Trailer Hitch Bike Rack Reviews - This Year's Models Reviewed

Updated on September 12, 2015

2013's Trailer Hitch Bike Rack Reviews

This year's trailer hitch bike rack reviews include some of the highest rated and most popular models available on the market. I have owned many different models over the years and have found some of the best systems for transporting bicycles. I am featuring only the models that are the most durable, easy to use, and are among the most popular systems in the industry.

There are many cheap receiver mount models out there that just don't make the cut. Many of them are made of inferior materials that just don't hold up to the rigors of everyday use. Straps wear out and break too often and some are just too difficult to use. The less complicated a system is the better. For me, it is worth paying a few extra bucks to get the best system possible.

Some of the best models allow you to carry two. three, four, and even five bikes safely and with ease. I have used a five unit carrier for a few years now and couldn't be happier. With these carriers you don't have to worry about the system wobbling around or damage to your vehicle from wheels or handle bars banging against the car. They remain secure and in place.

These carriers aren't just for SUV's, they can also be used on some cars. I installed a receiver mount on my Subaru Outback and have never had a problem. If you've been looking for information on a great receiver mounted carrier then I hope this webpage can be of some assistance. Hope you enjoy it.

What Is The Best Trailer Hitch Bike Rack For SUV's?

What styles work best with SUV's?

Fixed position carriers are great for SUV's. With this type of carrier there is no need for annoying straps that attach to your vehicle. This type of system allows additional space between the carrier and the vehicle reducing the risk of contact with the vehicle and damage.

There are several different models available that allow access to the rear of the vehicle without removing the entire unit. Swing away models are probably the most popular type available. They are more expensive than standard fixed-position models but allow easy access to the trunk or hatch. The unit is capable of swinging out and away from the vehicle.

Another popular model that allows rear access is the tilting/folding or parallelogram. This type allows the unit to pull away from the vehicle making it easier to open the rear hatch on most SUV's. This type is most popular with those who have SUV's with a rear access that opens towards the sky.

Here are a few of the most popular swing-away models available:

Spare Tire Mount Bike Rack vs. Trailer Hitch Bike Carrier

What hitch mount systems work best with spare tires?

The spare tire model is a great style for any vehicle with a rear mounted spare tire. The unit is attached through the spare tire with the use of a mounting bracket. With this kind of system you have full access to the rear compartment of the vehicle. Just open the door as you normally would and the rack swings with the door.

for those who prefer to use the 2" receiver there are a few models available that are made just for vehicles with rear mounted spare tires. Normal size models can also be used with the use of a hitch extender. These extenders can be purchased online or at just about any farm supply store.

As for the extenders you can get at the farm supply stores, they work well but I have noticed less stability with the whole system due to the additional space or wiggle room. There are extenders made just for bike racks that eliminate any wobbling or extra play in the unit. These types work great at securing the entire system.

I have seen the spare tire mounted system in use and can verify that it works great. It is very simple to install and is very secure.

Here are a few of the spare tire mounted systems:

What Are The Best Bike Racks For Hitch Mounts?

There are a slew of different receiver style models available. The most widely purchased is the fixed position model. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. There are models available that can hold as many as five bikes.

The fixed position model is by far the most popular system for transporting your favorite two-wheeled vehicles. Receiver style models keep objects from banging against the car and moving around unnecessarily. In addition to added stability there are no straps that need to be secured through the trunk or rear access which can cause damage to the vehicle.

As for which ones are the best, there really isn't one model that is the best. It greatly depends on your needs and what type of vehicle will be used. There is, on the other hand, a few brands out there that are highly rated and among the most popular.

Truck Bed Bike Mount

What Are The Best Pick Up Truck Bike Racks?

Carriers that mount to the bed of a truck is another great way to transport your favorite two-wheeled vehicle. These systems work amazingly well at securing your cargo and keeping it from sliding or bouncing around in the bed.

One model that is extremely popular is the Thule Insta-Gator. This unit uses very strong straps that are simply positioned between the tailgate and the bed of the truck and when the tail gate is closed the system is locked in place. No tools are required for mounting and the systems stays in place. The only draw back is if you want to carry more than one bike then you will have to buy an additional rack. I have only been able to put two of these in a truck at once.

Another popular model is the Sportrack. These systems attach to the inside of the bed of the truck and can hold as many as 4 units at a time. They usually require no tools and hold the front tires securely in place. The rear tires will need to be strapped down with a bungee cord or other strap. Other than that, the system works great.

Platform Style Hitch Mount Rack

What Are The Best Platform Bike Racks?

This style is extremely popular because of how the unit secures the cargo. This system attaches to the wheels instead of the frame and holds the bike in place. Due to the lower positioning, loading and unloading is easier and there is less movement in the system while driving.

The platform works great at helping to position and keep the cargo from moving around. Less stress is placed on the cargo and the mounting bracket making for a sturdier and more secure transport.

Some of these systems even tilt or pull out like the parallelogram/folding models allowing for easy access to the rear door or hatch of the vehicle. These systems are probably the best for cross-country travel and extended trips. Most models hold up to four bicycles and there are less expensive models available that hold two.

I have used these systems in the past and have been extremely pleased with them. They are very well made and make transporting a breeze. I highly recommend these models.

Here are a few of the highest rated platform style systems:
