How to Create a 50s Hairdo - from Flips to Ponytails

Updated on December 21, 2012

1950s Hairstyle for Bobby Soxers

Are you putting on Bye Bye Birdie or Grease? Maybe you're going to a 50's hop and need to look the part. It's easy to create a ponytail or flip hairstyle that will compliment your 50's poodle skirt or outfit.

Open any high school yearbook from the 1950s and you'll see the popular hairstyles included cute Pixie Cuts, carefree Ponytails and piled high Bouffants. Short and curly hair was in (see I Love Lucy) . Here are some ideas and resources that will help you recreate the 50's look.

Hair Do Slang

Learn the lingo for the coolest hairdo's

Bob - a short curly hairstyle

Bouffant - a woman's hair style in which the hair is teased to give an overall puffed-out appearance and often combed to frame the face.

B 52 - The beehive is a woman's hairstyle that resembles a beehive. It is also known as the B-52, for its similarity to the bulbous nose of the B-52 Stratofortress bomber

DA (Duck Butt) - greased hair piled high on top and swept back at the sides to form a ridge or seam at the back

Flat Top - A flattop is a type of very short hairstyle similar to the crew cut, with the exception that the hair on the top of the head is deliberately styled to stand up.

Flip - a flip hairdo was hip. Shoulder-length hair was backcombed slightly at the top and then curled out at the ends.

Fringe - a border of hair that is cut short and hangs across the forehead

Jelly Roll - hair is combed up and forward on the sides, to roll it together at the top of the head. This left a single large curl in the middle of the forehead

Marcel - a hairdo characterized by deep regular waves that are made by a heated curling iron

Pompadour - a hair style in which the front hair is swept up from the forehead

Rat - a pad (usually made of hair) worn as part of a woman's coiffure. It's used under a section of teased hair to give height to the hair do.
