it the Best Home Gym - then you can decide whether it's right for you.

How Much Room Do I Need?

Strength Training & Body Shaping Even In Small Spaces

Your compact home gym folds flat for storage against a wall, in a closet or under a bed. It actually folds down to just a little it larger than an ironing board. Measuring it against my ironing board it is about 1 and one-half inch thicker.

When it's folded up the measurements are 19" Width x 51" Length x 9" Height.

The open dimensions are 19" W x 90" L x 43" H

Our living room is a decent size but we really don't want to have different pieces of fitness equipment in our living room so we have decided that one of our bedrooms would be a better choice. Even in this smaller area space isn't an issue.

This home gym comes fully assembled so you can start your first workout in just minutes after receiving your box.

But please get to know your home fitness system by watching the DVD that is included along with all paperwork that comes with your product.

It's much better to use your strength training equipment correctly and to perform the exercises the right way, then to just rush to use it and find yourself getting injured. So please although you may be excited to try it out - be safe - take your time and get to know your total body workout machine.

So How Many Exercises Can You Do With Each Model?

Model Comparison

With the XLS home gym system you can perform more than 80 different exercises, targeting all areas of your body, isolating muscle groups or working muscle groups together depending on your workout choices.

Ok, so you see that you can do over 80 exercises but does that really sink in?

Think about it, right now how many exercises are you doing during your workouts?

6 - maybe 10 if you are the average person.

Hardcore exerciser - you're probably doing 16, possibly 19. Not many do more than that.

With the XLS you can choose from 80 plus which can really help you target the areas that you want to work on.

Yes, there is the possibility that you are going to have a specific group of exercises that will be your main workouts but you have the option of adding a different one or two each week or rotating your choice of exercises.

Varying your exercise routine on a regular basis will help to create muscle confusion which we all know helps to get the most out of our workouts.

Although on the surface it appears to be just a muscle builder and strengthener, you can also use it for your cardio workouts by shortening the time between each exercise.

This will help to build muscle, strengthen your cardiovascular system and blast fat.

Unlike slower cardio like walking which doesn't burn fat, when you strength train you'll boost your metabolism and burn more calories each day. As you add more lean muscle to your body your body will burn more calories as it take more calories to sustain muscle as it does fat.

If you are new to strength training and have not worked out for a while you already know that you should start slowly and then work up as you gain strength and endurance.

However what you may not be aware of is that muscle weighs more than fat does, so if you are a scale watcher you may want to avoid using the scale and let the way your clothes fit be your guide if you are looking to lose weight in addition to building muscle.

Although muscle does weigh more than fat it is more compact so if you use a scale to watch your weight you may see your numbers go up while your body slims down.

With strength training you can build muscle while burning fat (yes, you can do both at the same time).

During your workout you can isolate different areas of your body or do a full Total Body workout - the choice is yours.

There are several different versions available for home use.

The Total Gym XLS with more than 80 possible different exercises is the most popular of the different systems. This is the one that you normally see on TV and is advertised the most.

With The 2000 you can complete 40 possible exercises

The New FIT has 12 levels of resistance and with it you can complete over 85 exercises.

There is also the GTS Professional model which will allow you to perform over 200 different exercises and would be the perfect choice if you are a fan of the GRAVITY ® fitness program. This one is really geared towards the expert.

The Total Gym Sport ® is an exciting entry into this line and is the choice for fitness professionals with its commercial grade quality and level of exercise levels and variations. While home users are probably not going to want to invest in a machine of this caliber in their home those that are into sports professionally or need to stay fit for their careers may find that they may want one in their home.

One of the things that surprises most people when they start to use this system is just how good it is on isolating the ab area and giving a great ab workout. This is probably why more women are now using this home gym than ever before.

I'm not saying that men don't have problems with their belly area, but it just seems that after we have children, us ladies have a hard time getting and keeping a flatter ab area.

I know for me, that as I get older, it much harder to keep it toned and find that unless I take care of my ab area, I can see it quickly starting to puff and sag a bit.

Watching what you eat and working out seems to get more important year after year if you want to slim down and maintain a youthful appearance.

Plus taking care of your core and keeping it strong not only helps to make you look good but it also helps with your posture and can also help in keeping back pain and back complaints away.

So when you are working your core remember that it's not just for looks but for the health of your body.

Can you do Pilates on the XLS ?

Yes, strength training and body building is it's main core. ..but

Over the years this exercise system was known predominantly as a strength training and body building machine and while nothing has changed in the machine itself more people are getting to know a different side of it. for With this system you can use it like you would a Pilates reformer.

You can also do many of the standard TG exercises however, you will keep the incline lower than you would to perform the exercise.

This is the way that Christie stays in shape and the way that you may also like to use your system if you are just looking to slenderize.

To sculpt your body you will keep your bench at a lower incline.

This will allow you to firm, tone and slenderize without building large muscles, just long and lean muscle.

Not familiar with Pilates or what the Pilates exercises are like?

Start Your Workout Today on a Total Gym XLS

I have to say that I love, love, love Pilates

At 63, I find that I don't seem to have as much fun or get as much of the benefits of aerobics as I use to. Sure it helps to keep fit but after the class is over I don't really feel anything long term.

However, with Pilates I have been able to keep my flexibility as I'm almost as flexible as I was in the 20's. Sure I may not be as quick but flexible yes.

I also love that Pilates has helped my muscles stay toned and strong even though I sit at a desk all day.

By using the XLS like a Pilates Reformer you will find that you will be working your entire core to help flatten and tone your tummy area ( upper and lower) while whittling away your muffin top, tightening the back of your arms, firming your booty, toning your thighs and strengthening your chest muscles.

Unlike many other types of exercises, Pilates type movements involve several different muscle groups at one time which allows you to have shorter but much more effective workouts.

It also allows you to exercise in a smaller area and also not have to worry about waking up your neighbors or family members by jumping around like you would with standard aerobic type movements.

However, you should know that Pilates is an excellent aerobic workout as it brings your heart rate up - you're just not jumping and hopping around.

The combination of movements or synergy as it is often called, is what makes your workout sessions shorter than most other types of exercise programs, yet you will begin to see results much quicker.

And this doesn't occur just with the Plates type movements but with many of the other exercises that you can do with the XLS.

Great CrossFit Training

Are you into CrossFit training?

If so then you know that you need to build upper and lower body strength, increase flexibility, increase stamina and endurance and have an all around lean muscle mass so whether you're lifting, box jumping, doing pistols, squatting or just working on the WOD ( the workout of the day), the Total Gym can help you get ready.

Sure CrossFit on it's own is a great training program. However you are going to find that unless you spend a good portion of your day going through and honing each WOD you are going to be weaker on some points and stronger on others.

With TTG you can concentrate on your weaker areas ( and I don't just mean weak as in strength, but weak as in needing more help and that could be strength or it could be stamina or flexibility) and prepare for your CrossFit training.

Working out at home has so many advantages. Thanks for sharing the total gym! It is certainly one that I'll spend some more time checking out.

I Googled âwhat percentage of gym memberships go unusedâ as research for this lens. According to page one of Google, anywhere from 60 to 80 percent of gym memberships collect dust. So if this works for people then do them at home.

@anonymous: queenclarrissa did you know that the Total Gym has a payment system where you can pay it off over 7 months? Your first payment is only $1 and then 7 payments of only $114.09.

That makes it much easier for those who don't want to use a credit card and don't have the full price to pay upfront.

Would like to but on our limited income, cannot afford one. I would like to see the Total Gym XLS be priced a little lower so people that are retired and on fixed income but still would like to be fit could afford one. I think it would be nice to have some type of give away program.

I am looking into one, hence reading this review..but lets please clarify something a pound of fat and a pound of muscle weigh the same 1 pound. but because muscle is leaner and lets say takes up less room than fat as you work out and lose fat but gain muscle you weight may not go down as one would hope. Your body however will show the differences in becoming leaner, as you said clothes will fit better, and you will be stronger.

Admittedly, I have seen the infomercials for this more than once and have been contemplating a purchase for some time now. It helped that I actually trained with Chuck for two years as a kid when he was still living in the San Fernando Valley area of L.A., then he simply got too busy with his acting career. This was before Walker. I really liked the info you have put together here in writing and I may now go ahead and go for it. Thanks.

Love the videos. Chuck is looking a bit slight compared to his beafy "I'll get you Bruce Lee!" days. Moreover, I'm really impressed you can put the gym away for extra space.
