Updated on February 9, 2012

Dooney and Bourke Handbags

Peter Dooney and Frederic Bourke started their brainchild business, Dooney & Bourke, in 1975, South Norwalk, Connecticut. In 1981 the duo added a signature line of handbags releasing the Tack Case and Equestrian Bag both made from bridle leather. Dooney and Bourke handbags come in a variety of colors, styles, fabrics and leathers, selling anywhere from under $100k to $1 million dollars.

Dooney Bourke Hayden Oversized Clutch

In 2007 Dooney & Bourke teamed with actress Hayden Panettiere, of Heroes fame, in designing an over sized clutch.

AWL Collection

AWL (All Weather Leather) was waterproof using cowhide material, this Dooney & Bourke handbag requires little care and difficult stains can be removed with water and mild soap.  But be careful, do not use any creams for cleaning or conditioning.  The oils in these substances could soften and open pores of the hide defeating the shrinking process, that makes the leather waterproof.

Is it real or fake?

The following tips will help you spot a fake;

  1. The leather logo tag, should be visible on the front of the purse.
  2. If the stitching color is not the same as the thread used on the seams it a fake.
  3. All Dooney & Bourke handbags are trimmed in British tan this also applies to the handles. If the trim or handles are in any other color its not real.
  4. Inside the bag can be found another clue. There should be a leather duck logo with visible stitching. Along with this, sewn underneath the leather seam should be a red, white and blue registration number.

      I have two Dooney & Bourkes, one black, and one the traditional brown and cream handbag look. I always enjoy carrying them. I guess you recognized the type after reading my yard work hub. LOL.
