Is an Electric Rotary Shaver Right for You?

There are some major differences between rotary razors and foil razors. Rotary razors typically have three rotating cutters that lift and cut your hair while you run it over your skin.

These are typically made to bend and flex so they can more easily navigate the contours of your face.

Foil razors however, have one or two long narrow heads that move back and forth behind a very thin piece of metal which looks like a screen. This is the foil part of a "foil" razor.

Benefits to Rotary Razors

  • First of all, they tend to be much quieter than their foil counterparts.
  • They make excellent grooming products for men need that have a longer hair and a less sensitive skin. You typically can go a while between shaves.
  • Rotary razors let you shave in just about any direction - this could be side to side, up and down, or even in circular motions.

Some drawbacks to rotary razors include that they don't often get as close of a shave than foil razors.

Taking Care of Electric Rotary Shavers for Men

Are They Hard To Take Care Of?

Typically, no. The easiest way to clean a rotary razor is to remove the head and either use a small brush to remove the hair, or gently tap it out over a garbage can.

From time to time, you should remove the housing and inspect the cutters to make sure they are not clogged with hair.

It varies from model to model but some can be cleaned with running water as long as it is not plugged into the electrical outlet. There are even some models that are self-cleaning while they rest in their storage space.

Changing your razor blades will depend on the model of razor you buy, though it is generally recommended that you replace both the razor heads and the cutters once every 12 months.

If you shave a lot more frequently than the average man, or your hair is very thick of course, you may need to change these more frequently.

The cost of your rotary razor heads will vary a little depending on the brand of razor you have. They are not too much more expensive than foil razor replacements at around $30.00.

The Best Features in Electric Shavers for Men 2013

Since there are so many types of rotary razors out there that come with such a large number of features and accessories, knowing what some of the standard features are will help you decide what you might light in the razor you would like to buy.

Check to see if a particular razor will allow you to clean with running water, although all razors should come with a small brush to clean them out manually. Self-cleaning razors are a bit more expensive and come with a docking station that is filled with a cleaning solution.

When the razor is on, it uses the rotary motion to clean head with the solution. A jet cleaning system lubricates and maintains the rotary blades to keep them in good order and dries them quickly.

Flex Tracker System

If you want something that is a bit smarter, find one with a flex tracker system. These precision blades are made to track the contours of your face and the changes in the pressure to help protect your skin.

Flexing and Pivoting

Flexing and pivoting action is pretty standard with most razors. Look for reviews which will tell you just how well a particular razor moves over contours for other users. Every razor should come with some level of flexing and pivoting, but some are better than others.

Lotion Dispenser

Some more expensive razors will also dispense lotion that can soothe the face while shaving. This is a nice feature that may save you a bit of time in your morning routine.

Glide Rings

If you have a razor with a glide ring, your shaving cream or gel will stay on your face longer so you have a smoother shave.

Precision Cutting System

If a razor is advertised as having this, it includes thin heads with small slots that get a much better grip on longer hairs and can more easily catch your short stubble. They typically give a much closer shave than those without it.

LED Indicators

LED lights are nice to have on your device so you can be alerted when the cutters need to be replaced or cleaned.

I would agree. I think that paying more money really makes a huge difference in the shaver. I bought one for $50 and it broke after 2 months. So I went and got a shaver for $300 and I have been using it for 3 years. I have been more than satisfied.
