5 Things Every Man in His 20s Should Own

Updated on January 3, 2013

Must Have Apparel for Men in Their 20s

Let's face it, most men just don't have the fashion sense that women do. Maybe they are content to choose comfort over style or perhaps it's just an effort to save money? I tried to avoid saying it but based on a few of my recent public outings, I think a lot of men just don't have a clue when it comes to stuff like that. Here's where the style savior (otherwise known as a woman) comes in.

It's time to rescue all of you guys out there from wardrobe mediocrity and get you looking your best. Because fashion trends are largely based on age groups, I'm going to break this down into a series of articles covering a few different age ranges starting with the 20s. Here are a few things that every man falling into that age group should own at least one of. My goal is to have you looking great when you go out without having to replace your entire wardrobe.

Looking great doesn't have to require spending a ton of money but it does mean investing in a least a few quality staple items you can use as a foundation for the rest of your wardrobe. Sometimes it is better to own one really nice item than five sloppy looking ones!

A Great Pair of Jeans

Every man should own at least one great looking pair of jeans. Not the ones that you wear to work out in the yard or clean the garage in but a high quality pair of jeans that you can wear for a variety of occasions. It's fine to own a dozen pair of Levi's or Wranglers but if you want to command respect when you go out and stand out from the rest of the guys out there, you're going to need something a little more stylish than that.

Fortunately, there are plenty of options out there! The brand you select will depend on your body type and price range. For someone who likes a looser fitting pair of jeans, I recommend Big Star. You can find them at mall stores like Buckle and most major department stores for around $100-$125. They offer a casual fit, several unique and trendy washes, and an upgraded look that you won't get from your cheap everyday jeans. If you don't mind spending a little more money, you can get a great look from jeans by Rock Revival, True Religion, MEK, and Rock and Republic.

A Hugo Boss Shirt

There is just something classy about a men's button down Hugo Boss shirt. It's very difficult to wear one of these and not look clear, confident, and professional. These shirts go well with everything from a nice pair of jeans to dress pants and are perfect for date night or going out to have a nice dinner with friends.

You can wear them tucked in with dress pants for a more dressy look or left untucked for a more casual and relaxed outing. Either way, this will send a message to the women out there that you have a great sense of style and value your appearance.

Both are extremely attractive qualities in my book! You can find these at most major department stores including Nordstrom, Macy's, and several others. They usually retail for between about $65 and $125 depending on the style.

An Attractive Watch

There's nothing wrong with that Timex or the digital sports watch with the rubber band however you should own at least one watch that says something other than, "I like digital gadgets!" This doesn't mean you have to break the bank and sport a Rolex or something exotic but owning a watch that shows you can actually tell time without it being displayed for you in LED light is a must.

One affordable option is the Citizen Eco-Drive Chronograph watch. It offers a subtle and sophisticated look without sacrificing functionality. Other good choices include the Invicta Men's Pro Divers watch which gives a bold masculine look with a stainless steel band and offers the appearance of luxury without the high price tag.

In fact, you should be able to find it for less than $90! If you are still struggling with the idea of giving up that sports watch, consider the Invicta Men's Russian Diver Collection watch. This watch lets to hang on to that sporty feel while accompanying it with a modern and powerful looking timepiece.

A Stylish T-Shirt

Face it guys, it's time for that boring plain solid color t-shirt to go! You don't have to be in the UFC to wear a t-shirt that says you're not afraid to wear something with a design that's a little more complex than a beer label. I think I can speak for all women here when I say we've all seen the plain t-shirt thing! Let's try wearing something a little more fun that shows your confidence and willingness to set the trend.

There are several unique brands out there that will give you a modern and fun feel along with a fresh and trendy look. It's fine to own a few plain solid colored shirts and wear them once in a while but there is definitely something to be said for a shirt made from a nice soft fabric with some design to it. Whether we admit it or not, most women have a soft spot for the bad boy rocker look.

A Good Cologne

Your scent says a lot about you and there are few things more attractive to me than a man who smells great. Here are a few good fragrance choices for a variety of occasions:

1. Curve for Men by Liz Claiborne

This is a good all-purpose fragrance with a fresh and spicy scent.

2. Chrome by Azzaro

This one is perfect for when you are looking for a nice cool crisp fragrance that has that fresh out of the shower scent. Subtle and not too overwhelming, this one is very fresh, clean, and versatile. You could wear this to work or for a night out and it would suit both just fine.

3. Hugo Boss for Men

This one carries a youthful yet professional fragrance that sends the message of timeless style. Great for a nightclub or evening out with friends.

Your New Look

This list is by no means complete and there are plenty of other things you can do to upgrade your look but this should get you off to a good start. By building a solid foundation of staple items, you may find that you are willing to take a few more fashion chances than you thought.

You might be surprised at just how quickly you can transform from over-conservative boredom to the next Men's Health cover model. OK, well maybe not but at least you can have fun trying and probably earn a few compliments from your significant other along the way!

I agree. A lot of guys have no clue what they are doing when it comes to style. Decent tips. Hugo boss is definitley good. I also think a nice pair of dress shoes is a must have as well. Ones that can go with jeans and dress pants.

Great Hub! I am with you on the Hugo Boss shirt. It's so classy. However, I personally really hate affliction t-shirts so that's a no-go for my bf =)
