Buying Your Own Diamond Ring – No Engagement Necessary

Updated on September 16, 2010

Many women in modern times are waiting until their mid-twenties, early thirties, or even later to marry. This allows women to focus on getting established in their careers before turning their attention to running households and starting families. Some women, of course, elect not to marry at all because the right man doesn’t come along, the timing never seems right, or for a variety of other reasons. But does the decision to delay or forego marriage mean that a woman gives up the right to wear a sparkling diamond ring on her finger? Of course not!

A new diamond in an heirloom setting is the perfect gift - to yourself.

Buying a diamond ring for yourself can be done to mark an occasion, such as a promotion or a special birthday, or for no particular reason at all.  So-called “right-hand” diamond rings allow you to wear even a solitaire while reveling in your single status, if you like.  If a solitaire diamond ring is too close to the traditional engagement ring style for you or is simply not your preference, a plethora of other options exist.

Since the right diamond can be placed into any setting you like, consider the setting first.  Perhaps an heirloom ring exists in your family that you’d like to use.  If so, you can purchase a loose diamond or diamonds, as appropriate, plus other gemstones if needed, and reuse the original setting for a unique vintage look.  If no heirloom piece exists or if you want something more modern, browse right-hand diamond ring settings online and you are sure to find something you love.  If you prefer something more understated, a band with diamonds placed at intervals might suit your taste.  If you want to make a stronger statement, consider a cocktail ring with a center diamond, perhaps embellished with a bezel or filigree finish.  For non-conformists, a layered prong or other abstract design is perfect, and there’s a huge variety from which you can choose.

Diamond rings....not just for brides anymore.

If you have your heart set on a traditional solitaire diamond but no suitor is in sight, don’t despair – get the diamond ring you love!  After all, there’s nothing wrong with one day owning two gorgeous solitaires.  Your engagement ring can be purchased in a different shape or set in a different metal to distinguish it from the ring you bought on your own.

Whatever setting you select for your diamond ring, carefully consider the metal you choose: yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, and platinum are all options.  Consider when you will wear your new ring most often and which jewelry you’ll choose to accompany it.  It doesn’t have to match, but if you don’t like the way the pieces look together, you’ll wear it less often.

Buying a diamond ring for yourself is an empowering thing to do as a woman.  Go ahead – treat yourself!
