Why Washing Your Face is so Important

Updated on January 22, 2014

Why Cleansing Your Face is so important

Taking care of your skin is important no matter what stage you areat in life. Your face is the first real impression people will have when they see your or meet you for the first time. There are a lot of pollutants in the air, as well as dirt that can get on your face during the course of a day, and it is important that you cleanse your skin of these things.

Many women wear some kind of make up, and it is the general consensus that it is good to wash your face well before you go to bed every night. When washing your face, you clean off the make up plus any extra dirt, pollutants and oils that may be on your skin. Not only that, you sometimes get a bit of exfoliating done in the process, especially if you use a washcloth or something similar.

Regardless of whether or not you wear make up, or are a man or a woman, it is a good idea to wash your face daily at least one time. The easiest time is in the morning, and/or before going to bed each night. Getting into the habit makes this a lot easier. Over time, your skin will be more healthy for keeping it cleansed. It is a critical part of the process of taking care of your skin and minimizing the degree of the wrinkles that come with age. If i you do wash your face at night, again in the morning is a smart thing to do.

Our skin faces the oxidants in the air every day. The process is slow, but imagine a piece of fruit you have cut into, like an apple. What turns the apple brown are the oxidants in the air. I have been told that wearing a good moisturizer along with some great makeup can help to protect your skin from some of these oxidants. Regardless of whether that is true or not, it is a good idea to take the best care of your skin, including keeping it clean, and moisturizing it with a sun protection factor in it.

What is next? What are Some Great Facial Cleansers?

So, doing a quick lathering up with your favorite cleanser daily is a good thing. The next question that naturally follows is what cleansers are good for us to use? You don't need anything fancy, but some people spend quite a bit of money on facial cleansers. You don't need to do this however. In short, the most important things to keep in mind are to

1. Gently wash your face, and rinse off. Let the cleanser do its work.

2. Pat your face dry with a towel, gently. Avoid hard rubbing of your face. Its really that simple!

Below I will share what some of my favorite cleansers are, and some that I have tried that were just sufficient to get the basic job done. If you have any comments, please share them below.

Clinique Facial Soap

This soap comes in a pump form and it is the one I use when I am using Clinique products.  Its pretty much a no nonsense cleanser, that really gets the job done.  It smells clean enough, but doesn't smell like anything special that I love to put on my face like some others do.  It is part of a 3 step process of cleansing, toning and moisturizing.  I like this simple and very effective formula that Clinique has.  I would definitely recommend this product.  For the higher end stores that sell cleansers, this is more in the range that I want to spend on a cleanser.  Others can seem very overpriced to me.  They have formulas in this cleanser for different skin types.  They also have soap bars that are very nice, big and long lasting.  You don't want these cleansers to get into your eyes, especially the soaps.  I am not sure why they burn so badly, but they do burn my eyes very much.  Its not recommended to use around your eyes anyway, and I use an eye makeup remover for that area.

St. Ives Apricot Radiance Cleanser

There is a blemish fighting version of this cleanser as well which is great for people that struggle with the occasional break out on their skin.  I like this product because it has a nice but not too strong pleasant fragrance and feels creamy on the skin, and has little microbeads in it.   It claims to deep clean your skin without drying it out.  It is mild enough for sensitive skin, and has the added benefits of vitamins and of course apricot extract.  I love it when a product has things found in nature incorporated into it like that.  I like using a wet warm washcloth with this cleanser.  It is nice and affordable and easy to find in Targets and Wal Marts and drug stores.  I would recommend it.

Lancome - Creme Douceur & Creme Radiance

This is a newer product to me that frankly, I didn't quite understand the first time I heard about it. Quickly I have grown to love it however as a "splurge product" (one I like but don't really need). I am going to refer to this as a cleanser or a step before your regular chosen cleanser and I will explain way. It is a cream to oil cleanser that is meant to be massaged onto your skin which is a very nice idea. It is for all skin types which is nice. It is meant to loosen up makeup, dirt and oils, be massaged on, then rinsed off with water. You can apply this dry at first, massage into your face in gentle circular motions which feels wonderful, then slowly add a bit of water to that to create the cleansing effect. It says you can discover a new sensory experience in your daily skin care regimen. I would say that is something I found to be true of it.

What I love most about this product is the light fragrance of White Lotus which also acts as an antioxidant. If you think about it, anything that has antioxidant properties is going to be great for our skin because it is the very oxidation process that ages our skin! We want to try to encourage things to go the other way, not to become more oxidized. While this lovely product doesn't lather up much and cleanse like some of my other cleansers, I follow it right up with another cleanser such as Creme Radiance. I would definitely try the Creme Douceur like I did. I got a nice little 2 fl. oz. tube of this in a purchase with purchase and I am glad I did because initially I may not have purchased it on its own. It is lasting me a while as well.

Creme Radiance by Lancome This is a very lovely cleanser and it may be one of my all time favorites. It is often a little bit more than I want to spend, but skin care is an exception. It is my face, and I only get one, so I don't mind spending a little more money if I am really sure it is going to help me. This smells just wonderful. It makes the experience of washing my face, something I like to do because it smells so nice. It is not a strong smell at all, just wonderful. It is called a cream to foam cleanser and it definitely does more for my face than the Creme Douceur so I use them both when I can. Its a little splurge, and worth buying at least once if you never have before. They have different formulas for your exact skin needs as well. My mother likes the one for dry skin for instance. It is just a nice treat, and I feel like I am getting pampered at the spa or something like that.

Burt's Bees Orange Essence Facial Cleanser

This one is an award winning facial cleanser, and really happily surprised me in one sense.  The smell alone, is just out of this world!  It smells like I am peeling a very fresh orange, the exact wonderful clean orange smell you get from peeling an orange or from drinking fresh squeezed orange juice.  I kid you not, this is a very nice experience to have just while cleansing your face.  I highly recommend it for that reason.  The only down side to it, is that it reminds me some of the creme douceur that I mention above from Lancome in that it doesn't suds up, and is creamy and almost oily.  I mean this in a good way however.  That said, if you struggle with very oily skin you may not want this cleanser for your skin although Burt's Bees has other wonderfully fragrance facial cleansers.  I use this sometimes, then do another regular cleanser after it just to make sure I got off any make up and so my skin feels very clean before I go to bed.  It claims to cleanse but also moisturize and condition the skin.  After having used it, I believe this to be true.  During the winter months when my skin is dryer, and the heat is running a lot, I can see using this more on my skin.  It says for best results to use with an exfoliant, toner then moisturizer.  I am sure that this is true or close to being the same for the other cleansers as well.

This cleanser is a must try at least once it is just that wonderful.  You can find it in drugstores and many other places as well.
