Beautiful Black Nail Polishes: A List of Shades and Brands

Updated on November 20, 2015
Source

Black matches with everything and is always in style. Nail polish is no exception. It's incredibly versatile and can add style to any outfit.

Black nail polish can be exotic, sexy, vampy, dramatic, or classy. You can choose to wear it alone or, for example, as a base coat for other polishes such as glitters, or use it for making various nail art designs.

It can be difficult to choose the perfect color nail polish when there are so many shades of the same color to choose from. There are a lot of black or near black nail polishes out there. Some are very inexpensive and some are costly. Check out this list of black nail polishes and compare them so you can choose the perfect black shade for yourself. This list contains some of the more popular shades and brands of black polish.

OPI Black Onyx
OPI Black Onyx | Source

OPI Black Onyx

OPI Black Onyx is a deep, rich black creme polish with a super shiny finish. Most people rated this polish very highly while some others claim that it was difficult to apply and chipped earlier than most OPI nail polishes. A base coat and top coat would probably help with making it last longer and keeping it a bit more chip-resistant. It's good to use top coats and base coats anyway.

This is probably one of the most popular of all black nail polishes on the market.

OPI Black Satin

OPI Black Satin

OPI Black Satin is a lighter toned black polish with lots of silver micro shimmer. The silver micro shimmer gives this polish a charcoal-cobalt colored appearance.

If you're not a fan of the ultra black, vampy polishes but still enjoy darker shades you may like this one. It's super sophisticated, sexy, and dramatic. Plus, it goes with pretty much any outfit. Wearing any black nail polish will surely get you noticed but the texture of this one really stands out.

OPI I Only Date Werewolves

OPI I Only Date Werewolves

OPI I Only Date Werewolves is part of OPI's Spookettes Collection which contains three other Halloween themed colors, an orange, a white, and a glow in the dark polish. The Spookettes collection is such a cute little set of polishes in the perfect Halloween colors.

I Only Date Werewolves is the perfect black creme polish. It's essentially OPI's Black Onyx but with a different name.

OPI Sephora What's a Tire Jack? (glossy)
OPI Sephora What's a Tire Jack? (glossy)
OPI Sephora What's a Tire Jack? (matte)
OPI Sephora What's a Tire Jack? (matte)

OPI for Sephora What's a Tire, Jack?

OPI for Sephora What's a Tire, Jack? comes in both a matte and a glossy finish polish. Both are very black except that one is a shiny creme nail polish and the other dries matte (not shiny). Both go very well together.

They're both really nice finishes but they look strikingly different. Both the matte and the glossy finish are great in their own way. It's hard to pick a favorite.

OPI Iron Butterfly
OPI Iron Butterfly

Orly Iron Butterfly

Orly Iron Butterfly is a jet black polish with tons of silver micro glitter. Somewhat similar to OPI's Black Satin except that it dries as a matte finish.

It seems that matte is a popular finish when it comes to black polishes. The glossy cream finishes are always beautiful but they're not for everyone. Even people that don't like the shiny black finish might still love the matte black.

Orly Liquid Vinyl

Orly Liquid Vinyl

Orly Liquid Vinyl is a very deep, rich, dark black creme polish that dries to a super glossy shine. Liquid Vinyl was rated very well with most users claiming that one coat of this polish is fine and it dries very fast as well.

Zoya Dovima

Zoya Dovima

Zoya Dovima is a black shimmer polish that dries to a matte finish. Dovima contains lots of silver micro glitter which gives it a charcoal-cobalt toned look and makes it less of a dark, jet, black like some other black polishes.

Essie Licorice

Essie Licorice

Essie Licorice is a super shiny, ultra black creme nail polish. Essie Licorice is one of the most popular black nail polishes available. Essie is a great brand and makes beautiful shades so it's not surprise that nail polish junkies love this one.

China Glaze Liquid Leather

China Glaze Liquid Leather

China Glaze Liquid Leather is another super shiny black nail polish. It's a very rich and dark shade of black. If you're a China Glaze fan (why wouldn't you be?) you'll enjoy this polish. Some users say that the formula is slightly streaky while others say that you only need a coat or two.

China Glaze Cosmic Black

China Glaze Cosmic Black

China Glaze Cosmic Black is a deep, dark, rich black jelly polish with tons of small silver and multicolored holographic glitter. Definitely the perfect color to represent the cosmos. This beautiful polish is very black and also very shiny and glittery.

China Glaze Black Diamond

China Glaze Black Diamond

China Glaze Black Diamond is a lighter toned black shimmer polish with tons of silver micro glitter. The pearl toned finish and micro glitter make this polish appear more towards the cobalt-charcoal shade than a deep, rich black shade. This is a more toned down black shimmer polish compared to some of the others.

Lancome Piha Black
Lancome Piha Black | Source

Lancome Piha Black

Lancome Piha Black is a LancĂ´me Le Vernis polish with a black base and lots of faint micro glitter. The micro glitter is definitely there but much more faint than most of the other black shimmer polishes. Lancome tends to be on the pricier end for cosmetics and nail polishes but their formula is technologically advanced and made to reduce chipping and cracking.

Wet n' Wild Black Creme
Wet n' Wild Black Creme | Source

Wet 'n' Wild Black Creme

Wet 'n' Wild Black Creme is a black creme nail polish (clearly stated in the name). The Wet 'n' Wild brand is affordable for most people with the price for a bottle of nail polish at around $1. Although it may not be the best of the best quality or chip slightly sooner than some more expensive polish brands, most users say the color, formula, and price make this polish great.

Rimmel Black Cab
Rimmel Black Cab | Source

Rimmel Black Cab

Rimmel Black Cab is another super shiny deep, dark black creme polish. It's a great shade of black and leaves a nice shiny finish but some users claim that multiple coats are needed to obtain a good opaque finish and, even though the bottle claims that it is long-lasting, some claim that it chips fairly easy. This might be helped with a base coat or top coat. Rimmel Black Cab is a relatively inexpensive polish, though not as inexpensive as Wet 'n' Wild.

There are a lot of black shades. Most are pretty similar but it's amazing how many there are. I love black nail polish on a lot of people even though I don't think it suits myself all that much.

It's not for everyone and a little shocking to some people because of how dark it is.

I didn't realize there were so many shades of black nail polish. I haven't painted my nails black for a while, but this makes me want to again.

I saw a polish that is a clear coat and turns "any polish matte." I cannot remember the name of it but I'll try to find out. I saw a sample of it and it looked really cool. Completely turned a glossy polish to matte where it was applied. I'm like you - a nail polish lover. Although I loved them when I was younger then took a break for several years, and now the addiction is back haha.

I'll have to get my hands on some of that; I am a nail polish lover. I own dozens of bottles, and they usually dry out before I have the chance to use them all up. A clear, glossy top-coat may create that effect, as well.

The matte is really cool. A really pretty combo that I've seen is when it's paired with black glossy tips.
