Best Lip Colors for Your Skin Tone

Updated on June 23, 2013

A great lip color compliments any woman’s beautiful lips and skin tone. However with so many different shades and hues available from your favorite cosmetic brands it can be difficult to find the right color that will perfectly flatter your complexion. Here are just a few tips to help make your search for the right lip color a little easier.

Light skin tones

For light skin tones, going nude is your best option. Lighter colored lipsticks in peach and pink along with nude lip glosses help to compliment fair skin. Red lipstick is also a great option for a more glamorous look. Shimmery vibrant pink shades are also a great choice for a night out on the town. You’ll want to avoid dark lipstick colors like deep chocolate or burgundy since they will contrast with your fair skin.

Olive skin tones

Almost any lip color will look great on olive toned skin. A hot lipstick color you can try is coral. Shades of warm pink or shimmery bronze will also look great. The big trend in wearing pastel hue lip color is another fun option that will look amazing on you. Steer clear of purple lip color that will make your complexion look very yellow, and also brown that can look too monochromatic on olive skin.

Medium skin tones

For medium and tan skin tones copper shades best compliment the natural warm tones in your complexion. Natural hues like nude, orange, and pink are beautiful options for a day time look. For a bold evening look brick red is a lovely option that will flatter your tan skin while not looking too over-the-top. Shades of mauve and berry that can be worn day or night are also gorgeous choices for medium skin tones. You’ll want to avoid bright red lip color that will clash too much with your skin tone.

Dark skin tones

Deep plum, chocolate, or sultry red are the best options for dark skin tones. Caramel or warm peach lip colors are great for the day time while wine colored shades look best for the evening. Orange and coral can be added into the mix for a fun pop of color. Chalky colors that contain a lot of white pigment are too contrasting and do nothing for deep skin tones.

Try to keep these tips in mind on your next trip to the makeup counter. Not only will you know what colors to avoid, but you’ll also be sure to find a lip color that plays up beautifully to your natural skin tone and will help make your lips look amazing!
