Used Penn Reels

Updated on March 25, 2013

Used Penn Reels Still Fight The Big One

Probably the best deal that can be had on the market today when you are looking for bargain fishing reels are used penn reels. Used doesn't mean broke and you can bet that if they ain't broke it'll still catch fish. Penn reels are quality fishing reels and just because it's a used penn reel it will still hold the same quality.

New or Used

Keep Your Gear Updated

One of my favorite past times has been and always will be fishing. It's a great hobby to get into, but as with most hobbies, you can sometimes get yourself all caught up in the financial side of things and needing to have some of the latest and greatest equipment on the market. That's one thing that I really like about fishing actually, there's always something new coming out. But you still have to take care of the stuff you got. You need to update your tackle, keep the line clean by replacing it, and sometimes even picking up a new reel.

Fortunately for me, I tend to like the older reels much better and in my hands there's nothing better than a good quality Penn. I don't need a new one, I like the ones with a little age and a lot of years left in them. Plus it's good for the ol' wallet too as you can pick them up at quite affordable prices if you stay on your toes.

Used Penn Reels - Find Quality At A Great Price

When you look at some of the newer models, sometimes you can get sticker shock on them like you would do with a new car. Here's a quick tip for you that I like to look for personally. When you start dealing with older reels, you'll sometimes find yourself going up against a collector looking for the perfect specimen to add to their collection. One of the things that I do is this, I look for one that's in good quality condition but may have a few minor blemishes on the surface. That is, if I'm looking for one to take on the water and put to the test. You'll find that the collector's tend to stay away from these and you can pick them up at auction quite a bit cheaper than you would if you were to get into a bidding war with a collector.

Here's a great video of some of the power these international have. Take a look as George brings up a huge swordfish off the coast of Florida

Quick Reviews - Some I Own Some I Don't

For the most part, I have or have had 4 of the 5 reels listed below. I threw one in there because if I do ever find a deal on it I'm gonna pick it up and give it a whirl. Actually, it's one of the cheaper ones but for some reason I don't like to pay full price on anything fishing anymore. At any rate, here's a quick look at the arsenal and one that will be one day (if my wife let's me get another one that is).

Penn Gold Label Series Slammer Spinning Reel (300-Yard, 20-Pound)
Penn Gold Label Series Slammer Spinning Reel (300-Yard, 20-Pound)

The saltwater anglers choice, and mine too. Great for slamming the big ones from the side of the boat. You'll find some whiners about the drag, but I've never had a problem with mine, I'll go ahead and chalk those up to "user-error".

Penn Pursuit 10/230 Line Capacity 4+1 Bearings 5.2:1 Spinning Reel

Good reel, cheaper than the slammer. Don't have one but if I ever come across it at a decent price, I'll probably pick one up.

Penn Gold Label Series Conquer Spinning Reel (210-Yard, 10-Pound)
Penn Gold Label Series Conquer Spinning Reel (210-Yard, 10-Pound)

Well built and extremely smooth! You'll find reels that are definitely more expensive but no where near as smooth as these babies are.

Penn SSG Graphite Series Spinfisher Spinning Reel (275-Yard, 12-Pound)

One word, SOLID! These are great and versatile little spinning reels that can be used in the bays or right off the shore for running stripers or reds.

Penn Jigmaster 500L Conventional Fishing Reel

Sometimes there's nothing better than the ol' jigmaster. With quick take apart spools you can quickly change line classes to go for those bigger fish on the beach and slim it down to give more line while trolling.

Penn International - Good Quality, Used Gold Line from The Champ

One of probably the biggest names in saltwater fishing reels is Penn International. These reels are simply tough. If you want to fight the big fish and win you are probably going to want a Penn International. These babies will yank in pretty much anything that gets on the line. From offshore to beach front, if you battle the ocean fish do it with a Penn International.

Parts and Accessories - Let No Good Reel Die

I'm of the opinion if you've got a good one, then you should do everything in your power to keep it going. These days getting parts for these older used reels isn't really that hard anymore. Heck, you don't even have to go down to your local tackle store to pick it up with the amount there is online. All you have to do is know what you are looking for which can be quickly found on basically any schematic there is out there.

Vintage Penn Fishing Reels - Antique Penn Fishing Reels

If you are a vintage Penn fishing reels collector you have definitely come to the right place. From time-to-time you will find many different kinds of vintage Penn fishing reels right here for sale. From the exotic to the standard, vintage Penn fishing reels never seem to go out of style and will only add value to your fishing reels collection.
