Miltary Tattoos and their Meaning

Military tattoos are the type you either really like or not, as there seems to be not too much middle ground on the emotional topic of the military in general.

But as far as making a statement and the art surrounding military tattoos, there are some really nice ones, as you'll see in the military tattoo images below.

Many will speak of losses, being a warrior and the challenges and in some cases, consequences, of the need or decision to take military action.

Either way, the images included with a tattoo from the armed forces can be of the most compelling type, and whether you like them or not, they definitely leave an impression on you.

Military Tattoo telling a story

Usually when I do an article which includes images I will usually save the best for last, as it builds up anticipation to a powerful ending. In this case, I'm turning that around and offering what I consider the best as first.

What is amazing about this tattoo isn't just the quality, but that it tells an amazing story that captures the feel of what was happening. That's one of the more powerful elements and strengths of these tattoos.

Military Tattoo on Back

The tattoo below of a soldier walking while apparently surrounded by an angel is amazing. It reminds one of the fact that they are always one step away from eternity, and this is something someone in combat carries with them from moment to moment.

Soldier, Angel Tattoo

I really like this tattoo of soldiers standing on the other side of barbed wire. The addition of the red, white and blue of the barbed wire is a nod toward American soldiers, but the theme is applicable to anyone. Nicely done art as well.

What I would have liked better would for it to have been put in a place where you could see the entire scene at once, and not on the curvature of the arm.

Soldier, Barbed Wire Tattoo

This is one of those types of military tattoos full of emotion, as it honors a fallen comrade and/or family member, including the name on the dogtags. The flight of the helipcopters and the soldiers shooting is a powerful touch.

Tattoo dog tags, military tribute

While find this somewhat of a humorous tattoo, when you look at the message it can be a stark and chilling reminder of the cost of war and the mindset it takes to engage in it.

As for the tattoo itself, I like the placement and how you can easily view the entire image.

Tattoo of soldier holding skull

This is an incredible and unforgettable tattoo of a mushroom cloud, and while I usually don't like color in tattoos, this one seems to get away with it, while adding something to the overall feel.

I don't like the placement because you lose the effect of the overall image, but seeing it happen in the midst of a city is extraordinary.

I wonder what the person having this tattoo inked on them was thinking when it was done?

The tattoo below is another one of those that tell an amazing story and leave an indelible impression. It's fascinating to me to see something so simple say something so profound in its imagery.

There's not one thing I don't like about this tattoo; not only in the quality but the message and emotion it generates.

Finally, we'll end this article with this fantastic bullet armband tattoo. Some people like to use barbed wire tattoos in this way, but the bullets were a surprising and terrific touch.

Bullett Armband Tattoo

I've done a few of these tattoo articles throughout the last couple of years, but few of them have grabbed me like these military tattoos did, both in the ability to speak unusally powerfully in the message they convey, and the quality in which they were made.

The "Soldier, Angel" tattoo is in fact the logo of the non-profit organization "Soldiers' Angels". We send care packages and write letters to our troops. It is a fantastic organization. Our website is for more info.

The "Soldier, Angel" tattoo is actually the emblem of Soldiers Angels, a volunteer group that provides support and comfort to members of the military. Their motto is "May No Soldier Go Unloved

      May No Soldier Walk Alone

      May No Soldier Be Forgotten

      'Til they All Come Home."
