Burlesque Costume - Corsets!
Burlesque - The Trend
In recent years Burlesque has been the new trend to hit fashion and entertainment around the western world. Previously this little known form of entertainment was rarely in the spotlight; being confined to music halls and specialist strip clubs. The dancer and actress Dita Von Teese was the first celebrity to put Burlesque on the map; being well known for her retro, burlesque inspired fashion and successful burlesque dancing career. Since the growth in popularity of Von Teese, Burlesque has popped up as a form of fun dance activity for women on hen weekends, in celebrity films ('Burlesque' with Christine Aguilera) and most evidently in everyday fashion. The costume in Burlesque dancing is minimal, focusing on showing off the feminine form in the most seductive way. Although the traditional Burlesque dancing costumes are a little extreme for most women, the style can be suggested in a variety of ways and is evident in a lot of high street fashion.
A fabulous corset is a Burlesque must have! A corset is one of the Burlesque fashion items that can be easily transferred into everyday fashion. The corset can be worn as sexy underwear, or as a fashion item for evenings out. Worn alone or with a blazer on top, it produces a fabulous posture and figure. The wearer's confidence and shape is transformed with a good corset and the popular Burlesque styles offer upgraded sexiness and unique styling.
If you are looking for a taste of the Burlesque, to release your inner confidence and ooze sex appeal, the Burlesque corst may be for you. Here is my guide to the best corsets on offer and how you can wear your corset with appropriate accessories and styling.
Burlesque style is very much influenced by its early twentieth century origins. The fashion of Dita Von Teese is 40's and 50's inspired, so when choosing clothing to portray a Burlesque style, look for classical shapes, but make the statement with colour or decoration. Lace is one of those decorations that is very popular in Burlesque and works well with corsets. If you are looking for a corset to wear as an outdoor garment, look for lace detailing rather than sheer areas. Lace also works well in a variety of colours and is good for disguising lumps and bumps.
Laces / Ties
When wearing traditional corsets it was always a two person job to fit it correctly. This problems has been solved by modern corsets now including zips and hook and eyes, but traditionally the close fit was created by laces being tightened and tied at the back of the garment. It is now often the case that laces are used for purely decorative reasons as they look fabulous! A great way to add detail and sex appeal.
if you are a little afraid of going with the Burlesque underwear as outerwear, go for a Burlesque style corset top. They offer more coverage, with the same amount of shaping and style. Corset tops can be a cheaper and more comfortable option for a night out.
Creating the look
As with most fashion styles it is often the accessories that make the most statement. In Burlesque it is no different, as the accessories worn by traditional Burlesque dancers have made a huge hit on the high street and create the essence of the look. There are a huge range of accessories available that can be worn with the simplest of clothing, yet still create huge impact. Shoes, hats, veils, jewellery, gloves are all great Burlesque options.
