Can braids help your hair grow longer?

Updated on February 15, 2012

Can Braids Help Your Hair Grow Longer?

All my life I have wanted long hair. As a little girl my mother liked to keep my hair short and sometimes perm it like Shirley Temple. Short hair is easy to take care of especially when you have children. The older I got the more I wanted long hair so my mother let me grow it long but my hair never grew very fast. Every so often my mother would trim my hair to keep it healthy. But that just made it short again.

My hair grew to about my shoulder blades and there it seemed to stop. I remember wanting my bangs “feathered” in my early teens and a neighbour was in hair dressing school so she cut my hair, I hated it! She did such a bad job I was afraid to go to another hairdresser again, or for a very long time. From then on I was terrified of hairdressers and only had my hair cut once more by a hairdresser. She was my Aunts hairdresser and she did a great job, but when my hair started to grow out again my fear kicked in and I did my own trimming of my bangs and my hair until it all grew to the same length and stayed there. For years I tried to get my hair to grow past my bra strap, but it just grew so slow and never any longer.

As a server in the restaurant industry we were always told to keep our long hair tied back. So at work my hair was always in a ponytail or a bun or sometimes I would braid it. But I would come home after work and let it loose and where it to bed that way. In the mornings I would get up and brush my hair, as a little girl I was told brushing your hair was good for it, and I always found so much of my hair in my brush. No wonder it wouldn’t grow any longer.

A few years ago I started to wear my hair in braids overnight and in the morning I had the coolest wave to my hair, note I went to bed with wet hair for the wave to turn out. I did not have to brush my hair in the mornings anymore so I lost less hair. When the weather turned hot I just kept my braids in 24/7, after every shower I braided my hair and kept it like that. Then one day after my shower I noted my hair was longer! I was amazed and I knew the only thing different was the braiding of my hair. No expensive products no special diets, my hair grew on its own.

Today I still wear braids all the time, but on a few special days I let it down. I wear it wavy or just straight either way it is my choice and now my hair is down to my lower back, it has never been this long in my life.

If you are looking to grow your hair longer, try braids. Growing your hair this way may take a few years, but if you want long hair and your hair won’t grow like mine wouldn’t it is so worth the time and patience. Finally long hair

Thank you neelam, you have a smart Mom, I wish I would have known this at an earlier age, I could have had longer hair growing up.

Hi Aisha. I cannot say how long it will take to grow your hair, I am sure everyone's hair grows differently, my hair grows very slowly. Just don't cut it, I know people tell you it is healthy to cut you hair, but I always waited until it grew a little longer first, then I would only "TRIM" it a little. Hope this helps and good luck!

I have been trying to grow my hair long ever since my mom gave me total control over my hair. Not too sure how long it took to grow my hair to my mid back, but once it got to that point it would grow no further. It did take me years, my hair grows really slow.
