Best Places To Shop Online For Plus Sizes

BBW

Are you plus sized, queen sized, curvy, over weight, chubby or any of the other terms we use to describe big people? Well, you are not alone as over 60 percent of women in the USA are fighting the battle of the bulge. This does not mean you have to dress like a granny, wear a tent or wear black every day of you life. I have been a fashion designer for many years and many of my clients are definatly curvy and so I know, first hand how difficult it can be to find clothes that are current, flattering and affordable for a big woman. The good news is many online retailers are starting to take serious notice of this demographic and catering to you!

Go Ahead....Be Pretty!!

I am also aware many heavy women prefer to shop online in the comfort of their own home so I have scowered the internet and have come up with some awesome sites for you. But first, a few tips on how to best flatter your own figure. And remember, no matter what your size, confidence is attractive…very attractive. So don’t hide your light, stand up straight, shoulders back, wear that pretty smile and let the world know you are a proud woman.

Loose on the top and slim on the bottom.

Before I give the list of awesome online shopping sites here are a few basics for flattering your figure.

If you wear a loose fitting top, say a dolman style, wear a slim style on the bottom such as leggings, jeggings or a pencil style skirt. And if you wear a full skirt or wide legged pants, pair it with a more fitted styled top. Don’t wear a loose top with a very full skirt, that is just too much fabric for you and will end up making you look wide.

Plus Sized Leggings. Pair with a Tunic or Knee Length Dress

Where Do You Carry Your Weight?

If you carry your weight mainly on your tummy avoid belts or cinched waists, instead go for tunic style tops with a slim pant or skirt. A dress or top that falls from the bust or just below the bust is a good choice for you.

If you are heavy but still have a defined waist, do show that off with belts and clothing fitted at the waist.

Wide necklines will flatter you as they bring attention to the face.

If you are short and wide, avoid collars as they can further shorten the neck and you may resemble a turtle. Opt instead for v-necks or scoop necks and collarless jackets.

Shoulder Pads To Attach To Your Bra

Shoulder Pads Are Your Friend!

Shoulder pads are like instant weight loss. Don’t go overboard with huge pads or you will look like a football player, but an appropriate sized shoulder pad will give you a nice lift. There are many available that simply attach to your bra strap and can be worn with almost anything.

Invest in a PROPER fitting bra!

Speaking of bra’s, invest in a good one and get those girls up there where they belong! Lots of department stores and lingerie stores have people who are specially trained in bra fitting. Even if this embarrasses you, do it anyway…come on…put on your big girl panties! You can make an appointment and these women are trained to be discreet and professional. You will only have to do it once and then you will know your size and brand and can replace your bras as needed. Some of these bras can be fairly expensive but a good fitting bra will do wonders for your appearance and your clothing will be so much more flattering and you will be much more comfortable.

Necklaces and Stripes

Don’t shy away from accessories. Long chunky necklaces ands scarves will make you look taller and thinner and besides, they are so much fun! A big chunky bangle style bracelet and statement earrings are great for you. Avoid teeny-tiny delicate jewellery as they will look to small for you.

Avoid horizontal stripes or patterns; instead try to find diagonal or vertical patterns or stripes. You want to eye to move up and down, not side to side.

Not Too Big and Not Too Small

Do not wear you clothes to big! This does not camouflage anything and will only serve to make you look bigger. Remember, you are not hiding. Just as important do not wear your clothes too tight! This will also make you look bigger and you may resemble a sausage. If you have gained weight face it, and buy some clothes that fit. Clothes that are strained and gaping are never flattering.

The O Rocking her Curves

You CAN wear prints!

If you carry a lot of weight on your upper arms, avoid sleeveless tops and dresses. A dolman type sleeve or a loose short sleeve will serve you well.

Don’t believe the old wives tale that you should avoid patterns if you are heavy and only wear solid colored clothing. While big gaudy all over patterns don’t flatter anyone (even the skinny ladies) a pretty patterned top under a plain colored jacket will be lovely. Try a solid colored top with a printed bottom or vice versa.

Posture Matters

Color blocking can do wonders for you but it can also be a disaster. Look for color blocking that is vertical. Avoid clothes that have seams that run horizontally.

Stand up straight and pay attention to your posture. Your clothes will hang better and you will feel better.

Love Your High Heels!

Do wear high heels, as high as you can stand. I know, I know, they can hurt, but for a special occasion a high heeled pump with a pointy toe will make you look instantly thinner. Think of Oprah with her stiletto heels and how lovely she looks even at her heaviest, (although she freely admits to kicking them off as soon as the camera is turned off.) For everyday wear, try a comfortable lower wedge style heel. Another trick is to match your shoes to the color of your outfit and if possible even your pantyhose. Avoid square toed shoes as they can make you look heavier.

Love Your Spanx (or other body shapers)

There are many great body shapers out there and they will not only slim you, they keeps things, well…still. If you opt for one of these, be sure you try on your new clothes or potential new clothes while wearing it, as well as your new and proper fitting bra because these undergarments can change the way your clothes fit quite drastically. A body shaper can be a challenge to put on and place correctly so they don’t roll, so practise putting it on and wearing it around the house before you wear it to a special event, otherwise you may find yourself tugging at it in public, and that is not for a lovely lady like you

Here’s an idea, open that page and leave it on your computer for him to “accidentally” see, as in, hint hint honey!

Full disclosure here…Hips and Curves contacted me after this article was published and asked if I would consider including them in this article and if so, I could become an affiliate. So after looking at their site and reading lots of positive reviews on the web I accepted…what this means is if you buy something from them I will get a small commission…but hey…you, me and your man will all be happy!

Sheri, thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm only 5'2". Up until say, my forties, I was a size 2 - 4. Up until two years ago, I was a size 6. Now I'm a 12 and sometimes 14, depending on the cut. I hate my new body. My most problematic area is my belly. Even Spanx type undergarments don't hide my belly. As the result, I rarely leave the house and live in sweats. So not the Shauna that used to turn heads!

I'm bookmarking this hub and sharing. This is just what we who have "grown" need. This hub should do very well with Google. Thanx again!

Shauna, I have worked with and dresses women my whole life and believe me EVERYONE has body issues. I have learned that the most important thing of all is to love yourself and your body, no matter what. Our society is soooo hard on women. I encourage you to treat yourself to a pretty thing in two that flatters your new body, get out of the sweats, fix your hair up, put on some make-up and get out the house!! Feeling good about yourself will help with either helping you accept and love your new body, of give you self love to change it to what you want it to be. I can't tell you how many times, by helping a woman choose clothes that fit well and she felt good in has literally changed her life and her enjoyment of life. You can still turn heads!!! I know I sound preachy, but I have seen the wonders feeling attractive can do for women...and it is truly more a feeling than anything....go get your pretty on!!! If you do treat yourself and it helps you feel better I would love to hear about it. Know you are soooo not alone with your feelings about this!! Thanks so much for reading and sharing. I hope this can help many people!

Sheri, you sound like my mom. No offense - I love my mom! I do fix my hair everyday but don't wear makeup unless I meet friends for lunch, which is maybe twice a year. My mom tells me I should at least put some lipstick on everyday. Why? I didn't wear makeup when I was young because I didn't need it. When I do wear it now (and when I worked for corporate America) I only wore face powder, mascara, blush and lipstick.

Anyway, your advice is good. I love myself; I just don't love my body. I guess I'm stuck in the past and what I used to look like. At almost 57, those days are gone. I've kind of accepted that fact. I just don't know why my belly is so friggin' big!

Hey Shauna...the point isn't make up or not...it is just doing whatever you need to to feel good about yourself. Best wishes to you and thanks again.

Great hub! It really is torture to find cute clothes in any size beyond 12. I'm only a 14, but it's still almost impossible to find the right fit, to where arms or hips aren't skin tight. Two of my fave stores are Maurices and an online one I found last month called Roamans. Also, I agree with you...the more you try to feel good about yourself, the easier it will become. When we look good, we feel good!

I think it is very helpful to have a list like this of places to buy larger sizes online. The Internet has made so many options possible. I know that larger sizes are hard to find in stores and I think this page will be a great resource for many women. Voted up!

Thanks Midget, you are right! Many of my customers have found most plus sized clothes are...well...frumpy...and just because one is heavy doesn't mean they don't want to dress smart!

Looks like you've read my body shape perfectly! I am short, squat and never seem to fit into anything right. Lately I have found that airy tops mixed with tighter leggings seem to work if the bum is covered, plus avoiding all spots and stripes and white shades - go for large, floral prints if you need prints. I find that if I try for the "sloppy joe" style of buying 3 x too large on the top, it actually makes me look a bit slimmer. Voted interesting.
