Steampunk Costumes For Women

Updated on March 20, 2019

Costumes And Accessories For Women

Steampunk Costumes for women cover a wide and diverse range of styles. If you are as fascinated with this style of dress as I am, then you will enjoy the photos and links that I've gathered to help you achieve your unique statement.

I've been fascinated with this genre of Gothic design since probably the mid '90s. At first I was more aware of the artistic side of this movement and then began to realize there was a whole fashion side as well.

Apparently, there aren't any hard rules to adhere to when affecting this look and creating your costume. There are however certain iconic symbols that set this style apart from the rest.

This style of dressing is a mixture of the Victorian era and the Modern. I find it interesting that one can take pretty much any character from history, whether real or imagined, and give them a Steampunk look.

Whether you want to dress in this manner for a night out on the town or you are heading to a Halloween Costume party, read on to be inspired to create your attire as I share many resources for pulling it all together.

Satin and Lace - Layers and Layers of Lace

A few things I have noticed that are pretty consistent in this style of fashion for women is the use of satin and lace.

It seems the Steampunk ensemble is just not complete unless it at least includes lace on some part of the body. Whether the lace is part of the hat, collar, worn at the wrists, as gloves, or trim on a parasol, it all looks great to me!

Some of the costumes for women will present layers and layers of lace as in the photo above.

I love this aspect of the Steampunk clothing style for women and feel that no matter how harsh the rest of the outfit may be, satin and lace manage to soften it a bit.

Personally, I feel that combining leather and lace would definitely take the outfit up a whole other notch!

Feathers And Beads - Women's Victorian Fashion

More popular symbols for Women's Steampunk fashion are feathers and beads. These items also help to soften the costume and give it a very feminine appeal.

Feathers are very popular in hats, jewelry, as part of the dress design and more. Beads of course are draped pretty much all over the costume from the head on down.

I feel the combination of feathers and beads are very lovely together in these Victorian style designs.

Beautiful Glorious Hats - Costume Images

One of the accessories that helps to complete many of the women's Steampunk style costumes is the use of hats. Many of the hats used in this style are very small while others are a bit larger. None of them seem to be overly large however.

I love when a woman can pull off wearing a hat as I feel it can look very elegant and chic. Of course your hat can have feathers in it as does this lady to compliment your costume clothing.

Corsets and Lace - Costume Images

Another symbol of Steampunk Women's Clothing is adding a corset to the ensemble. Somehow adding a corset manages to work with this style and I like that. I can't imagine having to wear a corset everyday but for an evening, I might consider it.

I love how this lady pulls several of the iconic Steampunk Symbols for Women's Costumes all together in one. She has satin, loads of lace, the tiny hat, and of course the lovely corset to complete her attire. Very lovely!

Of course, she has the 'saucy attitude' to pull it off as well.

Make Your Own Costumes and Accessories - How-To Videos

If you are the crafty and creative type, consider making your own costume or at least some of the accessories that go along with it. You don't have to spend tons of money as these crafty people have demonstrated to create an awesome Steampunk theme. Click any video to watch!

Very similar to Shrinky Dinks plastic.

If you just want a few touches of hardware for your head, bobby pins might be the answer.

Goggles are an important part of many Steampunk costume themes.

Now you can make your own small cute top hat.

Spats are another popular accessory for Steampunk costumes.

Victorian and Futuristic Inspired Costumes

The Victorian look is very much an inspiration for Steampunk costumes. Consider researching some old vintage photographs to get inspired. Apparently if you take a lady's day dress, add some metal adornments to it, wear some wicked heels, put some goggles with the hat and you are good to go!

Sexy Stockings - Accessories

Whether the stockings are fishnet, striped, ripped or what have you, wearing some sort of stylish stockings seems to help enhance the Steampunk Costume experience.

Many of the costumes will have very long sections in the back and then be short or cropped in the front to better display their layers of ruffles and stockings.

Some of these women's costumes seem to make it a requirement that you slash up a perfectly good pair of stockings before your ensemble is complete.

They all manage to make it work somehow and that's what it's all about!

Stockings and Spats - Wicked Costume Accessories

Of course your costume just isn't pulled together completely unless you have a special pair of stockings or spats. Consider a pair of striped thigh-high stockings, torn fishnet stockings, or just some plain black stockings to complete your look.

Torn fishnets add to the Bad Girl image costume.

Gothic Jewelry

Of course you must have some kind of Victorian and Gothic inspired Jewelry to complete your Costume! I love the look of the industrial gears style of jewelry as in the necklace above. It's just so different and unique and it really draws me. I have a feeling it's the abstractness of it that appeals to me.

To complete your attire, jewelry with lace, metal, ribbon, satin, gears, feathers, or trim will probably compliment your ensemble perfectly. Like I said before, there are no hard and fast rules with this style of fashion design.

Any jewelry that you can put together that contains gears, cogs, wheels, dragon flies, compasses, old watches and anything else metal will make wonderful accessories.

If you are drawn to it, try it with your outfit and see if it works!

Of course every Steampunk Lady has to have the perfect shoes to finish off her costume.

Shoes can range from flats to stiletto boots and with metal as adornment or without.

There is a lot of room for experimentation and if you have a pair of Victorian looking shoes, so much the better!
