Waterproof Headphones For Swimming and Sports

Updated on June 26, 2014

Swimming with Music

I once thought that waterproof headphones couldn't be made - but I was wrong. Not too long ago I had the opportunity to try a mp3 player that came with sealed earbuds and the sound quality while swimming and underwater was a lot better than I expected.

To this day I am not completely in the clear with how these gadgets work but work they do and they have transformed how I listen to music.

I now have a submersible media-player earbud combo. No wires and less hassle. While it is perfect for swimming I also use this headset all the time when kayaking.

Sweatproof and waterproof, these earbuds can be submerged down to 12 feet and are perfect for listening to music while swimming

New! This is a watertight case for your iPod shuffle. extra-large controls and can withstand dives to 12 feet. Comes with bass amplified earbuds

Swimming headphones need to be submersible

If you intend to listen to music on the beach or in the pool, make sure you have a headphone which is ok to use for swimming (not just sweat-proof). Also check how deep and long it can be submerged.

I suggest you pick headgear that can take 10 feet or more of water. If you for example dive to the bottom of the pool, that is 6 - 10 feet.

Some headsets only handle a quick submersion of a couple of feet - so those are only for surface activity and snorkeling!

If you are only going to use the headphones above water then there is a lot more on offer.

For active sports i prefer headphones that stay where they belong, not earbuds but rather models with ear hook that rests over the ear. They might look a bit clumsy but they are extremely lightweight and made from pliable materials.

Try some on and it is easy to forget they are there.

These headsets are humidity and sweat-proof, so you can use them while running, even in rain.

MP3 Players for Swimming

Wire-free mp3 player headset which is designed for swimmers and sport. Offers a 10 hour playback on a single charge.

RMKF hifi earbuds

I got to try these and the audio quality is surprisingly good considering the full waterproofing these have.

The primary function of a listening to music while swimming is to find your rhythm, and to relieve boredom of making countless laps. So while these won't give you hifi audio you won't be able to tell the difference with the water and splashing going on around you. The beat is there though.

This is a great headset for swimming since it has good audio and can handle 30 foot dives.

Best of all - they come at a ridiculously low price.

Electronics that can get wet

What is your preference when it comes to audio headgear and water sports?
