Best Clarifying Shampoo For Over Worked Hair

Updated on February 18, 2013

Of the many questions I've been asked over the years - one is what is clarifying shampoo?. The simple answer is this: it's a deep cleansing shampoo, one that should be used once a week at best, and once every two weeks if you have dry hair.

Clarifying means to make clear, and that's exactly what these shampoos do. They strip the hair of built up debris caused by the use of hair styling products - gel, sprays, conditioners, daily shampoos and so on.

Hopefully I've provided you with a straightforward explanation of what this type of shampoo is - so now I can review and recommend the five best clarifying shampoos on the market. They're all great for deep cleaning your hair, removing unwanted grime and hair product build-up - helping to to take care of your hair.

Pantene Pro-V Clarifying Shampoo

This is the best clarifying shampoo overall. Pantene are known for their excellence in delivering top quality hair products, year in, year out. For those interested this is not an sls free shampoo, so as long as you know - we've got that out of the way!

Pantene state that you can use this daily - I'm stating 'no you don't'. Buy this one for what it does - thoroughly cleansing all the built-up dirt and grime from your hair, once a week. The rest of the time use your normal shampoo. The only users that can and will get away with using this more often are those that suffer from oily hair. Otherwise - it will leave your hair squeaky clean, revitalized and ready for another round of hair gels, sprays and whatever else you throw at it!

Frederic Fekkai Apple Cider Clarifying Shampoo

This is a big favorite - and it's especially loved by those that suffer from excessive oils in their scalp. Again - if you have normal hair, use once a week - dry hair around once every 10 to 14 days. If you're struggling with oily hair - I'd advise you (without actually looking at your hair) to use it every two to three days.

It will cleanse your hair, remove all traces of hair products and chemicals associated with gels and so on, as well as (using it correctly) leave your hair feeling incredibly refreshed and revitalized. Builds up to a luxurious lather so a single wash, foam up, massage and rinse will do. Expect great results - you'll get them.

Nexxus Aloe Rid Gentle Clarifying Shampoo

Although this clarifying shampoo is used in many hair salons - and does do a great job of cleansing the hair - I'm not so sure this is as good as the previous product. There have been a few complaints that the new formula doesn't meet with the standard of the old one but that may well be due to the fact that folks sometimes get used to how a product works for their hair type.

All the same - it can and will remove chlorine, build-up from hair products and leave your hair fresh and vibrant. The Aloe Vera is a nice moisturizing touch and you will find that for most hair types the hair feels soft and revitalized. Good value for money too - 2 x 13.5 ounce bottles for under 25 dollars.

Suave Shampoo, Daily Clarifying

This is the best clarifying shampoo product that I recommend - partly due to the fact that it works, partly due to the price. A little over 2 bucks for a whopping 22.5 ounce bottle? Top bargain buy. Unlike Frederic Fekkai, who use cider vinegar as the active clarifying agent, Suave use citric acid.

It does the job just as well and is known for it's ability to balance the Ph in shampoos. Water and grime in the hair can lower the alkaline content and a clarifying shampoo needs to lean more into the acidic side. Don't let that scare you - acidity is good in small doses! Beyond that - this is a USA manufactured product, the bottle is recycled and you get great looking deeply cleaned hair... for very little money.

Kenra Clarifying Shampoo

Back to mid-range prices with this best selling and highly popular clarifying shampoo. This one's popular with those that swim regularly, or live in areas that use hard water. It's another once a week remedy to built-up grime and dirt that will remove anything that doesn't belong in the hair shaft.

Those with lightened or naturally blond hair may find that it will enhance their color - and for those with darker salon colored hair, it's safe and won't strip the color faster than you'd like it to. It doesn't lather up quite as richly as some of the other products featured here - but don't let that put you off. A gentle shampoo, lightly scented - and leaves hair ready for anything
