The Best Hair Color Dye for Gray Hair Coverage - Coloring Grey Hair at Home

Updated on January 19, 2014

Hair Color for Gray Hair

Choosing a hair coloring product for graying hair can be a difficult task... especially when you're coloring your hair at home instead of having it done by a salon professional.

I've been coloring my hair for the last 20 years, but once the gray hairs started popping-up the task became even more challenging! After some trial-and-error, I've finally found a few hair coloring products that give me the color that I want - beautiful color that covers the gray hairs.

Clairol Gray Busters

Clairol Gray Busters Hair Color

Clairol makes an excellent permanent hair coloring product that's specially formulated for coloring gray hair. Clairol Professional Liquicolor Gray Busters offers long lasting coverage and comes in a variety of shades. It's my #1 choice for covering gray!

Clairol Gray Buster hair color is not available at drugstores, it's available at beauty supply stores and through various online retailers. Since it's not a hair-coloring-kit, you'll need to buy the developer (20 volume), mixing bottle, and gloves separately.

The 2 ounce bottle is mixed with an equal amount of cream developer. Processing time is up to 45 minutes for resistant grays.

Tip: When choosing a shade, consider selecting one shade lighter. I usually use a dark blonde which results in an overall light brown color.

Revlon ColorSilk Hair Color

Revlon ColorSilk hair color is another one of my top picks for home hair coloring. It's widely available, and since it's a kit, everything you need is included in the box.

ColorSilk gives me predictable results with excellent gray coverage. For light brown results, I use ColorSilk Light Ash Brown (50).

Compared to other boxed hair coloring kits it's extremely inexpensive! For around $5.00 a box (often less), it's less expensive than most boxed hair coloring products. When shopping for ColorSilk online,I've noticed that has some of the lowest prices.

L'Oreal Excellence

L'Oreal Excellence

I've tried every variety of hair color from L'Oreal and have found that Excellence provides the best gray coverage. It provides 100% gray coverage and is available in a 42 different shades.

The kit comes with everything you need for coloring your hair, plus extra conditioning products. The box includes a tube of pre-coloring serum that helps protect the hair before coloring and a 1.6 ounce tube of conditioner for after coloring.

If you decide to use L'Oreal Preference (or Excellence) on a regular basis , you should sign up for their Gold Rewards Program - When you purchase 5 L'Oreal Paris Hair Coloring Products you get a coupon for a FREE box of hair color.

Clairol Natural Instincts Semi-Permanent Hair Color

Clairol Natural Instincts is an excellent choice for a semi-permanent hair color that gently blends away the grays. It works best on hair that is less than 50% gray.

The color lasts up to 28 shampoos but may wash-out sooner if you use a harsh shampoo or dandruff shampoo.

  • When choosing Clairol Natural Instincts consider a shade or two lighter than your natural hair color, especially if you have dry or damaged hair. For medium-light brown color results I use Clairol Natural Instincts Maple Cream 7.5 - Rich Dark Blonde.
  • Keep track of the time - if you leave it on longer than the recommended time your color result will likely be much darker than anticipated! I had dark brown hair after leaving the light brown hair color on for 30 minutes... oops! When this happens, I usually use a dandruff shampoo like Head and Shoulders or a clarifying shampoo because it helps lift (strip) some of the dark color out.

What is the Best Hair Color for Coloring Your Gray Hair?

Finding the perfect hair color that will cover your gray hairs can be challenging! You may have to try a few different products before you find the one that works for you!
