Best Shapewear: The Winners

Figuring out what the best shapewear is proves difficult for the average woman, doesn't it? With so many varieties, celebrities plugging one kind or another, it's a colossal task to discover which shapewear really does the job.

If you haven’t yet read Girdles for Women: Tips on Choosing the Best Shapewear for Women, I highly recommend you do so. I provide some basic tips and recommendations to assist you in finding the best shapewear. I’m going to now take this one step further and make specific recommendations for the top body shapers for women on the market today. As I mentioned in my other hub, I have purchased a LOT of body shapers undergarments, some awful and some fantastic. I’ve wasted some hard earned cash in the process, too. So, to spare you the agony, I will highlight the winners in the Mid Thigh Shapers category for the best shapewear.

Best Shapewear: Spanx Reviews: “Scuba Suit”, “Biker Shorts” or Mid Thigh Shapers

This was the first kind of shapewear I tried and although I wasn’t pleased with my original purchase, after some research and experimentation I finally found the perfect mid thigh shapers. Here are my top 3 choices for the best shapewear:

Top Pick For Best Shapewear

SPANX In-Power Line Super Higher Power Shapewear

This shapewear actually does what it says and doesn’t do what we all loathe, rolls down at the waist and up at the legs. The legs have stay where they need to be on the thighs, instead of rolling up into little Daisy Duke shorts. I generally look for shapewear that has some lycra in it for the sake of comfort. They are still comfortable, not THE most comfortable of the bunch, but totally worth it for the slimming effect they provide. They definitely fit the definition of compression garments, they will hug you, but not strangle you like some other compression garments. They are great for ironing out abdominal fat, love handles, the buttocks, and the hip area. Pay very close attention to the sizing of these, if you’re on the fence about which size you need, ALWAYS choose the larger one. If you choose a size too small, you will find the top rolling down. They are sized the same as hosiery, from size A to G, so pay careful attention to your height and weight.

They do have a cotton gusset for ease of use when nature calls. I must say the hole is, well, sadly small. It’s usable, but you might find yourself needing to manually widen it a bit when you go. Some women don’t bother wearing underwear with these slimmers, but some don’t feel comfortable leaving home without it. It’s your call, but may I recommend wearing the underwear on top of the shaper? It will make your life a lot simpler.

If you are short or have a very short torso, I might think twice about purchasing these. I could see these Spanx slimmers invading your chest area if you’re not careful! Definitely consider your height when choosing the best shapewear.

Best Shapewear: Spanx Reviews, Second Pick: Spanx Skinny Britches Mid-Thigh Shaper Shapewear for Women

Spanx Skinny Britches will work better for you than the Higher Power shapers if you’re on the shorter side. It’s a lighter control, too, so a medium level compression garment. The fabric is thin and very light-weight, so it’s not only comfortable, but won’t make you feel hot and sweaty all day long. You can layer Skinny Britches depending upon the amount of compression you desire. I wear them on their own if I only want a bit of compression, but layer them with Skinny Britches Hipsters for extra compression in the abdomen, buttocks and hips. You can even double up and wear two of the mid thigh britches at a time, they really are that thin and light. These come in many different colors and sizes, from small to 3X plus.

Now, compared to many body shapers for women, these are superior in terms of staying put. I will say, however they are more apt to roll than the Higher Power Spanx.  Still a top pick in the category for best shapewear

Best Shapewear: Third Pick: Most Affordable, Comfortable and Best Performance for the Price Assets by Sara Blakely Women’s Sensational Shaper

The Assets line, like Spanx, is made by Sara Blakely. Not only does this get at A+ for comfort, but also an A+ for affordability. It’s missing the convenient double cotton gusset and doesn’t provide as much compression as some of the more popular Spanx shapers do, but it’s definitely a must have purchase for anyone on a budget or searching for the ultimate in comfort. Honestly, I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of this shaper. I really didn’t think I was going to get very much for my $20, but these have become a staple in my wardrobe. They stay in place, you can barely tell they’re there and they do an excellent job minimizing bulges. They have THE most comfortable waistband of all, it never digs into my skin and leaves that awful red, irritated band on my skin. They are made of nylon and I’ve been pleased by how well they’ve kept their shape with frequent use. The Assets line is the best shapewear for the price.

Thank you so much, this was really helpful. Yeah, I don't care much about comfort, so long as I look good. =P I ordered the spanx, they had shaping leggings too but they don't come in 3X, so i'll definitely look into lytess, and i'm going to look for an upper body shaper as well, the ones i have for everyday wear just won't quite cut it. thanks so much for your help, and i'll let you know what i end up doing and how everything goes!

lyss, sorry for the late reply. I hear your problem and I do think there's a solution. You will need to wear a couple of body shapers to get the job done. I still recommend the Spanx in-power line, but you're right it's not going to extend down past the knees. Lytess makes some great slimming leggings that could do the trick. You could wear both an upper body slimmer and the slimming leggings (and breathe later :P) You will be hot and constricted, but it seems you know that. I would put the leggings on over the torso slimmer for use of accessibility when you need to use "the facilities". It can be a royal pain, especially when you have on a dress, to boot.

Let me know what you decide and how it all turns out. Have a great time at the wedding.

hey wordscribe. i apologize in advance for the length of this comment. i really need an AMAZING body shaper, as i am veryyy overweight. two weeks from now i have a wedding to go to, and i bought an amazing dress, i never wore a dress in my life. the problem is, i'm lumpy and at my weight it's impossible to find a dress that doesn't show lumps. i went crazy looking for body shapers today, and almost none got rid of the lumps, just smoothed me out a drop, and i need one that sucks everything in and slims my thighs as well as stomach, (i don't care about comfort or breathing i just need amazing control =P, i'll breath later) but there aren't ANY that come down to/below the knees, and my thighs, knees and up, are where almost all of my weight is. all of the bodysuits and thigh slimmers only come mid-thigh, or worse. the problem with that is, it doesn't matter if it fits right, it will still cut into my thighs, and even a little bit of cut is obvious on me. or maybe it's just obvious TO me. still, i want to feel comfortable. so after reading many reviews, yours included, that rave about the spanx in-power line, i really wanted to try it. no one seems to ever complain about the thighs, but then again, in all of my research i could never find anyone who even MENTIONS this issue at all. so... to conclude my essay to you; did the in-power line cut into your thighs at all? even a little? or does the stocking part somehow take care of that problem? i couldn't imagine sheer stockings helping much, but i'll see what you have to say! i want a smooth line, no fat buldges. sorry for the ridiculously long comment, i'm not good at summing things up. =P

LilyRose, "take the plunge" lol. Go for it, I'm telling you Skinny Britches are great. Thank goodness I have them for the upcoming holiday fest... I'm sure I'll be doubling up on the britches by the end of the year. Sigh. Good to see you, Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Okay, so weird - I was just looking at the Skinny Britches yesterday! I am short, so they look ideal for me, just not sure I'm ready to take the plunge...
