Very Dry Skin - Winter Difficulties
Particularly during the winter many people get dry skin and need a moisturizer for dry skin. Skin irritation, scaly skin, itchiness and chapped hands are all a problem for many people. The skin can get so dry it results in flaking, cracking, even eczema, in which the skin becomes inflamed. Once the heat gets turned on indoors and particularly if you don't have a humidifier, your skin starts to dry out. So, what can you do about it?
Overview of Skin
Your skin is a flexible membranous tissuewhich operates as a complex organ to perform vital protective and metabolic functions of the body. The skin makes up about 18% of adults weight.
The skin contains two main layers of cells:
- A thin outer layer called the epidermis
- A thicker inner layer immediate below called the dermis.
Along the internal surface of the epidermis, young cells continuously multiply pushing the older self outward.
At the outer surface fielder cells flatten and overlap to form a tough exterior and gradually sheds calluses or collections of dead skin. Hair and nails are evolutionary adaptations of the epidermis. As the skin is the largest organ in the body we do want to take care goof care of it.
The skin serves as a waterproof covering for our bodies and provides a barrier against invasion of outside organisms such as bacteria or fungus. It also helps the human body maintain its normal temperature. Human skin has remarkable self-healing properties
Remedies for Dry skin
First, you exacerbate dryness by turning up the heat in your home or your car, using electric blankets and space heaters, soaking in a hot tub or taking long hot showers.
Dr. Jeanette Graf, a board certified dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York state. The cold air also makes your veins constrict, which is another factor to adding dryness.
According to Dr. Graff the first step is keeping the skin moisturized, which helps our skin regulate our body temperature and protects us from pathogens and infections.
Finding a good dermatologist or esthetician is probably your best bet, as your typical drugstore employee is unlikely to be able to give you the best advice. A specialist can determine your skin type and troubleshoot your current skin care regimen, giving you advice on the skin products you should be using. The good news is that inexpensive products will work just as well as high-end ones. There our many organic homemade products which also work well.

Sometimes the FDA is unfairly influenced by the nation's biggest drug companies instead of actually protecting us against unsafe drugs.
Billions of dollars are spent by these big drug companies to lure us to use their products. This is another good reason to see a dermatologist or specialist to for your particular skincare problems.
Sometimes the moisturizer that works well in spring and summer does not work well in the winter. Winter will often requires an ointment moisturizer rather than water-based, as they will create a protective layer on the skin and retains more moisture than cream or lotion. It's important to look for non-clogging oils, like avocado oil, mineral oil, Primrose oil or almond oil.
The best oils for winter contain three main types of ingredients, so look for oils that contain:
- Hyaluronic acid
Another set of ingredients might contain C and jelly, silicone, lanolin, and mineral oil helps seal that moisture within the skin.

Here are a few home remedies that can help combat your dry skin:
- Use a humidifier in your bedroom during the winter.
- Avoid brushes, sponges, scrub brushes and washcloths. Minimize your use of soaps choosing preparations such as Dove, and Basis, or consider cleansers like Cetaphill, or Aquanil. Steer clear of deodorant, perfume and or alcohol products which strip away natural oils.
- Look for moisture–rich ingredients like lactic acid, urea, glycerol, petrolatum at home and hyaluronic acid to combat winter skin to combat dry winter skin. Use of body wash which is less drying the bar so then apply your moisturizer immediately by your skin is still damp.
- Limit yourself to 15 to 10 min. bath or showers and don't use hot water. According to Dr. Graf people don't need to shower as often in the winter, and only three times a week using lukewarm water getting in and out quickly as the best way to keep your skin moisturized.
- Don't scratch. Most moisturizers can control an itch.
- Use fragrance–free laundry detergents and avoid fabric softener.
- Avoid wearing wool and other fabrics that can irritate the skin.
- Even though it is not summer you still need to use sunscreen, using a broad – spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, as the winter sun can damage your skin.
- Pamper your feet as they tend to get very thick and dry in the winter. One method is soaking them in Epsom salt, and then use a foot scrub. Rub in a thick moisturizer and put on socks before going to bed, and you will wake up with noticeably softer feet.
- To protect your hands and winter use powder – free latex gloves when cleaning or doing the dishes and keep bottles of moisturizer at convenient locations so you can use them throughout the day. If you work, keep one in your desk, keep one in your purse or glove compartment, and always keep one by your bathroom sink.
- Many people do use some home remedies and one that I've tried successfully is honey with a little bit of olive oil mixed in. I rub it on my face and leave it for about 10 min. then wash it off and my skin is very soft. I think I learned that trick from someone on Hubpages actually.
Changes in Lifestyle
Quit smoking and avoid stress situations that can show up on your face no matter how thoroughly you take care of your skin.
Women; never go to bed with your makeup on, it can seep into your pores, clogging them. Wash your skin twice at the end of the day – first to take off the makeup and then to wash the skin itself.
You can also nourish your skin by making facial mask from plain yogurt, banana, avocado and taking vitamin C that helps in formation of collagen, improving skin's texture.
Keep your skin well hydrated throughout the day and a good home remedy is to use a few drops of chamomile (rose) essential oil to the distilled water, pour it into the spray bottle – and spray it on your skin as frequently as possible, shaking gently before each use.
Keep your skin supple and looking good by stimulating blood circulation and it. A glass of hot water with lemon daily helps to energize your entire organism, including liver and gallbladder, cleaning the blood toxins responsible for problem skin.
Cream dry feet at night and wearing socks can also help dryness or blisters.
There are many easy affordable ways to maintain healthy looking skin with minimal effort on your part. There is a lot of information in this hub to help you keep well moisturized, healthy skin. The healthier your skin looks, the less wrinkles you will have, and the younger you will look. I think we all like the idea of looking younger.
