Who is Shane Warne?

Updated on July 28, 2013

Shane Warne - The Cricketer and Australian Larrikin

So who is Shane Warne? Well the easy response to that is that he is a cricketer who played for Australia as a spin bowler and who retired several years ago from top flight cricket, but there is actually quite a lot more that can be said in answer to who is Shane Warne.

The man himself has courted controversy throughout his adult life in the public eye as well as polarising even his most ardent supporters.

So here my answer to the question, who is Shane Warne.

Shane Warne - The Cricketer

Shane Warne was born in the Melbourne, Australia in 1969 and by the time he had turned 22 he was playing Test cricket for Australia. It was a sudden rise through the first class ranks and may explain some of his behaviours later in his career.

For almost the entire next 15 years he was rated as the premier leg spin bowler in the world. He finally retired from the Test and One Day International (ODI) arena in 2007. During his career he had held the post of team Vice Captain, had made a top score of 99 and he held the then world record for wickets at 708.

Is Shane Warne the best spin bowler ever?

Shane Warne - The Drugs

There are two drugs that have played a major part in Shane Warne life. His long term smoking addiction where his 40 cigarettes a day habit came back to haunt him when he accepted a $200,000 endorsement from the Nicorette company, who manufacture smoking replacement gum and patches and he was caught with a cigarette in his mouth during the West Indies tour.

Later there was another incident when he was photographed by two New Zealand fans smoking in a cricket ground (a non-smoking cricket ground) and he lashed out at them. Yet despite all of this he still continues to smoke!

His second drug indiscretion is more embarrassing than even the smoking incidents. The day before the start of the 2003 World Cup he failed a drugs test, testing positive for a banned diuretic. His excuse was that his mother had given him the drug so that he could shed some fluid, thus looking thinner and improving his appearance by not looking like a podgy dough boy.

After being sent home (probably to his mum) he was banned for a year by the Australian Cricket Board. She should have grounded him to his room for being so foolish, vain and giving such a lame excuse.

Shane Warne - The Philanderer

How many cricketers can say they lost the Vice Captaincy of their country, as well as any chance of ever being the Captain, because they were accused of harassing a women with relentless, sleazy text messages? One is the answer and it was Mr Warne again. Whilst his wife Simone sat at home in Australia in 2000 he was on a UK Ashes tour and the locals were not happy about his harassment of their women.

In 2005 he was accused of going further and having sexual relations with a 25yo student and a 31yo sales rep. Soon after this his long suffering wife separated from him.

During their separation he was photographed in his underpants with a couple of models, but he did eventually get back together with his wife. This lasted until 2007 when he couldn't help himself, when yet again in England, he sent a text meant for another woman to his wife. Oops.

Warne eventually found his English Rose in the shape of actress and model Liz Hurley, so you would think he was over his philandering. Nope. In 2010 he sent 100 texts to a married Australian business woman asking for more than a drink and in 2011 a porn star published details of their night of passion and the explicit texts he had sent her.

Surprisingly, Liz Hurley is now engaged to him....

Shane Warne - The Controversies

Affairs, drugs, sexting surely there can't be anymore controversies in Shane Warne's life?

In 1995 he was fined by the Australian Cricket Board for accepting money from an illegal Indian Bookmaker for giving inside information about the condition of the pitch before the game. In 1999 he was banned for two games for derogatory remarks made against the then Sri Lankan captain.

Even after his retirement from first class cricket he still courted disaster, 2013 and he is fined $4500 dollars and suspended for one game whilst playing in the Australian 'Big Bash' tournament. He both abused and man handled an opponent as well as shaping up to fight him. Mr Warne, when will you learn?

Oh and he is now an official ambassador for the 888 gambling company, completing the bookmaker sponsored dealings circle.

Shane Warne - Plastic Surgery

A Wax Man Cometh

Vanity has been an expensive vice for Shane Warne, starting with the infamous diet pill my mum gave me suspension through to his cringing appearances for a hair growth company with the annoying 'Advanced Hair, Yeah Yeah' catchphrase.

The latest bout of cringe worthiness is that he now has the facial features of a wax dummy whilst his fiance claims he has had no facial surgery or botox what so ever. His magical claim is that he looks younger thanks to finding love and losing a few pounds.

Who am I to disbelieve Shane Warne? He's been such an honest chap in the past.

Shane Warne - Liz Hurley

Having stood by Shane Warne throughout his latest relationship faux pas as well as accepting his marriage proposal, it appears Liz has taken on some of his charm. Just watch her performance below when confronted by the Australian press recently.

There is talk that they are the new king and queens of 'bogan' here in Australia, a bogan being comparable with people in the lower socio economic sphere of society who lack the basic social charms and grace, whilst revelling in that fact.

Liz Hurley joins the fray - Our new 'Bogan' queen?

What do you think of Shane Warne?

@James1978: As the son of two English immigrants I know what you mean about grudging! Though he may have been a laughing stock from the minute he started his first sexting campaign... Liz is the cherry on the cake!

Despite being an England supporter, I have a grudging respect for Shane Warne. However I think he's become a laughing stock since he's been with Liz Hurley.

@s-tippett: Good question! ;-) Oh and Howard Florey is one of the greatest Australians ever... Shame he isn't as well known as his work deserves!

I agree that Warnie was a great bowler, but as a male.... well, i think he leave alot to be desired, never much of a role model. What is Ms Hurley thinking!!! (I had to look up who Florey was!)

@deforst: Who am I to disagree! How many Australians know who Florey is?

I'm an Australian and I still think he's a disgrace! Why do we as Australians revere the people who deserve it the least!?!? I say forget Ned Kelly and celebrate Howard Florey... oh and put Warney back in the wax work museum he's escaped from!
