10 Variations on How to Wear the Leather Bomber Jacket

Updated on November 10, 2016

The leather bomber jacket wasn't originally created to be a stylish item. It was created as a functional item for military personnel to wear. Originally designed in the 1920s, it was strictly a piece of military clothing when it first arrived. However, it didn't take too long before people in normal society took an interest in the style of the bomber jacket. Today you can find people wearing everything from vintage leather bomber jackets originally used by those old military men to designer brand jackets inspired by the leather bomber jacket style. There are leather bomber jackets for both men and women. Women tend to prefer those designed just for them since they have more shape to them that suits the female body but some women do feel comfortable and cozy in a men's leather bomber jacket. Below you'll find examples of ten different variations on this popular type of jacket.

1. Traditional Leather Bomber Jacket

This is what a basic traditional leather bomber jacket looks like. It has the general military style and shape. It's based on the colors of the military bomber jackets. It has patches and memorabilia that refer to the use of these jackets by the military. People who are seeking to find a leather bomber jacket that represents the true style that these jackets were originally intended to represent are looking for something like that. These jackets are generally only found in men's styles but women can wear them, too, of course.

2. Common Variation on the Traditional Leather Bomber Jacket

A lot of people are looking for the basic shape of the traditional leather bomber jacket but they don't want one that screams "military" quite as much as that traditional style does. This type of jacket is a common variation. The black collar makes it a more understated jacket and the lack of memorabilia on the jacket erases the military essence of the jacket. Nevertheless, this design and style definitely derives directly from that original traditional style of the leather bomber jacket first created for the military.

3. Common Variation Cut for Women

This is the same basic jacket that we looked at in the last image. It has a design that is definitely based on the originally military style but it doesn't have the military patches or any other overdone patriotic stuff on it. The difference between this one and the last one is that this one is specifically cut to the shape of a woman. It retains the same general shape as the men's leather bomber jacket but it's styled so that it flatters the shape of a woman. A few nips here and tucks there, a change in the pockets and you go from an unflattering men's style to a great traditional women's leather bomber jacket.

4. Fashion Fit Women's Leather Bomber Jacket

Compare this cut to the last one. What you'll see is that there are a lot of similarities but the shape of this jacket isn't the same as the other one. Although it's inspired by the traditional leather bomber jacket, this one is designed more with women's fashion in mind rather than with an eye towards keeping those traditional shape and details that were originally seen in the military jackets. The fact that this jacket is cropped further shoes that it is meant more for fashion than for function since it's not going to keep you nearly as warm as the longer bomber jacket would.

5. Edgier Women's Leather Bomber Jacket

Here we've got an even more fashion-focused leather bomber jacket that strays even further away from that traditional cut and style of the military leather bomber jacket. This one is a bit avant garde in its design and definitely edgy. It's for the woman who knows what a great leather bomber jacket is supposed to look like but who really wants to take things to the next level in terms of her outerwear fashion. This type of leather bomber jacket is intended for younger women.

6. Hooded Women's Leather Bomber Jacket

How can a designer keep a leather bomber jacket interesting when so many other designers have already approached this type of jacket in the past? One way is to add something different to the jacket that isn't seen often on this type of style. In this case, we can see that the designer added a modern hoodie-style hood to the women's leather bomber jacket. This creates an entirely new look that would appeal to a woman who kind of liked the regular leather bomber jacket but also wanted something a little bit different. I can see a lot of women liking this particular style. What do you think?

7. Colored Leather Bomber Jacket

Another easy way to change up the usual leather bomber jacket is to get away from the traditional colors that are used for this design. Because it's originally a military jacket, it's almost always seen in brown, black or dark green. If you want to get something different then look for a leather bomber jacket that is made with lighter or brighter colors. This one is a cropped leather bomber jacket that's definitely fit for a woman and it doesn't have the big collar that most of them have so that gives it another feminine touch.

8. Red Leather Bomber Jacket

Of all of the great colors that you could choose for a unique leather bomber jacket, the best one is a red one. There are some that come in bright red, of course, but the stylish woman would probably choose a darker brick-like or maroon red. This is a bold color that isn't garish. It says that you're stylish and confident and not afraid to let people see you coming from a mile away. It's not as easy to find a red leather bomber jacket as it is to find one in a more traditional color and it's probably going to cost you a little bit more to buy this product but it's a great addition to almost any wardrobe. It's really a statement piece.

9. Embellished Leather Bomber Jacket

Yet another great way to make your leather bomber jacket a unique and feminine one is to get one that is embellished. (Of course, if you've got the DIY mindset then you can just embellish your own leather bomber jacket.) The studded leather bomber jacket is a really popular type that is fairly easy to find if you're shopping online. You can also get other types of embellishment such as jackets with Swarovski crystal designs or jackets that have jewels sewn on to them.

10. Short Sleeves on a Leather Bomber Jacket

It's not easy to find a leather bomber jacket that has short sleeves. However, you can find jackets that have three quarter sleeves or sleeves that are otherwise unique. This one is from DKNY and it's clear that it's a designer leather bomber jacket that's intended to be fashion-forward. I like the way that it's shown with a cute little outfit since people often think of these jackets as only being part of a rough and tough look.

I love leather jackets, but I have never tried to "bomber" style per se. I must say that I love the colored bomber jacket. That nude color is gorgeous yet simple.

Love the bomber jacket ideas. These are also more durable as compared to fabric ones. I think it is due to the leather skin.

Thanks, Kathryn for yet another great hub. I had no idea that there are so many different kinds of bomber jackets in the open market. Us guys are limited when it comes to clothing (without looking too metrosexual that is).
