Clothing for tall women

Updated on February 4, 2012

I’m five ten, for a woman that’s tall. There is nothing worse than wearing a pair of pants that don’t touch your ankles. I can’t stand pants that don’t go over your shoes. I used to get so worked up trying to buy clothes for myself. My friends would walk out with bags of clothes and I would have nothing. I was tall very early in life and because I was in a very strict religious church at the time, we were never allowed to wear pants. But when I finally got my independence and wanted to wear pants, I found that the pants were always too short. I had to do some research and experimentation.

As a tall woman you must get your leg measurements right. I’m a 36” leg, the average leg is 34”. Not many stores cater for this length and it can be very frustrating. Firstly because you hardly find any sale items in yours size and secondly because if you do find things in your size they come at a high price. Because tall women are rare, mass market production doesn’t really cater for us. When they do you’ll find that the clothing cost tends to be quite high. There are a few places I’ve found some great clothing that cater for the tall women.

Long Tall Sally

One afternoon a few years ago I was walking around Leeds town centre and I came across a shop called Long Tall Sally. I walked into this shop, picked up one pair of pants and thought I’d walked into tall heaven. No one will understand the joy I felt finding a pair of pants. Not just one pair of pants but rows of pants in my size and on sale! I remember walking out of that shop with three pairs of pants and a tracksuit that fitted. It wasn’t just the pants; it was the tops and shirts as well. Unless you want to wear short sleeved shirts for the rest of your life, you have to find a place that will cater for long arms as well. So long tall Sally is the number one place I’d recommend. Unfortunately they closed down their Leeds branch but I know they have a branch in York and in London. Their clothes are also available online so you can order online as well.

Top shop

I buy some of my clothes from Topshop. Topshop does a small section for tall. I found that most of the pants were black and there wasn’t much variety. I did get a lovely winter pants from Topshop and a lovely winter jacket. Their sizes are long enough for both long arms and long legs. I just feel that there isn’t much variety, but then again this is just my opinion.

Newlook also does a tall section. Newlook has a lot more variety and their clothes are reasonable priced. I bought two pants from them and two Jackets and they fitted perfectly. I haven’t been able to walk into a New look store to find a tall section like they do in Topshop. Instead you can order tall online and if it doesn’t fit it can be returned to the store. It would’ve been nice to have been able to walk into the store and fit the clothes rather than return them. But I guess this is just one of the things you have to do when you’re a tall woman, you have to put in the extra effort.

Dorothy Perkins

Like Topshop, Dorothy Perkins does a tall section. They do have lovely clothes for tall but I also found it a little bit limited. There were some things I’d seen and liked in the regular section that they didn’t cater for in tall. So it wouldn’t be the first place I’d go to but it does have a few good clothes.

Gap Jeans

Gap doesn’t really cater for tall women, not where I live at least but I find that some of their jeans do have great length. I’ve tried on a couple of jeans at Gap and I’ve been impressed with the length. When I wear jeans I want them to hang over my shoes or boots and some of the Gap jeans do this. If you want a good pair of jeans Gaps a good place to look.

Last but not least is Mango. I discovered Mango late last year. I knew the shop existed but I’d never been in to look. I just assumed it didn’t have my length. I was pleasantly surprised when my daughter and I decided to pop in. I found that Mango doesn’t do a tall section but quite a few of their pants are pretty long. I’ve since then bought three pairs of pants from Mango. I remember a friend saying she doesn’t buy her pants from Mango because she always finds they are too long. Unfortunately the tops are not the same. I haven’t been able to find a long sleeved shirt that fits me yet. But nevertheless I’m happy with the pants.

As a tall woman you have to shop around to find your exact fit. It maybe a little difficult but not impossible. At least with a Maxidress you can buy it anywhere. I love maxidresses. It’s the one dress that fits a tall woman perfectly without it dragging on the floor.

I hope that this has been helpful and will help make your life a little bit easier when it comes to finding clothes that fit you.

'High water pants,' that's a funny term. I can't be doing with that look. It's a bit of a pain being tall, but it can also a good thing. We can reach high shelves. Thanks for voting up AngelaBlair and for your comment.

You and I are about the same "tall" and I, too, have spent a lifetime finding clothes that fit -- I'm also long waisted. I finally resorted to buying men's jeans as they come in different lengths. There's nothing that looks worse on a tall gal than "high water" pants! Great Hub and voted up! Best, Sis
