Human Barbies

Updated on June 19, 2013

Real Human Dolls

Human Barbies refer to girls that look like Barbie dolls either through physicall modification or through the use of make-up. Life-size dolls seem to come to life like Valeria Lukyanova. Valeria dubbed as the human Barbie, claims to be the most popular online sensation in Russian-language internet due to her likeness to the Mattel character which has become childhood staple of millions of young girls across the world.

Another doll-looking human is Venus Angelic, a 15-year-old girl from London who plays dress up as a cute porcelain-looking doll complete with all the accessories. She perfects the part to a T. Venus loves dolls and anime.

Then there is Dakota Rose aka Dakotakoti to her online fans. She gained notoriety again with her unbelievably doll-like features. Dakotakoti maintains a YouTube account with make-up tutorials on how to achieve her unique looks. She is also an active cosplayer.

The human Barbies attracted both admirers and haters when they became overnight internet sensations. To the critics, the obsession only serves to mislead young girls as these dolls present an image of women that is far removed from reality.

Is cosplay to blame?

Human Barbies often embody fictional characters by the use of make-up, custom-made outfits and for some extremes, the lifestyle itself. Mostly girls, all seem to have an active involvement in cosplay, a performance art popularized by anime shows which originated from Japan. The cosplay community has increased and the members invest a lot of time, effort and money to get into characters that they choose.

Is it mere coincidence that the female characters in cosplay often have similar doll-like features as these human Barbies? And so, it might be too harsh to easily judge these women. Obviously, cosplaying is not yet known in some parts and it is understandable why some sectors may not fully understand it. People who are active in the cosplay community find great satisfaction in portraying a character.

Valeria Lukyanova, who by the way is a singer in new age genre, the motivation to cultivate the image as a human Barbie may be varied. From her Facebook page, she promotes a philosophy all her own and mindless of the criticism her image has spun. She radiates a peaceful aura, a rarity considering that she is being 'poked' here and there for her unconventional ways. She never seems to mind that people are speculating whether or not she underwent drastic procedures to get her Barbie looks.

It is possible that Valeria Lukyanova as an artist seeks to promote her own brand of philosophy and art in an unconventional way. She has created her own niche and came up with a neat package of seemingly unachievable physical perfection. This is no so different from the strategy that most Hollywood celebrities do. Or perhaps it is alright to give her credit for trying to achieve something which seems impossible for any average woman.

The human barbies may simply be expressing themselves in a different way but no one can argue that it is their free choice to look like that and it is not for anyone to judge them no matter how odd it may appear to others. After all, the reason behind the preoccupation may simply be what little girls feel when they play with their beautiful dolls -- fun and play!

I share the fascination. I am also intrigued with these personalities. But becoming homeless just to look like one, that is extreme! Thanks for sharing that info. :)

I have never heard for this. Very interesting. I believe that beauty should be cherished, but this is very unusual way to do that. But if that's their lifestyle, that's probably ok... I shared this...

Anyway, human dolls are not real human. Get rid of the dolls and connect with your family and friends.
