10 Tips for Lovely Healthy Locks

Updated on January 10, 2013

How to keep your hair in tip-top condition for silkiness and shine?

Lovely, long tresses are any girl's best assets. But they don't come without effort, care and attention given to them. Wondering how to get shiny, thick hair that would make many gals envious of your beautiful mane?

Let's have a look at some tips for helping you have the most breathtaking locks in the neighborhood.

Tip 1: Shampoo with Care

Just smudging a lot of shampoo on your hair is never a good idea. Too much of the soapy product can cause your scalp to become dry. And too less of it can lead to excess oiling and a shoddy look. So shampoo your hair every two days and not daily, using only enough quantity to cleanse it properly.

Tip 2: Protect it from Heat Styling Tools

Straighteners, blow-dryers, curling irons, etc. have become a necessity in any girl's cupboard. But too much of heat can leave your hair looking dry and damaged. So always use a heat protecting hair product before exposing your hair to heat.

Tip 3: Never Style it when Wet

Hair is weakest when it is wet, and that's why combing or brushing it immediately after a wash is not recommended at all. Even when you have to style it, blot-dry it with a towel, and make sure it's 80-90 percent dry before you start your styling regimen.

Tip 4: Protect it from the Sun too

Just like your skin, your hair needs to be protected from the harmful rays of the sun. Use shampoos and conditioners that offer UVA and UVB protection. When going out, wearing a large-brimmed hat to protect your head as much as possible from the bright, shiny sun.

Tip 5: Don't forget to trim

To prevent split-ends and unnecessary hair breakage, make sure you get a trimming every 6-8 weeks. This is particularly important if you tend to straighten your hair a lot.

Tip 6: Avoid very Tight Hair Styles

Whether it's a tight braid, or a tight pony tail; the tugging and pulling is far from healthy for the hair. So let it loose and let it down as often as you can.

Tip 7: Beware of Ammonia

Many hair straightening creams and hair dyes come with this hair-damaging chemical. For your convenience, ammonia-free dyes are now available in markets, and you should particularly check for this when buying a hair dye.

Tip 8: Eat Well

Just like your skin, your hair needs good care from the inside too. Therefore, what you eat matters a lot. Salmon, walnuts, eggs, spinach, lentils, yogurt and poultry are some great choices.

Tip 9: Deep Condition

Treat your hair with a moisturizing deep conditioner once a week. Each product has a different deep-conditioning schedule, while the process usually takes 10-15 minutes.

Tip 10: Love your Hair as it is

What this means is not to straighten and style it too much, and flaunt your natural tresses as much as you can!

With these hair tips, nothing can stop you from becoming a gorgeous diva!
