What are the Best Yoga Backpacks, Carriers, Mat Bags? Reviews
Yoga is an amazing exercise, but it's one that usually requires the use of a floor mat (at least if you want to be comfortable while doing it). That mat can be rolled up, but finding a way to tote it around is tricky. Yoga mat bags, yoga backpacks and carriers are great ways for you to carry your mat to and from class in a stylish and simple way. There are so many available today it can be hard to narrow down the choices.
There are hundreds of yoga mat bags and carriers available out there today. Most of them are pretty simple, but there are some items with great features. Finding a bag that meets the bill of being affordable, useful and environmentally friendly is tough to balance. It has to make your life a little easier, it has to look good, and it can't have a negative ecological impact.
This article will take a look at some of my favorite yoga backpacks, yoga mat bags and mat holder carriers that are available today. I hope to narrow down some of your options and present a few of my favorites that are available online today. I will look at a handful of the best yoga mat bags and backpacks out there, giving a short review of each one. Before that, I'll talk a bit about yoga backpacks and shoulder tote bags and why you might choose one over the other.
Different Types of Yoga Mat Bags: - Yoga Backpacks, Carriers, Totes and Many More Options...
There are some different types of yoga mat bags on the market today, and they're all a bit different from one another. Before we get into specific products that I like and recommend, I wanted to touch briefly on each general category of bag so you have an idea what might suit you best.
- Yoga Mat Bags & Totes:
The most simple yoga mat bags are those that incorporate a simple strap and holder system. They'll often be a simple, low profile bag that's just large enough for a rolled up yoga mat to fit inside. Some will come with a zipper that runs lengthwise, others will have a drawstring at the top. These are often available in fun colors and can be pretty personalized. They don't have much room for extra storage, however.
- Yoga Mat Backpacks:
Yoga backpacks are exactly as they sound. They have a space that's meant for the rolled up yoga mat, but they also have a lot of other compartments for your stuff. This is useful if you're going to class after work, or if you need to cycle to your class, carry an extra set of clothes, or just need more storage in general. Available in one shoulder or two, yoga backpacks are super practical and again come in lots of colors and styles.
- Yoga Carrier Bags:
These are sort of a hybrid between the two styles. They are larger, more spacious bags that can carry your rolled up yoga mat along with a few other items. They are easy to use and not bulky, and they'll often just have one large compartment for your mat and towel and clothing. It's a nice compromise between the two styles. Yoga mat carriers often come with a shoulder strap instead of simple handles.
Aurorae Sling Backpack: One of the best yoga bags around.
A multi-use yoga mat backpack from Aurorae
Aurorae is one of my favourite producers of yoga products, and this bag is really great. It's got a nice feature in that it stores the yoga mat itself outside of the pack, so your other gear won't come in contact with it.
The mat fits snugly in a mesh holder with velcro straps to hold it firmly in place. It's a sling yoga backpack so it rides comfortably over one shoulder. There are two central compartments with a lot of storage, and a smaller front zippered compartment.
It even has a cell phone pocket! It's just as good for hiking as for going to class, so it's definitely one of my faves.
Sisyama: A top quality yoga duffel bag carrier
Easy, convenient and stylish yoga mat carrier / duffel
This is a really stylish and practical yoga mat bag that has a lot of upside. First off, it is a very affordable yoga mat carrier bag with water resistance, so rain is easily taken care of.
Secondly, it has all the benefits of a small duffel bag, and it provides ample storage with an easy zip enclosure. There is a decent sized interior compartment, with plenty of room for your water bottle, clothing and personal items.
The mat itself is held firmly by fasterner straps to the side, and it keeps your stuff separated from the mat, which is a nice touch. It's a top yoga mat backpack / duffel bag that's worth your consideration.
MatPak: A simple and great yoga mat bag sling
Simple and convenient, the MatPak is a cheap option
The MatPak is an extremely popular mat bag choice, and it's one of the most versatile options available. It's simple and low profile, providing a space for your mat that's enclosed with a zipper.
It's sized to fit even the largest yoga mats, so sizing won't be an issue. It also has a lot of smaller compartments, perfect for holding your yoga mat towel, cell phone and keys, water bottle, things like that.
A nice feature is that it's made from recycled water bottles, and it's water-resistant to boot. You can use it as a yoga mat backpack or a sling carrier, it has two straps to choose from.
Manduka MatSak: Simple, recycled yoga mat bag
An eco-friendly and practical yoga mat carrier with top reviews
The Manduka MatSak is a super simple and bare bones yoga mat bag that's designed really practically. It has ventilation so your towel and mat can air out as you head home, meaning it'll stay fresher. I
t's made from natural cotton canvas material that's durable and attractive, and the metal hardware, grommets and PET plastic components are meant to last a long time. The plastic in this item is recycled.
The shoulder strap makes this more like a yoga mat backpack sling, and it's adjustable and comfy to tote around.
Other affordable yoga mat bags and backpacks to choose from:
Here are a few lower priced options. I generally don't recommend cheap yoga mat bags as a rule. They tend to tear and wear out after a short time, so it's better to invest well and get a long lasting item. That said, I know that everyone's budget is different, and these ones may last a long time with careful use.
