How to Find a Bra For That Backless Dress

Updated on December 30, 2013

Backless dresses are in right now... in fact, so are backless blouses. Trouble is, finding a bra that works can be extremely tricky. Some women (like myself) cannot get away with NOT wearing a bra. For years, I didn't even bother with backless dresses. I really couldn't find a bra that worked properly. However, in recent years there has been a surprising amount of bra innovation.

If you've read any of my other hubs on bras, you will know I'm a big supporter or both Wacoal and Lunaire. And yes, I am embarrassed to tell you I DID learn about Wacoal from Oprah Winfrey. Heck, I'm pretty sure the whole world did!

What Do YOU Want Most in a Backless Bra

The good news is there are a decent number of bras for backless dresses these days. Years ago, you pretty much had to wear one of those awful bra boustierres and you'd feel like you were preparing to walk down the aisle. Fortunately, this simply isn't the case anymore. You can even find adhesive bras these days.

My main mission when I'm looking for a bra like this is to keep my breasts where they're supposed to be! I don't want there to be any wardrobe malfunctions whatsoever.

I also want to look good in the dress... I don't like a lot of unnecessary bra embroidery or seams to show through the dress.

Finally, I want to be comfortable. I want to feel like I can dash over to the bar for a drink and the girls will stay put.

If you have larger breasts like I do, you may find you'll get the most support with a longline style of bra.

Least Expensive Option

You may or may not have heard of self-adhesive silicone bras... Basically they stick on your chest and are a little bit more "realistic" looking. Trouble is, you have to be pretty darn small to pull these off. If you are anything above a B cup, you might as well forget it. You know that confidence you feel that you can run a few steps in your bra if necessary- you will NEVER have that with these silicone jobbies.

Not only will you not feel like the girls are staying in place, you will have no air circulation whatsover. If you like sweating, you will love these backless bras. Just make sure to keep a Kleenex handy for sweat mopping under "there" handy.

Only Options!

If you want to be comfortable, feel confident and look great you do have a couple of bras for your backless dress. There really aren't a lot on the market with this design, unfortunately. But, the two I recommend will work for anyone. I have worn the Fashion Forms Women's Ultralite Nubra on multiple occasions and cannot imagine a better uniquely designed bra.

As I said, I have larger breasts and I can even pull this off. It comes in sizes A to DD. Heaven for women of all sizes, I say.

The only other one, made by the same company is the Fashion Forms Go Bare Backless Bra. Trust me, there is no one who's more aware of how risky this thing looks. It has two sticky areas on each side to keep the bra in its proper position. I thought there would be no way it would be on for even half the night. But even after a lot of movement and activities, it was still sticking strong.

The negative of the bra is the lack of comfort. The sticky sides will begin to bother you not too long into the night. I suggest you break in this puppy before you set off for a night. Just wear it for brief periods of time for a few days and you will be much more comfortable come the special night.

And wash it before you wear it! I promise- it won't be nearly as stiff and uncomfortable that way.
