What to wear to a zumba class

Updated on August 27, 2013

Introduction to Zumba

Are you looking for ideas on what to wear to a zumba class? Although your regular workout clothing may work just fine, zumba gear is slightly different, due to the nature of the exercise that originated from latino dance moves. The high intensity workout was created by Alberto (Beto) Perez. Beto had a vision of designing a fun routine that would feel more like a party than exercise - the type of workout system you would look forward to vs dreading it. A native of Colombia, Alberto has an extensive background in fitness training and choreography. He came up with the Zumba program in mid 90's to help his celebrity clients stay in top shape. The dance/ exercise routine was inspired by traditional Latin music - salsa, merengue, cumbia, and samba and is based on the concept of aerobic interval training (combination of time-consuming moderate exercise and high intensity workouts). In 1999, Beto introduced the program in the US, and, in the recent years, it has become an extremely popular workout for both, men and women of all ages. The fun workout program has helped many people get in shape, loose weight, and, as a result, feel good about themselves. An average 1-hour long zumba class can help you burn over 500 calories per workout.

What to wear to a Zumba class

Since Zumba program is based on Latino dance moves, Zumba workout clothes should be somewhat similar to what you would wear to a Latino dance class. They should be comfortable, stretchy, and made out of breathable fabrics. For ladies, a sports bra or a top with a built-in bra is highly recommended. If you are just starting out, regular athletic clothing may work for you, but if you are committed to Zumba and plan on attending Zumba Fitness classes regularly, you may want to invest into workout clothing made specifically for Zumba. Most importantly, wear athletic clothing that makes you feel good about yourself. When attending a fitness class at your local sports club, you should not be feeling self-conscious about what you are wearing, so that you can get the most out of the workout. It's important to be relaxed and have fun, in order to get the results you want. And if you feel good about yourself, you are more likely to continue your exercise program and eventually meet your fitness goals.

Comfortable, stretchy, stylish athletic wear that makes you feel good about yourself

Zumba shirts for women

A sports bra and an athletic top with a relaxed fit work well for Zumba. Longer tank tops are preferred in a group exercise setting. You can wear an athletic top you already own, but I highly recommend that you invest in a sports bra if you don't already have one. My Zumba instructor often starts the class with a question "So, is everyone wearing a sports bra today?" (we rarely get guys to participate in the class).

Zumba Capris, cargo pants, and shorts

Although some of the other athletic clothing brands may work for you, I recommend the Zumba brand. Since these pants, capris, and shorts are made specifically for Zumba, they are more suitable for a lot of stretching and moving. Well fitting bottoms are a must-have for a zumba class - not only to stay comfortable while looking good, but also to avoid accidental wardrobe malfunction and prevent injuries.

Zumba Shoes - a few options for your budget

Zumba shoes are a little pricey but are very much worth the money to a true Zumba fan. Cute, light, comfortable shoes that fit well and are perfect for dancing and Zumba. Not ready for a big investment? Then consider the inexpensive dance socks that will help you turn any pair of sneakers into dance shoes. Dance shoes by Bloch is another good option for half the price of Zumba Fitness sneakers.

I would say that you have zumba land covered and I can certainly understand that you'll have the best success wearing the right outfit for this high intensity work out, I'm not up to that level and get exhausted just watching. I'd say start young and stay with it for a life time of better health! :)
